It happens.

Part 1 Bad News.

She sat on the bed starring at the doorway, her entire future, her life, may very well be decided on the other side of the door, in about 5 minutes. All the long nights spent studying and working a stinking job to help pay for school and it could all be over.

Her best friend sat next to her holding her hand gently, she would squeeze every so often just to remind her that they were both there.

That she didn’t have to face it alone.

:I’m 18 for god’s sake, this can’t be happening to me.: She thought and rubbed her free hand through her short black hair. She had never worn it this short but in a fit of angst had cut it down to three inches.

“It’s time.” Daria said standing up and pulling Jane to her feet.

“I can’t do it.” Jane said looking at the doorway in dread.

“Look, it’s not going to be as bad as you think. I’m not saying it’s going to be good just not as bad as you think.” Daria answered.

“You do it.” Jane said and sat back down.

“What!” Daria exclaimed.

“You do it, then you can tell me all about it.” Jane said slipping to the floor and wrapping her arms around her legs as she pulled her knees against her chest.

“Jane.” Daria sighed.

“Please. Don’t make me go in there right now.” Jane said looking more and more terrified.

“Fine.” Daria replied and walked to the door and opened it and stepped through.

:This can’t be happening. I don’t do bad things to anyone, I’ve never kicked a puppy or ran over a kitten and no one could blame me for the woodchuck, it ran right out in front of me. I don’t deserve this.: Jane thought angrily.

Daria walked back and sat down on the bed next to where Jane was sitting on the floor and opened her mouth.

“Stop. I don’t want to know.” Jane said.

“Jane be serious.” Daria sighed.

“Once, Daria. I’m 18 years old and I’ve had sex once, it’s not fair. We used protection.” Jane said as tears finally came.

“What are you going to do?” Daria said and Jane spun her head around, she looked at her friend’s face as it nodded “yes”

“Damn it, Damn it, Damn it.” Jane said rocking her body so her head hit the side of the bed.

“I don’t think you’ll be able to do much damage that way.” Daria said flatly.

“My life is over.” Jane said as she pulled herself onto the bed and lay on her stomach.

“I’m sorry.” Daria said and patted her on the back.

“You didn’t knock me up, that stupid guy on moving day did. I can’t even remember his name, Rick or Ralph or something.” Jane groaned.

“It happens, any ideas yet.” Daria said nervously.

“I’m barely floating in school as it is, Between classes and working, I get maybe 5 hours of sleep a day. How am I going to do this?” Jane said sound justly frustrated.

“Are you going to keep it?” Daria asked gently.

“I don’t have any other choice.” Jane groaned.

“Yes you do, you could give it up to a family or not have it.” Daria said carefully.

“Those are choices for other people, I DON’T have any other choice. I can get through this year and then have the kid. I’ll figure out what to do next.” Jane said turning toward Daria.

“I’ll be here. No matter what, we’ll get through this.” Daria said calmly.

“WE. I don’t think you’re going to get fat and have a screaming insane monster come out of your privates.” Jane snapped.

“No, I get to watch my best friend go insane from hormones, opps to late.” Daria said.

“I hate you.” Jane grouched.

Daria moved to stand up and Jane grabbed her hand in an iron grip.

“No, don’t go. Please I’m sorry it’s the baby talking.” Jane said panicked.

“I’m going to the bathroom.” Daria sighed and managed to extract her hand and close the bathroom door behind her.

Daria came out and sat down next to Jane who was sketching on the bed.

“I’ll make up a story to tell people about the dad. Something not so pathetic as the truth.” Jane sighed.

“OK.” Daria smirked.

“I understand if you want to bail on this one Amiga.” Jane said.

“Just for that, I’m going to tell Trent you got knocked up by the singer of a boyband.” Daria warned.

“DARIA!” Jane laughed. “Hey, that’s not bad, and he killed himself when he realized just how low he had sunk.”

“How about you keep in simple and not involve others in this massive lie.” Daria said running her hand through Jane’s cropped her.

“I don’t suppose you want to get married then we can claim I went to one of those clinics. Everyone already thinks we’re a gay couple.” Jane said jokingly.

“Not unless you want to start putting out.” Daria countered.

“I’m with child, you can’t expect any for at least 9 months.” Jane defended.

“It wouldn’t work out. You drool to much over guys and I don’t want to lose any chance I might have of losing my virginity before I turn twenty.” Daria laughed.

“Can we call it plan B?” Jane pushed.

“Plan C.” Daria agreed.

“Deal, now what do I do?” Jane asked.

“I have no idea. But I think going to a doctor and having them confirm your condition, might be a good idea.” Daria said.

“See, that’s what I need you for, I was thinking about going out and getting drunk.” Jane replied.

“No drinking, smoking or anything else. If you’re going to do this, then I’m going to make you do it right.” Daria said.

“Trent’s going to kill me.” Jane groaned.

“Doubtful. That would require effort.” Daria smirked.

“Isn’t the quiet shy girl, the one that suppose to get knocked up when she goes of to college.” Jane complained.

“Hush.” Daria swung a pillow and smacked Jane in the face.

“I doubt I’ll even see my parents before the baby is born.” Jane said sadly.

“I’ll loan you mine.” Daria offered.

“Promise me one thing.” Jane pressed.

“What?” Daria said suspiciously.

“That if I start turning into a wandering Lane or anything else, anything that isn’t a good mother, you’ll stop me.” Jane said.

“Jane.” Daria whispered and squeezed her shoulder.

“I mean it, you have to make sure the baby comes first, no matter what. Promise me.” Jane said forcefully.

“I promise, but don’t whine when you have to walk around with bruises from my boots all over your ass.” Daria relented.

“Good.” Jane said with a frown.

“What now?” Daria sighed.

“I’m hungry.” Jane answered.

Part 2 I’m not Fat

Jane leaned against the back of the elevator as it started it’s descent. Her feet were killing here and her back was worse.

:7 months pregnant and now they want to honor my work.: Jane groused.

It had been a rough time period since she found out but it was made easier by a really good friend who had gone above and beyond.

:Thank god Jake and Helen agreed to put me on their insurance, I never realized how much having a kid cost. I don’t even want to know what that cost Daria to talk them into it.: Jane thought shaking her head.

She stepped out of the elevator and waddled through the lobby to the exit and excepted the arm of the doorman who started waving and Jane saw Daria pull out to pick her up.

She managed to get into the beat up accord and sighed as her feet thanked her for it.

“I couldn’t find a spot anywhere.” Daria said nicely.

“I saw, the traffic is terrible. I can’t believe they wanted a meeting at lunch time.” Jane groaned as her stomach growled.

“I grabbed some chicken fingers and some sushi and a tuna salad sandwich for you while I was circling the block.” Daria said as she reached into the back and grabbed several bags of takeout and handed them to Jane.

“That’s my girl.” Jane said and tore into the bags and started scarfing down the food.

“So how did it go?” Daria said trying not to look at Jane while she was eating, the sight wasn’t for the timid.

“Prddy adll.” Jane started then paused to swallow. “Pretty well, basically they want to use my stuff in a book on modern artists. The swag will cover my next year, … if I was going to school next year. On top of the money for school, there should be enough to help get me setup once the baby is born.” Jane said looking somewhat disappointed.

“You’ll be able to start back. At most you’ll lose a year then you can go back and wow even more people.” Daria said cautiously.

“I just wish I could keep painting.” Jane sighed.

“You can, you just can’t use all those toxic paints. I know water color is not very impressive but it will keep you in practice.” Daria said forcefully.

“I know, damn you can be a bossy little …” Jane started only to be stopped by a California roll being shoved in her mouth.

“Is Trent going to be joining us for dinner tomorrow?” Daria attacked.

Jane blushed and started digging through the bags for more food.

“Jane.” Daria said tensely.

“I don’t think he likes your parents so he begged off. I’ll go by and see him while we’re down there.” Jane tried between mouthfuls.

“Trent loves my parents, he eats there every Sunday. Quinn says they even managed to get him to wear slacks to dinner a couple of times.” Daria sighed.

“Oh. I forgot.” Jane replied weakly.

“You haven’t told him yet have you? Damn it Jane.” Daria said pounding the wheel with her palm.

“I just can’t stand to hear the disappointment in his voice when I tell him.” Jane said starting to cry.

“Don’t you think the topic has come up around the dinner table. Don’t you remember me telling you about my Dad taking Trent out shopping for a bassinet.” Daria said as nice as she could muster, the traffic working her nerves.

“No.” Jane said tearfully.

“I would think he knows and he’s waiting for you to tell him. Jane, Trent loves you and I really doubt he is going to be anything but supportive.” Daria reproached.

“I can’t get it right. I still can’t get my mind around the fact that I’m not going to wake up in a few months and this will all be over.” Jane said.

“What do you mean?” Daria chuckled.

“I’m not fat, when this weight is gone I’m going to have a living breathing person whose is going to need 24-7 love, attention and care.” Jane struggled.

“You can handle it, I’ll be there and my folks and I’ll bet one of those … things you like that Trent will be too.” Daria said with a shudder.

“I doubt we can get one in Lawndale.” Jane said looking slightly annoyed.

“We can, I had Quinn check, Pizza King wouldn’t talk to her but Pizza Prince has a whole line of pregnant people food.” Daria smiled.

“You did that for me.” Jane said before bursting into tears and leaned over and rested her head on Daria’s shoulder.

“Tear blanket.” Daria said and grabbed the towel she now kept between the seats for when Jane started blubbering on her.

Jane raised her head and let Daria slide under the clean towel, once it was done she re-rested her head and started on the tuna sandwich.

Daria rolled down her window as she got on the interstate to pull away the awful smell of sushi and tuna fish and fried chicken.

“Next trip you’re riding in the back.” Daria said as she struggled to remain hold on her lunch.

“Baby, want a bite of my sandwich.” Jane offered and Daria poked her head out the window.

“No, thank you but I’m full.” Daria said as she slowed down to avoid crashing.

They arrived at the Morgendorffer home just after dark and Jane struggled to get out of the car as Daria moved around to help her up.

“I hate this, I have to go pee, I can’t stand up without help. I really have to go pee and people look at me like I eat a baby seal in front of them and did I mention I really have to go pee.” Jane complained loudly as she started her waddle to the front door.

Jake Morgendorffer meet her with an open door and after a quick hug headed out to the car to grab their bags.

“Can’t talk, bathroom.” Jane said as she blew by Helen and Quinn on her way to the downstairs bathroom.

Helen smirked as she went by, a knowing gleam in her eye. “We’ll be out here when you’re done, yell if you need any help.”

“Mooom.” Quinn said looking shocked at the suggestion.

“She might need help to get back out. She’s getting pretty big and her legs are like tooth picks.” Helen explained to her youngest daughter.

“Fine, mother.” Quinn groaned.

Daria and Jake came in the bags and piled them in the living room, in front of the large bay windows.

“Did you have  a nice drive?” Helen asked.

“Try ridding in a car with a wolverine with a tape worm.” Daria said with a smile.

“I remember when Helen was pregnant with you, every time we got in the car I would have to stop for French fries at every takeout place we passed. I couldn’t stand the smell of French fries for years.” Jake said understandingly.

“Great something to look forward to.” Daria laughed.

“Has she started sending you out in the middle of the night yet?” Jake asked.

“At least three times a week, luckily Boston has a lot of takeout places that deliver at all hours.” Daria replied.

“With Quinn, Helen had to go to the bathroom and in the last month or so she couldn’t even get off the can.” Jake said apparently enjoying the conversation.

“I’m expecting that in a few weeks. Her legs are getting so tired. She can barely get out of bed with help. I wish I was stronger, she tends to pull me down on top of her.” Daria chucked, looking a bit depressed.

“It’s just a few more months, then the baby will be here. I think you’ll be able to handle picking it up.” Jake assured her.

Helen watched the exchange and felt a slight pull on her heart.

:They sound like two fathers talking, the soon to be Dad getting advice from the seasoned veteran. It might be time to sit these two girls down for another talk.: Helen thought.

Jane came out of the bathroom and waddled over and received her hug from Quinn and Helen and the three headed into the kitchen.

Helen made coffee while Quinn talked about her school day while interjecting comments and hints for baby names as well as style suggestions for the baby clothes.

“Quinn, I don’t think a baby needs hair scrunchies and I’m not video taping the birth so I don’t need any makeup down there.” Jane groaned.

“But think about it. You will be meeting doctors and nurses and they’ll be looking at you, down there.” Quinn ended in a whisper.

“Hopefully I’ll be to drugged up to even notice they’re there.” Jane said with a shrug.

“How are you hens doing in here?” Jake said as he and Daria entered the kitchen.

“Ready to lay an egg, cluck cluck.” Jane joked, he always made her smile.

“So what are you’re plans while you two are in town.” Helen said.

“Sleep.” Jane said happily.

“Jane.” Daria said sternly.

“And talk to Trent.” Jane sighed.

“He’s going to be here for brunch tomorrow. You two can talk then.” Helen smiled.

“Ok.” Jane said flatly.

“Oh, your mom is in town.” Quinn said.

“What?” Jane said perking up.

“I told her you would be here and she said that if she had the time she would stop by.” Quinn said trying to smile.

“Great, I wouldn’t want her to put herself out.” Jane muttered.

Daria moved behind her and started rubbing her back in a long stroking motion that reached from the small of the back to her shoulders.

Jane leaned into the rubs and smiled as Daria rested her chin on Jane’s crown gently and bit back several comments that were coming to mind.

Helen watched Jake nod approvingly at the scene and made a note to find out if he knew something she didn’t, if he wanted to sleep some where besides the floor.

“Why do I keep hoping they will start acting like they give a damn.” Jane said sadly.

“Hope.” Daria said gently as her hands kept working.

Part 3 Birth.

Jane relaxed on the bed letting the gentle soothing of what ever they were giving her wash over her entire body.

Trent was sitting next to her but she wasn’t paying to much attention to his ramblings. Once they had their talk, she had found out how wrong she had been about Trent’s reaction. He spent his timing getting ready to be an uncle and working a job at the music store at the mall to save up some money.

Daria was crashed out on a chair nearby and Jane had to smirk as she remembered a conversation with Helen almost two months ago.

“Is there something you two might want to share?” Helen had asked nicely.

“What?” Daria said confused as she helped Jane into the bed in her old room and prepared to climb in after her.

“You sleep together.” Helen pointed out.

“I don’t want to take a chance I won’t hear her if she needs some help in the middle of the night.” Daria shrugged.

“Daria, please don’t insult my intelligence.” Helen said coldly.

Jane was staying out of the discussion and tried get comfortable.

“Mom, please just ask what ever you want to ask and get this over with.” Daria said tiredly.

“Fine, are you two lovers?” Helen asked.

“No, we have never done anything.” Daria answered only to catch a slight cough from Jane.

“That doesn’t count, for god’s sake we were both drunk and it was one kiss.” Daria hissed at her.

“So what exactly is going on with you two then, because you certainly seem like an old married couple.” Helen smiled.

“I honestly don’t know, Mom that’s the truth.” Daria said meeting her eyes for the first time since they started talking.

“I expect any updates that might occur but I thank you for your honesty and for the record we would not have a problem if you are a couple, we just want to know.” Helen said, turning and exiting the room.

:Daria had been so tense after that night, I thought she might start throwing down ground rules but she didn’t. God I love her. Problem is do I love her like a sister or as a girlfriend. Damn hormones are scrambling my brain.: Jane sighed as she continued to enjoy the drugs.

Quinn sat in the chair next to Daria and knitted quietly as she watched Jane humming peacefully to herself as Daria snored. Trent hadn’t stopped talking since they arrived.

Jake and Helen had gone to get dinner since the doctor had swore it would be hours.

:Maybe I’ll have the chance to finish this blanket.: Quinn thought as she finished another row.

:Jane’s having a baby, Daria and Jane are having a baby. It doesn’t matter that they are or aren’t gay, they’re together.: Quinn mused with a small chuckle.

:Only Daria would have a marriage that happened on accident.: Quinn grinned at that thought.

Trent looked down at Jane’s smiling face and wiped away the sweat on her brow. He had been pleased when he heard from Quinn of all people that his little sister was having a kid but it wouldn’t do any good to be upset after the fact so he decided to throw himself into making her life easier.

He had gotten a job and started saving money, at the same time he fixed up the house in case she wanted to move back home for a while.

He didn’t see his mother come into the room behind him and stand at the foot of the bed.

“Trent, why is Jane in the hospital?” Amanda Lane asked.

Trent almost jumped through his skin. “When did you get here?” He demanded.

“Just now, why is she here?” His mother asked again.

“She’s having a baby.” Trent answered.

“This won’t do, go get us a wheelchair and I’ll start unhooking all these machine and we can take her back to the house and I call a mid wife I know.” Amanda said, she sounded like she was singing.

“What?” Trent said loudly.

“Go on now.” Amanda said and reached for the monitor hooked to Jane’s finger.

She picked up Jane’s hand and moved to grip the small clip until a hand reached around her arm and pulled it away from her daughter.

“Excuse me, I don’t think you should be messing with that.” Daria said holding the woman in an iron grip.

“I remember you, you’re Janey’s friend. Daria.” Amanda said nicely.

“Yes and you are her mother. I’m sure Jane is going to be overjoyed you could make it, but let’s not be touching the equipment.” Daria said through gritted teeth.

“This is not necessary; all these modern things just clutter up birth. Help me take her home so we can celebrate the birth of her child as nature intended.” Amanda said smiling.

Neither woman noticed that Jane had started to come to.

“Jane wanted to give birth here so that’s what’s going to happen.” Daria said without a doubt in her voice or eyes.

“I think I know better than you about what my daughter would want, I’ll be taking her home right now. After the birth we can all take part in the birthing ceremony and usher in this new child into the Lane family.” Amanda said.

“Are you nuts.” Jane said from behind them.

Daria turned and saw Jane sitting up, and she looked pissed.

“Jane I’m glad you’re awake. Let’s get you to the house, I’ll call the midwife on the way.” Amanda said still smiling.

“Oh No. I’m having the baby here and that’s final, there will be no discussion on that. You can take your feel good butterfly stories and smoke em.” Jane said coldly.

“Jane, don’t talk to me that way?” Amanda said looking shocked.\

“I’ll talk to you any way I want. You couldn’t be bothered to come visit me two months ago, hell a phone call would have been nice. Anytime say in the last 9 or 10 months would have been fine. You know what, if you want to stay, sit down and shut up with that hippie stuff or leave.” Jane said pointing at the door.

“What?” Amanda said.

“You can stay as long as I don’t have to hear any of you hippie nonsense. Otherwise go home or go to hell, I really don’t care which right now.” Jane said with narrow eyes.

Amanda said nothing, backed away from the bed, took Daria’s chair, and looked confused and distant.

“Done.” Quinn exclaimed and she held up the baby blanket, it was black and gray with a red center.

“It’s perfect, thank you Quinn.” Jane said and reached over and grabbed Daria’s hand and squeezed.

“I’m hoping to make some more stuff for the baby. I plan on being a very active aunt.” Quinn said as she folded the blanket and grabbed another ball of yarn.

“We’re going to need all the help we can get.” Jane said with a grin before screaming in pain.

“Oh my god.” Jane gasped as the contraction ended.

“I’ll get the doctor.” Trent said and ran through the door.

“Remember the breathing, just like in the classes.” Daria said letting Jane crush her hand.

“Easy for you to say.” Jane growled.

Another contraction had Jane screaming again and Daria on her knees in pain as Jane squeezed her hand tightly.

“I thought they were giving her drugs.” Quinn said coming up and taking Jane’s free hand.

“They are.” Daria answered through the throbbing in her entire arm.

“You have to promise me.” Jane said as she started her breathing.

“I did remember.” Daria said as she used her free hand to wipe at Jane’s forehead.

“Don’t let me get like her. Make sure I take care of my baby.” Jane cried as another contraction hit her.

“45 seconds apart. I promise.” Daria said glancing at the door way wondering why nurses weren’t running through the door after all the screaming.

“God I can’t do this alone.” Jane cried.

“You don’t have to. I’ll be here no matter what, forever.” Daria promised.

“Plan C.” Jane said as another contraction hit.

“Sure, whatever you want.” Daria said as she tried to will blood to flow to her finger tips.

“Good, I want a nice wedding with family and friends, in a park.” Jane gasped.

“Quinn can plan it.” Daria said nodding over to her sister who was kneeling on the floor biting her lip trying not to cry out from her hand being crushed as well.

“I’ll make nice.” Quinn said shaking her head coughing as she fought back another bout of pain as a contraction hit.

“If you two are messing with me, I’ll aaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh.” Jane threatened.

“No, a nice wedding, just as soon as you want.” Daria promised.

“I want her to be a Morgendorffer not a Lane.” Jane gasped each word out.

“Ok, that’s fine.” Daria said wiping at Jane’s brow.

Amanda Lane watched as the contractions played out for several minutes before standing up and moving to the bed.

“Mom I’m sorry I was so mean.” Jane said as her mother smiled down at her.

“It runs in the family, I broke two of your father’s ribs when I had Wind and his jaw when Penny was born. Here.” Amanda said and reached down and clamped a small metal clip onto Jane’s neck and patted her daughter’s head gently.

“Nothing will take the pain but this will help a little.” She said as another contraction hit.

“Must … be … working …I … can .. still … feel … my … fingers.” Quinn said through clenched teeth.

Daria felt herself flashing back.

“Daria.” Jane said as they slept in the padded room.

“What, do you need to go to the bathroom?” Daria asked as she forced herself alert.

“No, not for an hour or two.” Jane almost giggled.

“Are you hungry?” Daria asked trying to go through the list of reason Jane would be awake at 3 am.

“No, look shut up for a second.” Jane sighed.

“Go on.” Daria said letting her annoyance sound out.

“Remember when we first found out I was pregnant?” Jane asked.

“Of course.” Daria said sleepily.

“I want to do Plan C.” Jane almost whispered.

“Isn’t that the plan where we get married?” Daria yawned.

“Ya.” Jane responded.

“Umm, I don’t know about that Jane.” Daria coughed.

“Why not?” Jane demanded.

“Well for starters there’s the whole not gay issue and I haven’t even kissed you so getting married is a big leap.”Daria answered truthfully.

“We’re 18, I’ll be turning 19 somewhere around the time I pop. How many girls in these day and age haven’t ever done anything besides kiss.” Jane pressed.

“I expect we are in the minority.” Daria answered, curious where her friend was going.

“Ok so maybe we didn’t because we were looking at the wrong people. I think I’m in love with you.” Jane whispered.

“Jane that’s a big deal for talking at 3 am.” Daria deflected.

“C’mon, your mom even saw it. Tell me you don’t think of this baby as yours. Tell me you don’t picture the two of us taking OUR baby for a walk in the park or to her first day of school.” Jane countered.

Daria laid quietly for a few moments then turned her head to Jane.

“Ok, you make a good argument but what about the whole gay thing.” Daria replied.

“I think I have some of those feelings. I keep checking you out when you’re changing.” Jane whispered as she shifted closer.

“Ok, let’s say you’re right and I’m not saying you are, is right before the baby is born the right time to be finding out.” Daria said.

“I just want it back on the table.” Jane said snuggling up against Daria.

“Ok, after the baby comes then we can investigate these feelings we’re having.” Daria said with a blush.

“I knew it.” Jane said and kissed Daria quickly on the cheek.

“I guess that would make me the Daddy.” Daria smiled.

“Believe me, you’re already the daddy. Your dad even threw you one of the men’s parties during the baby shower.

Daria came back to the present when another contraction hit.

“Quinn, go find Trent and the doctors and my parents. Hurry.” Daria said, helping Quinn get her hand free.

“I’m on it.” Quinn said and dashed out of the room holding her hand cradled to her chest.

Daria heard the shout as soon Quinn hit the nurse’s station.

“THERE IS A WOMAN HAVING A BABY IN THERE SO GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GET HER A DOCTOR AND SOME DRUGS.”

She smiled at the sudden pounding of footsteps that moved toward the room.

Epilog.

Daria sat in the chair next to a sleeping Jane, looking down at the perfect little life that had joined them in the world.

She had wanted to hold the baby but the cast on her hand prevented it for the time being.

Her mother sat watching her with a knowing smile and Daria laughed inwardly.

“I take it Quinn told you.” Daria said.

“Your father is already writing checks. I understand you agreed under painful threat.” Helen grinned pointing at the cast.

“Nah. It was something we talked about. She was right, I feel like a Dad or Mom, whatever. It’s my baby.” Daria smiled down at the child.

“The hospital seems to be buying the fertility clinic story. I hope you know what you’re doing Daria. Your name is on the birth certificate thanks to Quinn’s flirting, that means there isn’t going to be any changing your mind. Your father and I will do whatever we can to help but this baby is yours and Jane’s responsibility.” Helen sighed.

“You aren’t mad about the name are you?” Daria asked looking at her daughter.

“I think naming her after Trent and Quinn was a touching gesture.” Helen answered.

“Well I’m just glad she didn’t want to name her moonbeam or something.” Daria sighed.

“Shannon Morgendorffer is a welcome addition to our family.” Helen smiled.

“Thank you.” Daria said and she stroked her daughter’s cheek.

“It isn’t going to be easy is it?” Daria smirked at her mother.

“No.” Helen laughed.

“Hey, I did all the hard work.” Jane said from behind them looking tired.

Daria took Jane’s hand and held gently, laying her head onto the bed against Jane.

“She’s perfect.” Jane smiled.

“What till she becomes a teenager.” Helen grinned.

“Hi Shannon, I’m your Mommy and this is your Daddy.” Jane said looking over at the baby looked back and smiled.

“It’s just gas.” Daria deadpanned then smiled.
