Pink Cynic

Daria stretched out on her bed writing as Jane flipped through the stations complaining about the onslaught of reruns.
“How many times are we going to have to watch the one about steak knives?” Jane grumbled.
“Just get something to read will you.” Daria said harshly waving her hand toward the nearest pile of books.
“Fine, I spend all day being forced to read drivel and you expect me to do it here too.” Jane ranted as she started to go through the pile until she found one of Daria’s notebooks covered in every kind of anti parent symbol and phrase known to mankind.
“This shows promise.” Jane mused as she leaned against the bed and went to open the notebook.

Daria looked over and saw what Jane had chosen and tried to snatch it away.
“No.” Daria said shocked as Jane crawled quickly out of reach.
“Oh I really want to read this now.” Jane smirked.
Daria entire face panicked and Jane suddenly felt uneasy about the notebook.
“Is there something about this you don’t want me to see?” Jane said carefully.

Jane watched Daria process through several thousand answers before finding one.
“I’m gay … and I’m in love with you and that details all the things I want to do to you.” Daria said quickly and unconvincingly.
Jane sighed and countered. “Your gay too, that’s great we can have sex as soon as I read this.”
“Ok, I lied, I’m not gay. Please don’t open that.” Daria almost begged.
“What’s the big deal?” Jane asked now amused.
“You won’t want to be my friend anymore if you open that.” Daria said looking honestly scared.
“There’s nothing that would make me not want to be your friend anymore.” Jane sighed and opened the notebook and stared at the pages.
Jane looked up from the pages and stared at Daria.
“I’m a fraud, I know but I can’t help it.” Daria said throwing herself flat on the bed.
“Umm.” Jane tried as she flipped through the pages.
“Careful you don’t want to move the protective covering.” Daria warned.
“Ok.” Jane said and handed the notebook carefully back to her friend who grabbed it and held it to her chest.
“I understand if you don’t want to be my friend anymore.” Daria said looking hurt.
“What? Look it’s a little strange but it doesn’t make me want to run away screaming or anything like that. Do your parents know?” Jane asked.
“No and neither does Quinn and you can never tell them.” Daria said on the verge of a panic attack.
”OK, ok, I won’t tell anyone.” Jane said moving next to her friend and patting her on the arm.
“Nobody ever found out before.” Daria whispered.
“It’s ok.” Jane reassured her.

“Did you like them?” Daria asked weakly.
Jane thought carefully before answering. “Their great, not my thing but I can see why you like them. How long have you been keeping them?”
“Since my first year at middle school.” Daria replied.
“I have some you might want.” Jane said hoping to cheer up the even more stoic then normal cynic.
“That would be nice but I’m still a heartless bitch.” Daria sighed.
“Cool.” Jane answered.
Jane stared at the floor for several moments.

“Butterfly stickers. I can deal with that.” She laughed.
