SURPRISES
Part 1
Jane Lane painted in her messy bedroom that contrasted greatly with the surreal
landscape on the canvas.
:After all nothing could be quite this bad.: She smirked to herself
looking around at her room.
Her door opened and her older brother stuck his head in and smiled at her.
“Hey Janey, we got new neighbors.” He informed her. “They’re moving in right
now.”
“Someone bought the place next door, I thought we might have dropped the
property value enough for the crack heads to afford it.” Jane replied
sarcastically.
“Nope. It’s a family and it looks like they got a couple of girls your age.”
Trent announced.
“Great.” Jane sighed.
“C’mon they can’t be that bad.” Trent shrugged.
“Ok what the hell, maybe we can wrangle a free meal out of being nice.” Jane
sighed again putting away her brush before rubbing the wettest of the paint off
onto a nearby rag.
“Cool.” Trent said and he swung open the door.
Jane groaned and followed him down the hallway toward the front door.
:He is right, they can’t be as bad as the bunch already at Lawndale high.: She
thought with a shudder.
“Mom called this morning. Looks like she’ll be back in a few weeks.” Trent
advised her.
“Great now remember to show me a picture of her before then so I can remember
what she looks like.” Jane said bitterly.
Trent wisely chose to not answer the comment.
They went out into the front yard and paused long enough to see the family
moving in. The father was a typical yuppie looking fellow and the mother had long
auburn hair with waves and glasses and seemed at home in blue jeans and a
sweater. Jane guessed she was the mother by the simple fact of a younger
version of her walking around carrying boxes.
:Apple didn’t fall to far from that tree.: Jane smirked without malice.
A third girl clearly the youngest despite the fact she was several inches
taller than her sister was a redhead and Jane felt a slight twinge at the way
the family talked and communicated warmly with each other. Even the taunts
seemed to be dipped in chocolate before being tossed out. By the time Trent
started moving forward Jane knew quite a bit about the family.
:The Dad is helpless outside an office and Mom stern but not in a bad way
and the younger girl is bright but not as bright as her sister.: Jane ran
through her head and blushed at the almost cutthroat manner that she was
considering using the information.
“I’ve been dealing with the freaks at school for too long.” Jane muttered to
herself as they approached the father trying to unload a large carton from the
back of a small minivan.
“Help him.” Jane whispered over to Trent who hurried forward and grabbed the
opposite side of the box and helped lower it to the ground.
“Thanks.” The man said as he wiped at his face. “Jake Morgendorffer.”
“Trent Lane.” Trent said before Jane walked into his view. “And this is my
sister Janey. We live next door.”
“Hi.” Jane smiled.
“Please to met you. Looks like a good neighborhood. Nice to know there are
other kids for mine to play with.” Jake smiled back.
“I think they call it hanging out at their age.” The woman said approaching.
“Jake you didn’t try to lift that box all by yourself did you?” The woman
frowned.
“My brother was helping him.” Jane said and caught the thankful nod from Jake
in the corner of her eye.
“Ok then but you need to not over exert yourself.” The woman said. “Sorry it’s
just that sometimes I have a third child. My name is Amy and this is my husband
Jake.” Amy said holding her hand out to Jane who took it at once.
“Jane Lane and this is my brother Trent.” Jane replied.
“You look like you might be Daria or Quinn’s age.” Amy smiled warmly and Jane
felt a stab of pure jealousy.
“Depends on how old they are.” Jane shrugged and almost winced at the sarcasm.
Amy just laughed and called toward the house. “Daria, Quinn come meet the
neighbors.”
Jane watched the two girls put down the boxes and start toward them. The oldest
with the glasses wore a sweater like her mother but favored a skirt and the
young looker had a pair of tight jeans and a baggy t-shirt.
“Hi.” Jane said as the two girls approached.
“Girls this is Jane and her brother Trent. They live next door and came over to
save your father from killing himself getting the computer box out of the van
himself.” Amy said and Jane watched both girls turn almost identical looks of
dismay on their father.
“Daria. I’m adopted. I swear.” The older and shorter girl said with an evil
grin.
“Sure you are.” Jane said returning the grin.
“Quinn.” The redhead said with a nice smile.
“Jane and this lump is Trent. Not good for much but I rent him out for manual
labor every once in a while.” Jane said smacking Trent on the shoulder.
“You live next door.” The redhead mused and Jane guessed she was staring at the
uncut grass and almost indescribable sculpture on the front lawn.
“Yep.” Jane said.
“You go to Lawndale High, what grade?” Daria asked.
“10th.” Jane answered.
“Same as me and Quinn here is in 9th.” Daria responded.
“The baby huh … me too.” Jane offered an understanding look.
“At least your brother is useful for heavy lifting. Daria can’t even reach the
top shelf.” Quinn replied and Jane heard no hurtful intent only the same
playful banter.
“Girls.” Amy said with a smile and both daughters smiled knowingly.
:I bet that’s about as bad as it ever gets between them. I got robbed in the
sibling department. Well except for Trent.: Jane thought.
“So if you two wanted to help I think we could offer lunch.” Amy offered as she
looked out of the sea of boxes still waiting to be taken into the house.
“Cool.” Trent answered at once.
“Jake put that down before you kill yourself.” Amy said annoyed as Jake started
lifting the carton again.
“We’ll get this one.” Jane laughed and with relative ease she and Trent lifted
the heavy carton and started toward the house.
“Quinn direct them please.” Amy said with a grin.
Jake watched them carry the box into the house with his daughters following
them.
“They seem nice.” Amy smiled and hugged her husband.
“It looks like a great new start.” Jake returned the hug.
By lunchtime everyone was exhausted and Jane found herself grudgingly enjoying
spending time with the sisters and in fact the entire family and even Trent
seemed to be having a good time.
“So your parents travel a lot?” Amy said carefully but it still set off warning
bells in Jane’s mind.
“I guess but I take care of Janey and she takes care of me.” Trent answered
missing the possible problems letting out that information might bring.
Amy just shook her head and sighed.
“Relax.” Daria whispered from next to Jane, making sure no one else heard.
“If you two need anything don’t hesitate to ask.” Amy said honestly.
“Thanks.” Trent nodded.
“So Trent my man would you be interested in making a little extra money. This
place is a fixer upper and I’m not much shakes with a hammer.” Jake asked.
“I can do some stuff.” Trent nodded.
“Our door keeps falling off.” Quinn said adding to the growing list of needed
repairs.
“So what brings you to Lawndale?” Jane asked.
“Jake got an offer with Landon development. He is a marking consultant. I do
freelance writing and copy work.” Amy answered with a smile.
“This place is going to be great. It’s bigger than the old house and the people
seem a lot nicer.” Quinn declared.
“Wait till you start school. The sharks swim in packs there.” Jane groaned.
“So do we.” Daria dismissed the concern.
Jane sat down on Daria’s bed and watched Trent quickly re-hang the door as
Quinn quickly put away her clothes and Daria setup her PC.
“Who’s the shutterbug?” Jane asked looking at the collection of cameras.
“Daria.” Quinn answered. “I paint a little but mostly I like designing
clothes.”
“If you need to develop anything, my dad has all the stuff and he’s never
around so feel free to come over and borrow the bathroom.” Jane answered.
“Thanks but I write more than anything these days.” Daria shrugged.
“That should do it.” Trent announced and started swinging the door to confirm
it wouldn’t fall off.
“Thank you.” Quinn said smiling.
“Ya the idea of not having a door was disconcerting.” Daria sighed.
“Scared of someone walking in?” Jane mused.
“Loud nocturnal activities of parents.” Daria and Quinn both shuddered.
“Ouch.” Jane looked with sympathy at the girls.
Jane finished up her painting and quickly started another and found herself
painting a sickening sweet family portrait of the Morgendorffers.
“That’s pretty good.” Trent said coming in and flopping on her bed.
“So what did you think of them?” Jane asked.
“Seem nice and the extra cash is going to come in handy.” Trent answered.
“I can’t believe I might have made two new friends and I didn’t have to kill
anyone or rub a lamp or anything.” Jane smirked.
“The wheel does turn Janey. It just seems like it doesn’t when it’s on top of
you.” Trent said leaving a speechless Jane behind.
:Where the hell did that come from.: Jane thought impressed.
Jane was awaken by a sudden pounding on the front door of her house that sent
her hurrying to open the door still asleep.
“WHAT?” Jane growled.
“You are so not a morning person.” Daria smirked at her. “It’s school time and
my dad wanted to know if you wanted a ride.”
“School doesn’t start for hours.” Jane said without looking a any form of time
keeping device.
“School starts in an hour but my Mom figured you would be a late riser and
suggested I come wake you up.” Daria sighed.
“A ride sounds great. I’ll get dressed and drink some coffee then go back to
bed.” Jane started.
“C’mon slacker, Mom’s making French toast.” Daria laughed.
“Ok I can forgive the early wake up call for food.” Jane said. “Give me a
minute.”
With that Jane dashed off leaving Daria standing by the door. She looked at the
living room and sighed in relief. The place was cluttered and showed no signs
of anyone that could truly be called an adult but it wasn’t unclean.
Jane returned and followed Daria next door.
“So did it bother your mom about my folks being gone?” Jane came out and asked.
“A little, I won’t lie and say that she isn’t concerned for your safety and
health.” Daria admitted.
“So is she going to do something?” Jane asked nervously.
“Nothing to be worried about. She might invite you and Trent over for dinner
and such and try to mother you a bit but that’s all.” Daria sighed.
“Cool.” Jane said calming herself.
“You really look like her, your mom I mean.” Jane said wanting to change the
subject.
“I know. But it could be worse. I could look like my grandmother.” Daria
laughed.
“Well you have started to shrink.” Jane tried her hand at the playful banter.
“Hummm, unfair I don’t know anything about you so I can’t judge your weak
spots. I guess I could go with flat-chested but that seems to obvious.” Daria
said evilly.
“Ouch. I come from a small breasted people.” Jane laughed.
“That would explain why you’re all so skinny. You starve as infants.” Daria
picked.
“Just for that I’m going to eat all the French toast.” Jane pouted.
“That might work to convince my Mom you’re eating.” Daria laughed.
“Let her know we do eat and stuff. Trent is in a band and he makes money doing
gigs and all the house bills are all taken care of automatically by the rents
so all we need money for is food when they forget to send some.” Jane said
getting serious all of a sudden.
“I’ll make sure she knows.” Daria promised.
They entered the house and headed toward the smells of cooking.
Part 2
Quinn sighed as she pushed the power button on her ancient PC and nothing
occurred.
With a groan she went out the room looking for her sister. She found her in the
living room hooking up the TV.
“Mom said we can’t get cable until her next job.” Quinn mused at her sister.
“And I don’t plan on waiting so I checked the box down the block and hooked us
into one of the neighbors plans and it looks like that includes internet too
but I’ll need to get a cable modem first.” Daria answered.
“Mom’s going to freak if you get arrested for stealing cable again.” Quinn
chuckled.
“You want to watch three channels for the next few months.” Daria replied.
“Of course not.” Quinn admitted. “My computer is dead again.”
“It’s the motherboard. I’ll try to get you a new one as soon as I can get
hooked up with the local geeks.” Daria shrugged. “I should be able to reflash
the bios and get it going for a while.”
“Thank you.” Quinn smiled.
“So what do you think of Jane and Trent?” Daria asked.
“Jane’s cool and Trent’s a hottie and it’s nice having people to hang out with
so close.” Quinn answered.
“Trent’s in a band too so expect to have a few nights of heavy metal keeping us
awake. Jane is kind of nice. I miss Amelia already.” Daria sighed.
“It’s only a few hours away and if you get the internet up then you two can
chat.” Quinn said understandingly.
“I know and I think I’m going to like hanging out with Jane. You believe they
got her stuck in some self esteem class after school every day.” Daria sighed.
“That’s crazy. I still can’t believe the people at this school anyway.” Quinn
groaned as Daria turned on the TV and cable showed up. “Cool.”
“You’re welcome.” Daria laughed.
“Umm.” Quinn started.
“I’m heading to get the disk for your PC now. I’ll meet you upstairs.” Daria
said with a smirk.
Quinn watched as Daria worked her magic and revived her PC.
“Hey Amiga.” Jane called from down the hall.
They heard her stomping their way.
“There you are. Your Dad let me. Hey did you know that you guys have the full
cable package. I didn’t think anyone on this street had that. You don’t mind if
I come over to watch any movies that comes on for say the next forever do you?”
Jane laughed.
“Did my Dad notice the cable was on?” Daria asked nervously.
“Ya. He said it must be left on from the last homeowner.” Jane smirked evilly.
“Cool I love it when he creates my alibi for me.” Daria returned with a grin.
“Hey it’s working.” Quinn said as her PC started to boot correctly.
“That’ll be 25 bucks please.” Daria replied.
“Put it on my bill.” Quinn returned.
“You two want to go to the Zon tonight. Trent isn’t playing.” Jane promised.
“I’m in.” Quinn said quickly.
“I’ll ask Mom.” Daria said upbeat.
Amy offered to drop the three girls off at the club and give the typical no
drinking or anything else speech before driving away.
“Hey Janey.” Trent called from a collection of tables as he waved them over.
“Hey Trent. Who’s on tonight.” Jane asked.
“Looks like the Harpies and some no name band.” Trent said then he nodded
toward Daria and Quinn.
The girls each took a seat and waited for the band to start playing.
“Hey Quinn so what was the deal with the fashion club?” Jane asked.
“I tried to join but apparently my shopping budget isn’t high enough for the
bitch, slow and squeak.” Quinn grumbled.
“Don’t feel bad. I used to be friends with all these people until middle school
and then they all realized they either had money or belonged to some special
cliché.” Jane shrugged.
“I just can’t see blowing two hundred dollars on one outfit for school. Maybe a
nice dress but on jeans. That’s just crazy.” Quinn said shaking her head.
“Just be glad you don’t have glasses.” Daria said wearily. “Every time I have
to watch them shell out a couple hundred for these I want to cry.” She pointed
to her glasses.
“No offense it’s kind of nice hanging out with someone who understands those
problems.” Jane said. “I mean when your backpack rips up sometimes it’s not a
good week to go replace it.”
“Amen.” Daria replied.
The band started and the group started enjoying the music. Daria enjoyed
watching the crowd more than anything as she made up stories about various
people as she watched them dance and interact with each other.
Quinn talked with some girl that was hanging off Trent’s friend Jessie as Jane
tossed comments her away.
“And then I burned the school down.” Jane said before kicking her on the leg.
“Ouch.” Daria complained.
“She does that all the time.” Quinn laughed.
“I was thinking.” Daria defended herself.
“You were spacing as I was pouring out my deepest secrets.” Jane said looking
annoyed.
“The fact you like to run and have a crush on a dumb as a rock football player
is hardly what I call deep.” Daria offered.
Jane pulled back looking surprised. “How?”
“I heard everything you said. I’m sorry I wasn’t showing more interest but I
tend to zone out.” Daria shrugged.
“That’s freaky.” Jane said then smiled.
Daria just shrugged her shoulders.
A sudden burst of smoke rolled over the table and started them all coughing.
“Fog machine exploded.” Someone said from near the stage.
“Out.” Trent said pointing toward the door.
Quinn looked confused and Daria grabbed her hand and started pulling her to the
exit. Jane and Trent were both following.
“Another night ruined because of crappy equipment.” A tall blonde haired woman
complained as the club emptied. Daria remembered her playing on the stage.
“The amps are ruined.” The lead singer of the band said looking ready to hit
something.
“Chill Monique, I’ll talk to the guys and see if we can spot you some
equipment.” Trent said and Daria saw the smile the two exchanged.
“Thanks Trent.” Monique sighed.
“Maybe Daria can fix them. She can fix anything.” Quinn bragged then pointed at
her sister and Daria started to deny it but Monique started talking.
“How much you charge?” She asked looking at Daria.
“Depends on what’s wrong with it. Usually parts and a couple of bucks to make
it worth my while.” Daria answered and noticed several people looking at her
now.
:Way to go Quinn. If I can get in as the repair tech for this bunch then I
can make some decent coin.: She though grudgingly.
The equipment malfunction ended the night for them and it wasn’t long before
they were back at the Lane house watching TV.
“Any chance of getting a better hookup on the cable here?” Jane asked as her TV
snowed slightly.
“It looks like a loose wire. I’ll take care of it tomorrow.” Daria agreed.
“Thank you. Max did it before he fried off all his hair.” Jane smirked.
“Amateur.” Daria groaned.
“Daria I know it’s rough to be without TV and you might have fooled your father
but we both know you rigged the cable back on.” Amy said after the girls had
gotten home.
“Trent loaned me a cable modem he got from somewhere. I think it’s going to
work and then we’ll have cable internet and you won’t have to drive into town
to the library just to upload whatever you’re working on.” Daria offered
calmly.
“Daria.” Amy sighed.
“Look Mom I know it’s wrong but it’s just as wrong for them to price the
service so high. I’m striking a blow for the working man.” Daria smiled as she
said it.
“Ok and I’m sure you’re going to use the access to help feed starving children
in Africa.” Amy smiled back.
“Don’t forget the rain forests I’ll be saving.” Daria laughed.
“Fine but if they come looking I want the box gone and that goes double for the
modem. I know it’s hard but we’re trying.” Amy said brushing her daughter’s
hair away from her glasses.
“I know and I think I might be fixing some music equipment and that should help
out a little.” Daria offered.
“That’s sweet but I think we can handle everything. Just not much left over for
extras.” Amy said slightly sad looking.
“Me and Quinn don’t mind. Trust me this is better than having parents that
don’t know we exist or are too busy making money to take care of us.” Daria
said truthfully.
“Go on to bed, all this sweet talk is making me slightly specious.” Amy said
with a grin.
Quinn was waiting for her as she entered the room they shared and looked
anxious. “So?”
“She’s letting us keep the cable for now. I think I used the last of the fond
hippie memories though.” Daria sighed as she quickly changed into her night
clothes and climbed into bed.
“Unfair. Wasn’t that for when I lost my virginity?” Quinn pouted slightly.
“Sorry. We’ll come up with something if that ever happens.” Daria offered.
“It’s going to happen at some point.” Quinn replied as she got into her bed.
“I don’t think there’s any rush on it.” Daria said nicely.
“I know but … I don’t know.” Quinn sighed.
“So you ok with the whole fashion club thing?” Daria asked as she turned off
her light.
“I would have never tried to join if I hadn’t met that girl Stacy first. It
just would have been nice to show someone my sketches.” Quinn admitted.
“Well maybe there are some other clubs for you to join.” Daria said after Quinn
turned her light off.
“No thanks. I’m already starting to see how it works at this school and I don’t
want any part of it.” Quinn sighed. “Can you help me study for my English exam
that’s on Monday?”
“Sure.” Daria said. “And relax. I’m sure you will be making some friends in no
time.”
Part 3
“CORRECT Miss. Morgendorffer. Thank YOU for proving that intelligence is indeed
possible in the FRESHMAN class.” Mr. DeMartino said.
“You’re welcome.” Quinn blushed and slid down into her seat.
“Another brain.” Someone whispered behind her and Quinn flushed brightly. Her
teacher watched her shrink as she tried to disappear into the seat.
“OH is THAT a BAD thing. Maybe it would be better if she WAS failing like
you’re going TO do.” DeMartino snarled in the direction the whisper came from.
“Eeep.” A male voice said sounding terrified.
“NOW let’s turn to page 64 and see if ANYONE can figure out what a BOOK is
without help.” He continued.
:Great now they hate smart people too.: Quinn thought miserably.
“Now Darlene I found your story to be touching would you like to read it to
class?” Mr. O’Neil said politely.
Daria continued to read from the text book without looking up.
“Darlene, did you hear what I said?” He asked looking concerned.
Daria continued reading while Jane had to struggle to keep from laughing.
“Maybe she can’t hear me.” He mused out loud. “DARLENE.” He said loudly.
Daria continued to ignore him.
He stepped to her desk and tapped her lightly on the shoulder.
“What?” Daria said with a grin.
“I asked you if you wanted to read your story to the class.” He said nicely.
“No you didn’t.” Daria said closing the book and fixing on his eyes. “You were
talking to someone named Darlene. My name is Daria.” She smiled. “They don’t
even sound like each other so I thought you were talking to someone else.”
Mr. O’Neil backed away quickly and sputtered. “I’m so sorry; I got you mixed up
with someone else.”
He calmed down to the amusement of the class and then asked. “Would you like to
read your story to everyone?”
“No.” Daria replied sweetly.
Jane fell out of her chair as she burst into laughter.
Quinn slammed her locker open and switched books before contemplating closing
her head in the door. The comments had continued through her last three classes
and now she was ready to drop out and go work at a fast food restaurant. The
offers of dates that consisted of her doing their homework stung more than she
wanted to admit.
“Excuse me.” A male voice said from behind her.
“I WON’T DO YOUR DAMN HOMEWORK AND CERTAINLY NOT FOR A PITY DATE.” She turned
and yelled in the face of scruffy headed young man in sun glasses and a
t-shirt.
“Ummm.” He said looking terrified.
“What do you want?” She demanded.
“I just wanted to get to my locker but if that’s a problem I can come back
later.” He said weakly.
Quinn blushed and stepped off to the side. “I’m sorry. It’s been a rough day.”
“No problem.” He offered and quickly grabbed a book from the bottom locker
before standing up. “You should try and relax some.” He said as he started down
the hall.
:Sure in a place where getting good grades is seen as a crime.: She
thought bitterly.
“That was the most awesome thing I’ve seen all week.” A girl said moving up
next to her.
Quinn looked at the girl now standing next to her. She was blonde and wore a
death head jacket over a t-shirt and patched blue jeans.
“I’m having a bad day.” Quinn answered.
“Don’t sweat it. Shaggy needs a good screaming at every once in awhile. I’m
Jennifer.” The blonde said holding out her hand that Quinn took at once.
“Quinn.” She said cautiously.
“Let’s start moving before we’re late for Math. I swear seeing you go off on
him almost makes up for the four months I dated him.” Jennifer joked.
“Bad ending.” Quinn said understandingly.
“Not really but I’m still not happy with him.” Jennifer shrugged.
“This is my stop.” Quinn said standing in front of her math class.
“I’m across the hall where they’re trying to teach the jocks how to count to
twenty without taking off their shoes.” Jennifer said looking slightly
embarrassed.
“Maybe I’ll see you around.” Quinn said carefully.
“I’m predicting in about 52 minutes. Lets grab lunch and hang out on the lawn.”
Jennifer suggested.
“That sounds cool.” Quinn said as first bell rung.
“Then it’s a plan. A bunch of us do it to avoid the torture that is the
lunchroom.” Jennifer said as she hurried across the hall.
:Damn it Daria and Jane were right. At least I hope they were.: She
thought as she entered her advanced placement math class.
“Ya well if I wanted to be a brain I might study too.” Kevin Thompson said
glaring at Daria. He seemed to be taking offense to the fact she knew the
answers and had no problem sharing them.
“I don’t think we need to worry about that.” Daria responded.
“That’s right. I’m the QB and I don’t need any of this school junk.” Kevin said
almost proudly.
“I hope you’re really good because without football you are going to become the
dumbest QB sleeping in the alley.” Daria responded back.
“Hey.” Kevin exclaimed.
“That’s not very nice.” His arm candy said twirling her hair.
“Neither is looking down on someone who is smarter than you just because it
makes you feel better.” Daria fired off.
“At least I’m not a brain.” Kevin retorted.
“Oh boy.” Jane snickered.
“Kevvie lets go leave the grumpy girl alone. I think it might be THAT time of
month for her.” Brittany said at a loud whisper.
“Oh that explains it.” Kevin said following after her.
“I’m having a hard time trying to not hit him.” Daria grumbled after they left.
“You’ll build up a tolerance to him after a while.” Jodie Landon said coming up
behind them.
“Hi Jodie.” Daria said nicely looking really nervous.
“Hey.” Jane said surprised at Daria’s sudden turn in mood.
“Are either of you two interested in helping out with an after school tutoring
program?” Jodie asked.
“No.” Jane answered at once.
“I’m sorry I can’t. I’m fixing some amps for a band. It’s kind of my job.”
Daria said weakly.
“Ok but if you get some free time and want to help just let me know.” Jodie
said with a smile before walking away.
Jane looked at Daria and noticed the sweat on her forehead. “What’s up Amiga?”
She asked.
“Her Dad is my Dad’s boss. I can’t take a chance on offending her.” Daria
admitted.
“Damn.” Jane said shaking her head.
“Looks like Quinn made some new friends.” Daria said as they entered their
history classroom and glanced out the window.
Jane sighed when she saw the bunch that Quinn was with. “Have a talk with her.
They’re good people but lets just say they believe in better living through
chemistry. The blonde has a nickname. Burnout girl and she earned it.” Jane
explained.
“Quinn’s been offered that before and always turned it down but I’ll talk to
her.” Daria agreed.
Quinn and Daria walked home with each other as Jane had to attend her self
esteem class.
“And then Jennifer told him to shut up or she was going to describe in great
detail what he looks like after sex.” Quinn laughed.
Daria sighed and dove straight in. “You know I suck at this big sister stuff so
I’m going to mess this up. I hear your new friends like to do things.” Daria
said.
“I know. This is about the drugs right. I promise I’m not going to use any but
I don’t care if they do.” Quinn shrugged.
“Thank you for making this easy.” Daria let out the breath she was holding.
“No problem. I’ll use it against you at a later time.” Quinn laughed.
They sat around the dinner table and Daria couldn’t help but find her mother
worrying over Trent amusing. His head sported several bruises and one small
cut.
“It’s find I just fell asleep.” Trent sighed.
“At the wheel of a car.” Amy interrupted him.
“Not a car really. The Tank.” Trent answered.
“Cool name.” Jake nodded.
“It made it fine but I busted the window with my head.” Trent shrugged.
“Maybe a good night’s sleep would be in order to stop that from happening.” Amy
scolded.
“I’ll make sure he gets some sleep tonight.” Jane promised.
“And you little lady need to eat something. I swear you disappear if you turn
sideways.” Amy put more food on the plate in front of Jane.
“I’m not arguing.” Jane smiled as she dug in.
“I’ll be more careful.” Trent promised.
“We hope so. We sure would miss you if something happened.” Jake said warmly.
“How’s the book coming Mom?” Quinn asked seeing Trent and Jane’s discomfort.
“Almost finished. I swear I think some of these writers don’t even bother to
check their facts.” She sighed.
“That must be exciting?” Jane commented. “Getting to read books before anyone
else does.”
“Sometimes but I get so caught up correcting mistakes I forget to read them
sometimes.” Amy admitted.
“She corrected a love note once.” Jake laughed.
Amy blushed brightly and nodded it was true setting off a chorus of laughter at
the table.
“So how is school going?” Amy asked as Daria and Quinn got ready for bed.
“Lets see. The average IQ is maybe 60 and the teachers are insane oh and Dad’s
boss’s daughter is little Miss. Volunteer for everything.” Daria responded.
“That’s being generous. I would have said 40 tops.” Quinn grumbled. “They act
like it’s a bad thing to be smart.”
“The schools here are a lot bigger than the ones you went to in Georgia but
hopefully once we get settled in things will start improving. Your father is
doing well at his job and they like his ideas.” Amy assured them.
“What about you?” Daria asked.
“There are three different publishers that have offices with driving distance
and I’m talking with all of them. As much as I like not having to keep regular
hours, a steady paycheck would be nice again and then maybe I could start
writing again.” Amy smiled.
“So we’re doing pretty well. New house, new prospects a great new start. So I
shouldn’t go on a murder spree.” Quinn groaned.
“Well at least wear a mask and gloves sweetie.” Amy chuckled.
“Can we vandalize something?” Daria asked trying to sound hopeful.
“Sure but make sure to use correct grammar.” Amy laughed.
“Well that would get us caught for sure.” Daria groaned.
“That’s assuming they can read.” Quinn added.
“Good point. If we use words of 6 letters or more then they might think it was
messages from space aliens.” Daria joked.
“I swear I think I should have gotten you two video games instead of books when
you were younger.” Amy sighed.
“I like video games.” Daria inputted.
“That’s because you’re a nerd.” Quinn sighed.
“Listen to you little Miss. Doctor Who wannabe.” Daria laughed. Quinn looked
prepared to defend her show but Amy held up her hands.
“Girls I really don’t want to listen to another round of American Sci-fi vs
British Sci-fi.” Amy smiled then moved over and hugged each girl. “Get some
sleep.”
“Night Mom.” Quinn and Daria both sent out at the same time.
Part 4
Daria stretched her arms after putting the soldering iron into its station.
:That’s both stack amps now if I can just find out what’s causing the static
in the box.: She thought as she looked over the various band equipment.
She was setup in the garage as her tinkering had in the past single handedly
saved almost every piece of electronics the family owned.
One of the Lawndale geeks was going through her junk boxes looking for
something to trade for a new motherboard for Quinn’s PC.
“C’mon Goat. I’m desperate here.” Daria joked.
“Well you won’t go out with me so you aren’t that desperate yet.” He replied
without missing a beat.
She looked over his goatee covered face and long hair and sighed. “Look this is
supposed to be a parts exchange not the love connection.”
“Fine.” He said and pulled out a pair of video cards. “These will work in my
server.”
“So we have a deal.” Daria said hopefully.
“I think so. Unless you got any hard drives around.” He laughed as he pushed
his square frame glasses back from his nose. Daria just shook her head no.
“Thanks I’m tired of reflashing my sister’s bios every month.” She smiled and
groaned inwardly at the puppy dog look he got.
:I should be ashamed but it helps to be the only geek girl for miles.:
She thought.
“Hey I’m having a LAN party on my private WOW server, maybe you could stop by
and stomp a few people next weekend.” He said as he broke out in sweat.
“Sounds cool. You know I never turn down the chance to kill off my classmates.”
Daria smirked.
Quinn was spending the afternoon studying with her new friends at Jennifer’s
house.
“Put that away Dewey.” Quinn said sternly as Shaggy pulled out his pipe and was
digging for a lighter.
“Hey.” He said frowning at the use of his name.
“She told you no smoking around her and that counts.” Jennifer said pointing at
the pipe then she kicked him.
“Ouch. I can’t study straight.” He complained.
“I don’t think I can study stoned but I don’t want to find out.” Quinn replied.
“Hey we all respect other people’s choices. You want to toke up then go in the
backyard. If I don’t pass my next math test they’re going to put me in the
class with Kevin.” Jennifer said and returned to studying the problems in front
of her.
“You’re a bad influence.” Shaggy said shaking his head at Quinn.
“I know it’s a curse.” Quinn smirked.
“Fine, I need a soda. Anyone else want one?” Shaggy sighed.
“I’ll take a thunder.” Jennifer smiled and Quinn just held up her half full one
as answer.
“Ok.” Shaggy said and he left to find the kitchen.
Quinn watched Jennifer stare as he left. :Ok so these two are going to be
dating again real soon.: She thought with an evil smirk.
“Ok fine I’m still crushing on him.” Jennifer groaned.
“I didn’t say anything.” Quinn laughed.
“You thought it but he messed around on me. At least he told me and let me dump
him.” The blonde replied sadly, laying her head on the math book.
“Maybe he learned his lesson.” Quinn offered.
“You’ve met him right. He doesn’t learn, he guesses.” Jennifer giggled causing
Quinn to laugh to.
“What’s so funny?” Shaggy asked as he entered the room.
“Nothing.” Quinn smiled causing Jennifer to start laughing.
“Well don’t tell me then. I’ll just try to guess it.” He said trying to look
serious.
Both girls broke out into laughter.
Daria washed up in the kitchen and made herself a sandwich before heading into
the living room. Her parents were going over a piece of mail and she hoped it
wasn’t another bill.
“Where does she get these ideas?” Amy sighed.
“No clue but since we weren’t planning on it I guess it doesn’t matter.” Jake
said flatly.
“I just wish … Hi Daria.” Amy said looking up.
“Hey kiddo.” Jake smiled.
“What’s up?” Daria said.
Amy and Jake exchanged glances before her mother answered. “Just a bill we’re
contesting. They keep sending it and hope we’ll just pay it without looking at
it.”
“Oh.” Daria said and stored the information under the ya right category.
“How’s the repairs going?” He father asked.
“Got the big stuff all done. I’m hoping to have everything ready to go before
Wednesday.” Daria answered.
“Oh I forgot. They’re tossing out the old PCs at work and Mrs. Rowe said I
could haul them away. Should be something you can use in the lot.” Jake said.
“Cool.” Daria said greedily.
Amy playfully slapped Jake on the shoulder. “No fair I’m supposed to be the
favorite parent.” She smiled.
“It was all your mother’s idea.” Jake played along.
Daria just smirked. “Sure it was. Did you two get your W-2s yet. I’m raring to
start filing taxes.”
“All but one but it’s been mailed.” Jake nodded.
“Spending our refund already?” Amy smirked making her look even more like
Daria.
“Well Earned income credit has gone up again so I think this year will be
great.” Daria admitted.
“Just so long as I don’t get audited.” Jake sighed.
“Oh and I’m interviewing at Cocker publishing on Monday. Looks like I’m
rejoining the 9-5 crowd.” Amy informed her.
“You mean Quinn and I will be latchkey kids.” Daria answered in mock horror.
“I’ll be home around 5 so don’t even try it.” Amy responded.
“I’m kidding.” Daria said knowing her mother would prefer being there but
economics just didn’t support that choice.
“I know. When’s Quinn going to be home?” Amy said with a frown.
“After the study session at Jennifer’s.” Daria shrugged.
“Ok and you can spend the night at Jane’s but I reserve the right to walk over
and check you’re there.” Amy answered the request from earlier in the day.
“We’re just watching some TV and complaining about school.” Daria advised her.
Quinn was half way home before she heard someone calling her name.
She turned and saw Shaggy approaching. :Red alert, this is not a drill. Your
best friend has feelings for him.: Quinn thought.
“Hey Quinn.” He said as he caught up to her.
“What’s up?” She asked nervously.
He looked slightly embarrassed. “I was wondering if you … could do me favor.”
He asked.
Quinn let out a breath of relief. “What?”
“Well you know I dated Jen but I got stupid and she dumped me and I was
wondering if you could maybe put some feelers out about what would happen if I
asked her out again.” He said.
“I can do that.” Quinn nodded.
“Thanks.” He smiled.
“But if you cheated on her again then I would never talk to you again and I’m
pretty sure she wouldn’t either.” Quinn said harshly.
Jane continued her attempt to drag her friend out for something besides TV.
“It’s a party not the end of life as we know it. You might have some fun.” Jane
groaned.
“I’m going to a party next weekend.” Daria defended her reluctance.
“A geek party where you all sit in a room and talk to each other on the screen
instead of turning around and talking.” Jane complained.
“Fine but I don’t think Quinn would want to go to a party at a member of the
fashion club’s house.” Daria sighed.
“Well hopefully Stacy will annoy Sandi early then her and Tiffany will bail.”
Jane shrugged. “And Stacy is so nice that she invites anyone who finds out
about the party and it doesn’t start until late so your geekfest will be over.”
Jane laughed.
“Maybe.” Daria relented.
“Yes score!” Jane cheered.
“Hey do that again.” Daria grinned evilly.
“What?” Jane said confused.
“Raise your arms over your head. I think I saw some sign of breasts.” Daria
smirked.
Daria ducked the flying paintbrush.
Quinn sat with her parents in the living room watching TV. Her parents decided
to bring up the last subject she wanted to discuss.
“Quinn tell us about your new friends.” Amy asked.
Quinn groaned. “Ok so they have a bad reputation but they respect my choices to
not do that kind of stuff.”
“What stuff?” Jake asked.
“Aghhhh.” Quinn wanted to scream. “Why do you never trap Daria with your
insidious mind games?”
“Because she answers our questions not the ones she thinks we’re going to ask.”
Amy chuckled.
“I just want to have some friends.” Quinn said sadly.
“And we want that to and no one is saying you can’t be friends but be careful.”
Amy said sternly.
“I promise.” Quinn said willing to agree to anything to end the topic.
Part 5
“I’m dead again.” Quinn declared. Her soldier was lying in a pool of its own
blood.
“That’s what you get for napping … HEY aren’t we supposed to be on the same
side.” Jane whined as Daria blew her tank up.
“You killed my baby sister now you must pay.” Daria snickered as she landed the
helicopter she was piloting on screen and climbed out.
The three girls were sitting in Daria and Quinn’s room each at a computer with
the one Jane was using looking like a Frankenstein monster.
“I can’t believe they were just throwing away these computers.” Quinn said
patting her new tower like it was a pet.
“Did I thank you yet for mine?” Jane asked seriously. Daria had carried one
over to her house almost as soon as Quinn got hers.
“You did and the painting is great.” Daria said pointing to the family portrait
Jane had gifted to her.
“I want a landscape.” Quinn sighed looking at the bare space over her wall and
sighing.
“You’re evil. You want me to take my grand talent and use it to create a plain
landscape.” Jane groaned.
“I’m sure nothing YOU made would be plain.” Quinn said with a smirk.
“That was good.” Jane said impressed.
“You’ve been practicing young apprentice.” Daria said sounding amused. Quinn
just smiled at the praise.
“I’m home.” Their mother’s voice called down the hall.
“We’re back here killing Jane.” Daria called back.
“Once you’re done wash up and come have some ice cream.” Amy replied.
“Hey!” Jane laughed.
“So Quinn you in this weekend?” Jane asked as Daria started shutting down her
PC.
“Yes but I’m walking home if they start on me again.” Quinn responded.
“Hey the only problem I foresee is when all the guys start hitting on you when
they see you in something other than a pair of jeans and baggy t-shirt.” Jane
snickered.
“Ya right.” Quinn muttered.
The girls started down the hall moments later and arrived in the kitchen in
time to hear the end of the call.
“Yes Rita we’ll be here and it’ll be great to see you again.” Amy smiled
tensely. She was serving out bowls of ice cream and looked annoyed.
“Uh oh.” Quinn groaned.
“What?” Jane asked looking puzzled.
“Mom’s big sister. They don’t get along.” Daria answered as she moved to rescue
three of the bowls of ice cream.
“Better than our grandmother.” Quinn laughed.
“Ya that’s a war you don’t want to see.” Daria agreed.
“Why?” Jane asked curious.
“No clue, it’s not for young minds.” Daria answered making the quotes in the
air.
“I don’t know what they’re all complaining about I have to deal with you and I
manage just fine.” Quinn teased her sister. Daria just reached over and swung
at slap over Quinn’s head.
Amy hung up the phone and joined them at the table.
“Aunt Rita is coming to visit.” Daria stated.
“At least she isn’t bringing Erin.” Amy sighed.
“Mom I think it’s time to talk about me getting my own place.” Daria joked.
“Can I move in with you?” Amy smiled.
“Then we’ll have to take Quinn and Dad will end up sleeping on the front steps
so sure.” Daria smiled.
“I’ll stay here. I can just change the locks and not answer the door when she
knocks.” Quinn chuckled.
“Just so you know I love family drama so I’ll be coming over to watch.” Jane
smirked.
Quinn stood with her sister and Jane on the back porch of the Rowe house having
taken the first chance to break out of the crowd of their classmates.
“I told you they wouldn’t have a chance to give you a hard time before Sandi
decided to steal Stacy’s thunder.” Jane said shaking her head at the scene that
occurred only minutes before.
“Why does she put up with them?” Quinn said her face still wet from the empathy
tears she had cried over the treatment of the other girl.
“Because once Sandi got her claws into her, she scared everyone off. Even me.”
Jane admitted.
“What?” Daria chuckled.
“In grade school me and Stacy were friends but once Sandi became … well Sandi
she started pulling thralls and Stacy got nabbed and since I didn’t meet the
requirements I didn’t. I kind of just bailed.” Jane admitted sheepishly.
“That’s sad.” Quinn said before noticing Daria was staring in the backyard. She
turned to look and saw Stacy wandering in the backyard.
“I’m going to bail on you two now.” Quinn said before starting down the porch.
“But just for tonight.”
Jane looked and saw Stacy and understood, Daria just watched.
“Quinn’s got a new puppy.” She sighed.
“What are you talking about?” Jane mused.
“When she was 10 she found a half dead puppy in an alley and nursed it back to
life then found it a good home. She has this knack for saving things.” Daria
explained.
“So now she’s going to save Stacy?” Jane asked not understanding.
“She’s going to save Stacy from herself.” Daria answered.
Jane watched Quinn approach the other girl and she didn’t need to hear the
words to know what was happening.
:This is the part where Stacy says she’s ok and then Quinn just nods but she
doesn’t leave just stays and now Stacy is telling her to go have fun at the
party and Quinn. Oh that’s slick make her take you back into the party. But
she’s not ready to face them yet so you both stay here.: Jane thought
watching.
“Hey let’s see if they got a TV in this place.” Daria nudged her and Jane
followed as Daria returned into the noise and chaos.
The next few days didn’t change much from the normal routines the girls had
settled into and the dreaded event was rapidly approaching.
“It’s not to late to move.” Daria said as she waited in the living room with
her father and sister.
“It’ll be fine. Rita just wants to rub your grandmother’s money in our faces
and then she’ll be gone.” Jake snorted.
“I don’t understand why they act so snotty to us. It’s not like we ask them for
their money.” Quinn said and Daria knew that a fight was brewing if Rita
started on their mother.
:Little Quinn isn’t so little anymore and god help Rita if she starts in on
Mom about anything.: Daria thought with respect.
The door started to open and Rita’s voice wafted in like the stink of a skunk.
“I’m just saying that maybe if you and Jake got what was rightfully yours you
could afford a better place. Not that I’m knocking this place it’s certainly an
improvement on the old house.” Rita was saying and her smile snapped into place
as soon as she saw the girls.
“Daria, Quinn! Come give your aunt a hug.” Rita said almost cheerfully.
“Hi Aunt Rita, you look so young and thin.” The girls mocked the greeting they
had created as children.
“Kissing up is always welcome even if it’s sarcastic.” Rita countered and
accepted the brief hugs from her two nieces.
“Have a nice drive from the airport?” Jake asked as he took Rita’s bags from
Amy.
“It gave me a nice chance to catch up with my baby sister.” Rita said smiling
and Daria wanted to run away screaming.
“We started dinner.” Quinn told her mother.
“Quinn started dinner and I’m playing cleanup girl.” Daria quickly pushed the
credit back to Quinn.
“Thank you.” Amy said looking ready for a stiff drink then bed. Daria made a
mental to dig out the power cord for her walkman because it was going to be a
loud night once her parents went to bed.
“So Rita how’s the love life?” Jake said and Daria give him credit for
memorizing the queue cards Amy had made up.
Later they were sitting around the dining room table.
“So are you two staying out of trouble this year?” Rita asked looking at Daria.
“You get one arrest for stealing cable and nobody ever forgets it.” Daria sighs
with a smile.
“She’s staying out of trouble and has a job fixing equipment for the local
bands.” Amy added.
“Well it’s good that you’re understanding you can’t get a free ride out of life
anymore.” Rita said in a superior tone.
“Why? You didn’t.” Daria retorted quickly and almost winced at her mother’s
face.
“Now you sound like your mother.” Rita snorted.
“RITA.” Amy said in a loud warning tone.
Rita blushed and nodded. “I’m sorry that was rude of me.”
“I took it as a complement.” Daria replied making her mom smile.
Rita glanced between Daria and Amy and sighed. “I guess you should.”
A few hours later as Daria made her way to the kitchen to get a drink she heard
her mother speaking.
“I can’t believe you said that.” She was sighing.
“I’m so sorry, she just sounded so much like …” Rita started.
“Don’t. Daria is my daughter.” Amy said strongly.
“Of course she is and everyone agrees it’s for the best. Both her and Quinn.”
Rita agreed.
Neither of them saw Daria hurrying back to the room she shared with her sister
as they left the kitchen.
Part 6
“So what do you think they were talking about?” Quinn whispered.
“No clue but I think it’s time for some investigating.” Daria replied
whispering herself.
Quinn glanced at their closed door and Daria knew what was coming. “Ohhhhhhh
Jake.” Their mother cried out loudly.
“Arghhhh.” Daria cried and grabbed up her headphones and started listening to
music as Quinn did likewise.
“This is cruel and unusual torture.” Quinn whined judging by her mouth
movements.
The next morning the girls met up with Jane.
“C’mon it’s like waiting for a train wreak you know is coming.” Jane pushed.
“I don’t even like roller hockey and I can’t see wasting money just to watch
DeMartino die. Chances are I’ll get to see that when he goes nuts and brings a
gun in and starts shooting students.” Daria shrugged.
“Good point.” Jane said realizing she had been trumped.
“I hear Stacy got kicked out of the fashion club because she ate lunch with
some unpopular girl.” Jane then turned to Quinn.
“We had lunch and Stacy knew she would get kicked out of the club for being my
friend and she was willing to do it. She just wants people to like her.” Quinn
said sadly.
“Too many people are quick to take advantage of that.” Daria inputted.
“She’s really sweet and I think she’s a little tired of spending all her time
talking about clothes. She writes really bad poetry and likes to sing and she
isn’t bad.” Quinn shrugged.
“So now what?” Jane asked.
“Well her and Jennifer get along ok and everyone has gotten the idea to not
smoke up around me.” Quinn answered. “ I guess we’ll take it as it comes.”
"That's cool." Jane answered.
“First we need to solve the mystery.” Daria added with a nod.
“Oh god please don’t tell me we have to get a big dog and ugly van.” Jane
groaned.
“Ah-hum.” Daria said pointing to the Tank.
“I hate big dogs.” Jane sighed in defeat.
“I get to be Velma.” Quinn declared.
“You are so Daphne.” Daria snorted.
“Who does that make me Shaggy?” Jane complained.
“We have a Shaggy or we could use Trent for that.” Quinn mused. “You must be
Fred.”
“What!” Jane groaned.
“I figure as soon as my parents take Rita out for her tour of Lawndale we
search the entire house for anything that might be useful.” Daria said ignoring
her.
“Like what?” Quinn asked.
“Anything that might give us clues on why there is so much drama between Mom
and her family.” Daria said after thinking for a few moments.
“Sounds like a plan.” Jane replied. “Now do we synchronize our watches now?”
“Ah no. I think we can do this without that.” Daria said looking at Jane
amused.
“But … but it would be cool.” Jane joked.
“Here Jane I’ll synchronize watches with you.” Quinn sighed.
Daria watched the two girls setting their watches and shook her head.
“OK we’re going to be back at 10 so no parties, no dates and don’t sell the
house unless they offer 30% over market.” Amy said as the adults prepared to
leave.
“Got it.” Daria couldn’t help but laugh.
“Now I know you girls have something planned so I’m just going to say that I
trust and love you.” Amy said evilly.
“Oh you’re really good.” Jane laughed.
“We’re not leaving the house the entire time you’re gone.” Daria promised.
“Jennifer might come over later but you said that was ok.” Quinn added.
“Tell her to stop leaving cigarette butts behind the grill.” Amy sighed.
Quinn blushed. “I will.”
“Give her a soda can that way we can just toss the can after she’s leaves.”
Jake suggested.
After the adults left the girls took stock.
“All right there is three of us so split up and search for anything. Court
papers, a diary or an old photo album.” Daria ordered.
“On it Captain.” Jane gave a mock salute.
“Who’s searching Mom and Dad’s room?” Quinn asked nervously.
“I’ll do it.” Daria shrugged.
“But … remember the camera.” Quinn blushed making her sister shudder.
“If it gets to bad I expect you to do the right thing and make it quick and
painless.” Daria said seriously.
Jane just snickered.
Quinn found Daria sitting on her parent’s bed almost two hours later.
“Daria we can’t find anything.” Quinn sighed walking over to her sister.
“I found everything.” Daria said flatly.
Quinn jerked at her sister’s almost lifeless voice. “Ok so what’s the secret?”
Quinn asked.
“You don’t want to know. Trust me you don’t want to know.” Daria said
strangely.
“Of course I want to know.” Quinn replied.
“Ok Amigas I have ordered the pizza and it’s on the way.” Jane said joining
them.
“Could you bring me the phone Jane?” Daria asked quietly.
“Sure.” Jane said taken back by the change in her friend.
“Daria what’s going on?” Quinn demanded. “Tell me.” Quinn insisted.
Daria picked up a folder that was sitting next to her on the bed and pulled out
two folded pieces of paper and Quinn could make out the tiny footprints on the
back of each.
“Our birth certificates.” Quinn said not understanding the problem.
“Read them.” Daria sighed.
“Ok.” Quinn said accepting them and quickly unfolded them. She saw the problem
within seconds.
“No.” She whispered painfully.
“There’s more but it says the same thing.” Daria said patting the folder.
“Why didn’t they tell us?” Quinn looked frightened.
“I can only guess that Mom and Dad didn’t want to hurt us.” Daria shrugged.
“Phone delivery service.” Jane joked as she returned and offered out the phone.
“Thank you.” Daria said and took the phone.
“What the hell is going on?” Jane barked as Quinn started to cry.
“Show her.” Daria sighed as she stared at the phone.
Quinn handed Jane the paperwork and watched as she read it.
“Ohhh.” Jane said and it was clear she saw the problem.
Daria dialed the phone and held it to her ear as it rang.
Jane heard Amy answer.
“Hello.” Amy said.
“Mom I’m sorry.” Daria said weakly.
“What’s wrong?” Amy asked at once.
“I heard you and Aunt Rita talking last night so I went through your room and I
found the folder.” Daria said and Jane felt concern as Daria’s voice shook.
“Oh sweetie.” Amy almost cried.
“Please come home.” Daria cried out.
“We’re coming back right now.” Amy promised. “Your dad says we can be back in
twenty minutes.”
“Thank you.” Daria managed.
“Is Quinn ok?” Jane heard Amy ask.
“She’s crying.” Daria said and then her voice seemed to lock up on her.
Jane took the phone and raised it to her ear.
“They’re really upset Mrs. M.”
“Just try to keep them calm and we’ll be there soon.” Amy said and Jane could
hear she was crying as well.
“I will but you need to hurry.” Jane said and they ended the call.
Jane managed to get both sisters and the folder into the living room and they
waited for the sister’s parents to get home.
“I can understand me but you look just like Mom.” Quinn said in disbelief.
“I don’t know.” Daria replied.
“But my baby pictures?” Quinn pushed.
“I don’t know.” Daria repeated.
“But …” Quinn started again.
“I don’t know Quinn.” Daria said her voice full of pain.
“Well I don’t know if this helps but one person has been your mom and no piece
of paper can ever change that.” Jane offered.
“That’s true.” Quinn said and looked a little better.
“I just want to understand but there is nothing to ever make me think of Mom as
anything other than our Mom.” Daria said strongly.
Jane saw the lights pulled into the driveway and felt her entire body tense as
she heard the commotion outside that led to the door starting to open.
Part 7
Jane left shortly after Amy and Jake arrived. Daria and Quinn sat holding hands
as their parents took seats across from them.
Amy’s face was red and puffy and matched her daughters perfectly. Her hands
shook as she made quick gasps for air.
:Please let it be a lie.: Daria thought and saw the same hope sketched
on her sister’s face and she felt sympathy for the younger girl.
“Please forgive us.” Their mother begged.
“Just tell us what’s going on.” Daria said with a strangling voice.
“First thing should be that we love you both completely.” Jake sighed.
“What happened?” Daria asked with a strangled voice.
“How much do you want to know?” Jake asked weakly.
“All of it.” Quinn demanded. She seemed to be flitting between shock and anger
then finally curiosity.
“First off I guess you know that Amy didn’t give birth to you. For the record
she is my second wife and the best one.” Jake started then stopped as he groped
for words. Amy seemed unable to assist him.
“Who is Helen Barksdale?” Daria asked.
“My first wife and your mother.” Jake answered.
“NO!” Quinn cried out. “Don’t call her that.” She finished weakly.
“She gave birth to you.” Amy responded looking surprised.
“We don’t care. You’re our Mom, mother and everything else.” Daria stated
firmly.
Amy was reduced to tears in second and both her daughters pulled her to the
couch and hugged her tightly.
“When Helen was pregnant with Quinn, her sister Amy, came out to help with
Daria and the new baby when it came.” Jake continued.
“I showed up and tried to help as much as I could. Helen started retreating from
anything to do with Daria so I did it all.” Amy answered. “I was worried about
my sister but it was like a dream come true for me.” She was sitting between
her daughters who had both latched onto her like she might try to escape.
“Why?” Quinn asked.
“I can’t have children of my own.” Amy answered looking ashamed.
“Oh.” Quinn replied.
“By the time Quinn was born, Helen had withdrawn into herself from both Daria
and I. She got the post depression …something afterwards and wouldn’t take care
of Quinn either.” Jake struggled.
“So I had a little baby to take care of. I was so selfish. I was enjoying it so
much I didn’t see my sister needed a different kind of help.” Amy admitted.
“Then Helen just left. The divorce papers showed up about two months later.”
Jake sighed. “I loved Helen but after she just ran off after ignoring us for 5
months I signed the papers and mailed them back.”
“I stayed because you were already my girls and I couldn’t leave you. Even if
Jake hadn’t wanted me to stay I would have.” Amy smiled.
“So you two had an affair.” Daria mused.
“Not until after the divorce. Jake stayed loyal to Helen long after I wanted
him too. It just made sense I guess, we were already living as man and wife
raising you two. I figured it out first and he made me wait until after all the
papers where signed and done.” Amy fidgeted.
“Mom?” Quinn rolled her eyes doubtfully.
“The truth is I started having fantasies that I had Helen’s life the minute I
showed up and that included falling in love with Jake. I swear if Helen hadn’t
left him I wouldn’t have done anything.” Amy blushed as she admitted it.
“She helped me get through it. Took me a while but I smartened up. We got
married 13 months after Quinn was born.” Jake chuckled.
“So Helen the woman who gave birth to us is your sister and she abandoned us
when we were still babies.” Daria deadpanned looking shocked.
“Quinn was two weeks old and you were about 14 months old. Helen just decided
she didn’t want to be a mother.” Amy sighed.
“That’s why you’re in all my baby pictures and I guess it explains why Daria
looks so much like you.” Quinn inputted.
“So why didn’t you tell us the truth?” Daria asked.
“It’s been difficult.” Jake answered.
“After a while Helen started sending threatening letters. We couldn’t have
child support and she wasn’t going to provide for college. We’ve never asked
for anything but she gets the idea we’re going to and sends us legal letters
stating her attention to fight any lawsuits to the death.” Amy tried to explain.
“So she’s a bitch.” Daria responded flatly.
“Daria!” Amy gasped.
“Yes.” Jake answered calmly.
“We were always going to tell you but it was easier to just keep pretending.”
Amy admitted.
“Next time we think Mom and Dad have a secret and I suggest spying on them to
find out, hit me.” Daria groaned looking over at Quinn.
“Roger that.” Quinn smirked sadly.
“So now what?” Jake asked.
“Now nothing. Mom is our Mom and her sister can go climb a tree for all I care.
She left.” Daria spat out harshly.
“Amen.” Quinn nodded.
“Girls please try not to hate her. She just couldn’t ….” Amy tried but lost her
track somewhere.
“Couldn’t love us enough to stick around. I could understand that she left Dad
because that happens all the time but the whole we’ve never met her thing is
unforgivable.” Daria said strongly.
“I don’t hate her. She gave us the best Mom in the world.” Quinn said
tearfully. Daria nodded in response and both girls tightened their grip on Amy.
“Where’s Aunt Rita?” Daria suddenly asked.
“We dropped her off at a motel for the night. She’ll be back in the morning.”
Jake laughed.
“Don’t you want to know anything else about her?” Amy asked clearly surprised.
“No.” Quinn answered at once. “Maybe when I’m not wanting to throw things.”
“She’s a non person who doesn’t matter.” Daria agreed. “She doesn’t want to see
us so why should we care?”
Amy struggled but the lie wouldn’t allow itself to be spoken.
“Hey this explains why we don’t have any brothers or sisters yet.” Quinn exclaimed.
“I guess, with as often as they do that we should be a family of forty by now.”
Daria smirked evilly as both her parents blushed.
Amy blushed and her mouth fished twice with a small grin.
“What?” Daria said catching the movement.
“Rita froze several of her eggs years ago and she’s offered to let me have
them. We’re going to try to have a baby.” Amy smiled.
“Wow.” Daria was stunned.
“I’m very reasonable on my babysitting rates.” Quinn laughed.
“Is that ok?” Jake asked nervously.
“Um you don’t have to ask us.” Daria replied. “I’ve been expecting this
announcement for about ten years or so.” Quinn shrugged and nodded her
agreement.
“You’re still my girls and nothing will ever change that.” Amy promised.
“So seeing as all the secrets are coming out is there anything you girls want
to tell us?” Jake mused.
“Would this mean immunity from prosecution?” Daria hedged.
“Yes.” Jake stated firmly.
“Cool. I need to get on birth control pills. I’m not currently with anyone but
after Bobby I doubt I can go back to platonic dating.” Daria shrugged.
“You owe me a back massage.” Amy elbowed Jake.
“I knew I should have run him over when I had the chance.” Jake grumbled.
Both parents turned and looked at Quinn curiously.
“I haven’t done anything.” Quinn stated firmly. “Not for lack of trying.” She
added with a mutter.
“Quinn!” Amy smiled.
“Ok your Mom will take you both down and get that taken care of and I don’t
want to hear anymore.” Jake said looking discomforted.
“But.” Daria teased.
“Immunity is off the table.” Jake replied.
“Nothing.” Daria smirked.
The next day at Jane’s.
“So your Mom had a sister who was married to your dad but ran off after Quinn
was born then they got married and never told you because she’s a tool.” Jane summed
up.
“Sounds right.” Daria sighed.
“Damn.” Jane swore as she shook her head.
“Don’t forget that our Mom is going to try to have a kid using our Aunt’s
frozen eggs.” Quinn grinned.
“And the medal for screwed up night of the year goes to Daria and Quinn.” Jane
said and presented a jar filled with paint cleaner and soaking brushes to
Quinn.
“I’d like to thank the academy and of course my sister and well, top of the
world Ma.” Quinn joked causing all three of them to fall out laughing.
Part 8.
“Stuck up little tramp.” The blond haired boy said as he stomped away from
Quinn’s locker.
Quinn continued switching books from her bag to her locker as Stacy approached.
“Are you all right?” Stacy asked carefully.
“Like I’m really going to put out for him just for the honor of doing his
homework.” Quinn snorted.
Stacy giggled slightly. “He asked you to do his homework!” She said in shock.
“Yep and afterwards we could go up to his room and not to worry he has
protection.” Quinn laughed.
“I don’t think they’re even trying anymore.” Stacy sighed.
“Says something about the girls in this school if that’s true.” Quinn said
sharply. “Sorry.” She added.
“It’s ok. It’s true … or it was.” Stacy shrugged.
“Hey let’s find Jen and get out of here.” Quinn groaned.
“But it’s second period.” Stacy said then smiled. “You mean skip and not to go
shopping right.”
“That’s the plan.” Quinn grinned and placed an arm around Stacy’s shoulders.
“Let’s do it.” Stacy almost cheered.
Jennifer was more than willing and within minutes the three girls were driving
away in Shaggy’s car with him at the wheel.
“So I get brownie points for this right?” He asked.
“Yes but I’m still watching you. Consider yourself on probation.” Jennifer
grinned. “And checking out Quinn’s butt when she was tying her shoe cost you a
point.”
“C’mon I mean I’m still a guy.” He defended.
“And it’s a good butt so you only lost 1 point.” Jennifer shrugged.
“Good it’s the best butt in the school.” Stacy laughed.
“Ya right. That’s why I haven’t had a single real date offer since I came
here.” Quinn responded harshly.
Shaggy slowed the car and pulled into the park before parking.
“Jennifer I need two minutes of you being deaf.” He said seriously.
“Ok.” She smirked.
“Quinn I have the hots for Jen but if I didn’t then I would be all over you.
You are the hottest girl in the freshman class. You want date offers then wear
something besides loose jeans and baggy t-shirts.” He said quickly.
“Daria doesn’t have to do anything like that to get dates.” Quinn sighed.
“She dates geeks and I’m pretty sure that skirt isn’t functional.” Shaggy
countered.
“I’d date a geek or a nerd or anything right now.” Quinn replied.
“I’m kinda of lonely.” Stacy joked.
“Give me another week and you’re on.” Quinn laughed.
“Cool. At least I know I won’t have to put up with you having roaming hands.”
Stacy joked.
“I don’t know you’re pretty hot in that top.” Quinn said then reached over and
pinched Stacy on the side.
“I’m not that kind of girl, you have to buy me dinner first AND a movie.” Stacy
declared.
“Ok if I can get my hands on a camera we could make a mint selling the film of
you two.” Shaggy joked.
“Your two minutes are up now.” Jennifer said sternly.
“Cool.” He agreed.
“Don’t you have any friends that don’t spend all their time high?” Quinn asked
leaning forward.
“Ummm no.” He answered.
“Keep your datebook open Stacy.” Quinn groaned loudly as she dropped back
against the seat.
“I can’t believe you ditched me for a ride in that geeky car.” Jane teased.
“It’s just an electric car, it’s better than my car.” Daria said pointing out
her lack of transportation.
“Fine be all accurate and everything.” Jane grumbled.
“Besides he wanted to ask me out so I think I’ll give him a chance. He isn’t as
bad as some of the others and his Warrior is level 70 and he can get me in some
of his guild’s raids.” Daria shrugged.
“You really are geeky.” Jane smirked.
“Believe it. Oh by the way I corrected your math homework while you’ve been
trashing me.” Daria said handing over the sheet of paper.
“I love you.” Jane said happily.
“Talk to Quinn if you want some girl love. I’m straight.” Daria joked.
“Quinn’s gay!” Jane exclaimed quietly.
Daria thought for a minute. “I don’t know, I was kidding.” She answered.
“Oh. You had me for a minute.” Jane chuckled.
“We still on for tonight?” Daria asked.
“Free food and entertainment, you know I’m there.” Jane grinned.
“Cool, Quinn is inviting Stacy and Jennifer and maybe that stoner that hangs around
them all the time.” Daria informed her.
“I call a couch seat.” Jane shrugged.
“My aunt Rita should be gone by the time we get off school so there should be
plenty of room.” Daria replied.
“How’d that go?” Jane mused.
“She feels guilty for starting the whole mess where we found out and I’m
expecting some guilt gifts that we’ll accept only to make her feel better.”
Daria grinned evilly.
“I’m sure.” Jane laughed.
“Uh oh. Brain dead alert.” Daria nodded toward the approaching Kevin and
Brittany.
“Is it too late to run for it?” Jane sighed.
“Yes, just bite down on the pill on your third tooth and in ten seconds you’ll
be dead.” Daria advised.
“I thought that was candy. I ate it.” Jane said in mock horror.
“Too bad, good bye cruel world.” Daria said and pretended to bite down.
“Wait don’t leave me. Here I’ll kiss you and get some of the poison.” Jane
joked.
“GIRL KISS.” Kevin cried out.
“See what you’ve done.” Daria complained.
“Great as if it wasn’t already hard enough to meet a guy.” Jane moaned in
disgust.
“I can set you up with Goat.” Daria offered.
“I don’t date geeks.” Jane stated.
“So are you going to kiss?” Kevin asked as Brittany glared at him.
“We’re too tired now. You should have been here earlier before we got dressed.”
Jane answered.
“Really!” Kevin exclaimed.
“No not really. How can you date someone this stupid?” Daria asked Brittany.
“When he like kisses me, my toes melt.” Brittany shrugged as she answered in
her squeaky voice.
“You know it babe.” Kevin puffed up.
Daria and Jane stood dumb founded as they watched the two walk away.
“Well Damn.” Jane exclaimed in surprise.
“…” Was all Daria could manage.
Daria and Jane arrived home just in time to see her mother walking out to the
car.
“Hey Mom, what’s up?” Daria greeted.
“Your sister is in jail and I’m going to get her out.” Amy answered.
“What?” Daria gasped.
“No clue yet but I’m sure you’ll hear the loud screaming after we get home.”
Amy joked.
“I’ll borrow some ear muffs from dad.” Daria shrugged.
“I have to go. Dinner has another 30 minutes to go. Please keep an eye on it.
You know we don’t want your father in the kitchen.” Amy sighed.
“Got it.” Daria replied quickly.
Amy got into the car and quickly pulled out of the driveway and headed down the
street.
“So two forms of entertainment tonight.” Jane joked.
“As long as she’s ok.” Daria said nervously.
“Right. If it’s bad then hands off.” Jane agreed.
“Unless it’s really funny.” Daria shrugged.
Daria mothered the dinner while Jane prepared for their night of movies and
both greeted Jake when he arrived.
“Hi Dad. Did mom call you?” Daria asked.
“Yes and I’m supposed to remain calm.” Jake sighed.
“Here have a beer.” Jane said placing an opened beer in front of him.
“Thank you Jane.” He said with a smile.
“No problem.” Jane answered looking relieved that he didn’t notice the drink
missing from the bottle.
“Your daughter and her friends are right over here.” The officer said and led
her to a row of chairs where the three girls now sat looking panicked.
“What are the charges?” Amy sighed her heart breaking as she saw how scared the
girls were.
“None. We just needed an adult to pick them up. The driver of the car got
picked up for an illegal U-turn and possession.” The officers responded. “He
admitted the stash was his so nothing to charge them with. Having a stupid
friend isn’t a crime.”
“Do I need to sign anything?” Amy let out the breath she had been holding.
“Over here.” He pointed to his desk.
On the ride home Stacy looked miserable and Jennifer cried quietly.
“Dewey’s parents were on the way to bail him out when we left. I’m sure he’s
going to be ok.” Amy assured the girl.
“They just got back together.” Quinn informed her mother who nodded.
“So skipping school and riding around town in a car loaded with pot. Quinn.”
Amy shook her head stunned.
“It was just a little pot.” Quinn shrank down.
“How much?” Amy asked.
“Three joints and a couple of pipe loads.” Jennifer answered.
“That’s it? They implied it was a big bust. I was thinking a couple of bales in
the trunk.” Amy sighed.
“Is my Mom mad?” Stacy asked weakly.
“She’s not happy and she’s going to pick you up at our house later.” Amy
replied. “I don’t think she’s ready to ship you off to military school yet.”
“Dewey was really sorry and he doesn’t smoke around me at all. He’s just a
goof.” Quinn tried.
“I’m not quite prepared to toss him to the wolves yet so relax.” Amy said
strongly.
“So I can still hang out with my friends?” Quinn tried.
“Yes but no more car rides until further notice.” Amy relented.
“Daria is going to rag on me for a week over this.” Quinn groaned.
“More like a month.” Amy smiled.
“Ok girls. Dinner should be ready when we get to the house so we’ll have dinner
and wait for parents to start arriving.” Amy announced.
“My parents are coming?” Jennifer said surprised.
“After work.” Amy responded.
“Can I just make a run for it?” Jennifer groaned.
“No But since Dewey admitted to the police it was his most of us are more upset
about the skipping school.” Amy smirked.
“How long am I grounded?” Quinn sighed.
“You aren’t. This jumps right past grounding into the, I need to think about
punishment category.” Amy sighed.
Quinn sighed. “Ok.”
Part 9
“Please Mom anything but this.” Quinn begged as she was driven to begin her
punishment.
“You aren’t in the contest but you are manning the charity booth.” Amy sighed.
“You promise.” Quinn said nervously.
“I swear. I would never make you do anything like that if you didn’t want to.”
Amy said having to fight the urge to turn the car around.
The first sign came into view as they turned into the mall parking lot.
“Lawndale beauty pageant!”
“Stacy has to work the booth to and Jennifer is mucking a horse barn.” Amy
sighed.
“I’ll trade for the horses.” Quinn said quickly.
“Just head over to the booth and find Mr. Dewitt-Clinton. He’s in charge of the
teen volunteers.” Amy sighed as she came to a stop in front of the doors of the
mall.
“You aren’t going in?” Quinn said surprised.
“No. I’m trusting you … and I’ll get a call if you don’t sign in. Then the
punishments will get creative.” Amy promised.
“How long do I have to do this?” Quinn groaned.
“You skipped 7 hours of school so you owe 7 hours.” Amy answered flatly.
Quinn hung her head and climbed out of the car.
“If you need to get picked up before 5 give me a call.” Amy smiled at her
daughter.
“I will.” Quinn sighed.
Quinn walked inside the mall and took a deep breath as she spotted the sign marked
for a local homeless shelter. She changed her course and walked toward the
booth and saw several teenagers handing out pamphlets and selling t-shirts and
snacks. Stacy was there looking cheerful as she handed over a soda and popcorn
to a customer.
“Hi Quinn!” Stacy greeted her happily.
“Hey.” Quinn answered.
“It’s not that bad.” Stacy smirked. “And we can see the show.”
“Where’s Mr. Clinton. I’m supposed to sign in with him.” Quinn sighed and
looked for an adult.
“Right here. I’ve been waiting for you.” A teenage boy said with a smile.
“You’re Quinn Morgendorffer?” He asked.
“Yes.” Quinn replied looking confused.
“Ok, just sign here and since you two know each other I think it would be ok
for Stacy to show you the ropes.” He said kindly. “I’m Ted and if you have any
questions just ask.”
“Sure.” Quinn said in surprise.
“Ok, great to have you aboard.” Ted smiled.
He walked to the other side of the booth then Quinn turned to Stacy who just
shrugged. “He’s the boss.”
“It seems that way.” Stacy replied.
Quinn looked at the shorter boy and smiled. :He’s ok in a really weird kind
of way.:
Stacy let Quinn into the booth and started showing her what was expected.
Jane continued to interrogate Daria.
“C’mon it’s Trent’s birthday and your mother was really interested in what he
likes. Is there a party?” Jane pushed.
“I have no idea. Maybe you should try to trick my dad and see if he knows
anything.” Daria shrugged with a grin.
“Spill it or Trent might be busy tomorrow.” Jane threatened.
“I guess that is his choice.” Daria replied, the grin turning into a wolf’s
smile.
“Damn you Daria.” Jane pouted.
“You want to go do something or are you going to keep harassing me?” Daria
sighed.
“Harass.” Jane countered.
“Fine, I’m going to play Battlefield 2. Let me know when you’re bored.” Daria
replied.
“You have to tell me.” Jane said firmly.
Daria booted up her pc and started the game. Within seconds she was hunting
down computer enemies as Jane continued to rant.
“Please.” Jane said weakly.
Daria sighed and closed out her game and turned to see Jane’s face.
“Ok either you’re really good or this means something to you that I’m missing.”
Daria said stunned.
“Trent’s last birthday we spent the entire day stacking boxes of fruit to make some
extra cash because the parents had forgotten to send anything for food for a
few months. I couldn’t even get him a cake let alone a gift and it may be
selfish but he deserves a nice birthday and I know your mom is planning
something.” Jane admitted and Daria realized she was being serious.
Daria sighed and took pity on her friend. “Yes she is and we’re not telling you
what.”
“Why not?” Jane demanded.
“Because you can’t keep a secret.” Daria laughed.
“But it’s nice right?” Jane pushed.
“Yes it’s nice.” Daria sighed. “Now can we go do something?”
“Sure … thanks.” Jane finished sounding relieved.
Quinn and Stacy sat at one of the tables in the food court.
“This isn’t so bad.” Stacy said. “We get to hang out and talk and best of all
no Sandi.”
“I know. I just have a problem with girls being involved in something that only
really focuses on the physical aspects.” Quinn sighed.
“You’d so win if you were up there.” Stacy smiled.
“Don’t even go there.” Quinn groaned.
They didn’t notice Ted walking up. “Can I join you ladies?” He asked.
“Sure.” Quinn said and he quickly took a seat.
“So how are you two doing today?” He asked politely as he began to eat.
“Good.” Stacy answered at once and Quinn noticed an evil glint in her friend’s
eye.
“Ya.” Quinn replied.
“That’s great. We can always use some more help in helping others.” Ted
grinned.
“Quinn likes helping people but she prefers it on a smaller scale.” Stacy
stated casually.
“Nothing wrong with trying to save the world one person at a time.” Ted nodded.
Quinn noticed the bag lunch he was eating out of and tried to change the topic.
“What are you eating?” She asked.
“It’s a vegetable sandwich. I like it when the potato slices are really
crunchy.” Ted answered.
“You want a hamburger?” Quinn offered.
“NO! You don’t know what they might be putting in the meat in a place like
this.” He shuddered.
Stacy slowly swallowed a bit of hers and looked down at the rest of it. Quinn
just chuckled.
“You’ve already eaten some of it so I’m pretty sure it won’t kill you.” Quinn
laughed before taking a monster bite out of hers.
“Besides if you don’t expose yourself to the germs and everything else you
can’t build up any tolerances to them.” Quinn continued after chewing and
swallowing the bite.
“I guess that’s true.” Ted nodded.
“You two seem to be having so much to talk about, I’ll go check on the booth.”
Stacy said evilly and walked off shooting a smirk at Quinn over her shoulder.
“I’ll kill her.” Quinn mumbled.
“That’s funny, I mean you don’t really plan on killing her but instead you’re
using it to express displeasure with her.” Ted laughed.
“Right.” Quinn said taken back.
“What did she do?” Ted asked.
“She’s trying to do something and is being rather obvious about it.” Quinn sighed.
“What?” Ted asked.
“You don’t get out much do you?” Quinn smirked.
“No just to events like this. I’ve almost got my parents talked into letting me
go to a real school instead of being home schooled.” Ted informed her.
“That explains so much.” Quinn muttered.
“So what did Stacy do?” Ted asked.
“Nothing.” Quinn sighed again.
“Well I’ve got to get back to work. It was nice talking with you, maybe we
could do it again some time.” He said nicely.
“Sure.” Quinn answered.
Quinn worked the rest of the day trying to pretend to be angry with Stacy but
couldn’t manage to keep it focused for long. At five she headed out to meet her
mother by the doors with Stacy and found both their mothers waiting outside for
them.
“See you at school Quinn.” Stacy smiled as she got into her mother’s car.
“See you then.” Quinn responded.
“Hey Quinn wait up.” Ted called as she moved to get into the car.
“What?” She asked tiredly.
“You forgot to sign out. Here.” He said handing her a slip of paper that she had
filled out in the morning. After she signed it, he did as well and handed a
yellow copy over to her mother before stepping back then smiling.
“It was really nice working with you Quinn.” He said.
“You’re a great boss.” She smiled back.
“I was wondering if you wanted to go to the library next weekend.” Ted asked.
“What’s happening at the library, a fundraiser or something?” Quinn asked.
“No, no just to go there.” Ted asked.
“You mean like a date?” Quinn said surprised.
“Well yes I guess I do.” Ted grinned.
“Ummm sure.” Quinn answered.
“That’s great. I have your number on the form and I’ll call you to make
arrangements and to confirm it’s ok with your parents.” He replied.
Quinn got into the car and closed the door waving to him as her mother pulled
away laughing.
“Quinn’s got a boyfriend.” Amy sang teasingly.
“Shut up.” Quinn answered but she couldn’t help smiling.
Quinn allowed the furious teasing from her mother and sister throughout dinner
and even allowed Jane to fire a few unreturned shots, Trent seemed to
understand.
:Must be the whole big brother thing.: Quinn thought as her mother went
to answer the front door.
“I think it’s great that Quinn met a guy.” Jake said.
“It’s about time, people were starting to talk.” Daria teased.
“And people were starting to believe it.” Jane added.
“DAMN IT.” They heard Amy shout from the living room. Everyone ran into the
room to see what was wrong.
“Amy.” Jake said beating the girls into the room.
“She’s suing us.” Amy answered and handed over the paperwork in her hand over
to her husband.
“Who?” Daria asked but she knew the answer.
“Denial of visitation. When did she ask to see the girls?” Jake demanded as he
read the paperwork.
“Never.” Amy barked then realizing the girls were in the room started trying to
calm herself.
“We don’t have to see her do we?” Quinn asked.
“I guess that depends on what the judge says.” Jake sighed.
“I don’t want anything to do with her.” Daria stated.
“Well it’s a few weeks away so I’ll have a lawyer take a look at these and see
what can be done.” Jake replied and Amy nodded.
Jane and Trent bailed out shortly afterwards but only after Jane agreed to have
Trent up and back over as early as possible in the morning.
“Why is she doing this?” Jake groaned.
“I guess we’ll find out but I think we need to counter sue. Child support,
everything.” Amy said looking ready to hit someone.
“Won’t that make it worse?” Jake sighed.
“Maybe but I’m tired of her thinking she didn’t do anything wrong.” Amy responded.
“I think Mom’s right.” Daria added.
“As long as I don’t have to see her.” Quinn shrugged.
“It says here that all parties must attend the hearing.” Daria said looking
over the legal paperwork.
“I guess we get to meet her.” Daria groaned.
“Damn.” Quinn groaned sadly.
Part 10
Daria sat in the backseat of the car fuming as Ted returned the girls to their
home.
“I’m really sorry Daria.” Ted said meekishly.
“Sorry. You punched my date in the face.” Daria growled.
“I thought he was getting out of line. He was trying to take your shirt off.”
Ted tried to defend himself.
“Which I would have been fine with but if fact his braces were stuck to my
shirt and we were trying to get them off.” Daria sighed.
“I thought he was trying to take your virtue.” Ted replied.
“I wish. Look Ted you’re a nice guy but please don’t push your views on me. I
was on a date with a nice guy and things were progressing in the direction I
wanted them to go.” Daria countered.
“Oh.” Ted said weakly.
“I thought it was really sweet how you went to protect her like that.” Quinn
offered him.
“Thanks.” Ted sighed.
“Look Ted maybe a double date was a bad idea. Maybe you two aren’t ready for
makeout dates.” Daria mused.
“Shut up Daria.” Quinn said quickly.
“I have the upmost respect for your sister.” Ted answered.
“So why haven’t you commented on her outfit. Quinn hates dressing up but she
did it for you.” Daria said pointing out the skirt and blouse Quinn was
wearing.
“I think she looks great all the time.” Ted tried.
“Then tell her that.” Daria laughed. “Girls really like to hear that kind of
thing. Being interested in her mind is good but you can’t kiss her mind.”
“But we haven’t … I mean .” Ted stumbled and the car veered.
“Don’t you want to kiss her, it’s the first sign a girl has the date went ok.”
Daria teased.
“Stop it Daria. You don’t have to be so mean,” Quinn glared at her sister.
“A gentleman doesn’t pressure a girl before she’s ready.” Ted explained.
“I’m ready.” Quinn blurted out. “… For kissing.” She quickly added.
Daria snickered in the backseat.
Ted pulled into the driveway and Daria hopped out and pushed Quinn’s door
closed.
“You two have a nice chat.” She said before hurrying inside to change her
clothes.
Daria found her mother in the kitchen making some kind of frozen drink and
judging by the bottle next to the blender it wasn’t a slushie.
“What happened?” Amy exclaimed as she saw Daria’s blood dotted shirt.
“Sir Ted tried to defend my honor and broke my date’s nose.” Daria groaned.
“I really like him.” Amy smiled.
“I should mention my date wasn’t doing anything wrong. Just hanging around
second base and his braces got caught on my shirt. We’re trying to get him un
caught when Ted and Quinn walked over.” Daria sighed.
“And Ted assumed the worst and slugged him.” Amy grinned.
“Don’t smile, this guy was nice and not half as nerdy as most of my dates.”
Daria pouted.
The sound of the front door closing turned their heads to a glowing Quinn
floating by in a daze.
“Seems one of my daughters had a good time.” Amy smirked.
“Yes it was wonderful. Thanks for talking to him Daria.” Quinn grinned and her
smeared lipstick was even more visible.
“No problem.” Daria grinned earning herself a glare from her mother.
“He kisses really well.” Quinn sighed as she headed down the hall to their
room.
“Oh thank god she was talking about kissing.” Amy sighed as she dropped into
chair.
“She isn’t ready for anything past that yet.” Daria shrugged.
“Well don’t encourage her. Let things develop on their own.” Amy said sternly.
“I’m not trying to pimp her out for god’s sake.” Daria groaned.
“I know.” Amy chuckled.
“We still have to go to court tomorrow?” Daria asked hopefully.
“Yes so wear something presentable. I don’t want the judge to think you walk
around in rags.” Amy said strongly.
“Just when I go out panhandling.” Daria countered.
“The ice is cracking.” Amy warned.
“I can swim.” Daria smirked before hugging her mother and heading to bed.
They arrived at the court house minutes before the hearing but found the
correct court room without any delays.
The bailiff showed them inside and the family gathered on the left side of the
room and took seats at the table and began waiting.
Daria looked around and stared at the room trying to determine just how much
her life was going to change by what would be occurring within it.
:I don’t care what anyone says I know who my mother is.: She thought
angrily. She reached over and grabbed Amy’s hand and squeezed it briefly.
The rear doors they had entered opened again and a woman walked in. She had
shoulder length hair and wore a skirt business suit and carried a briefcase.
Her outfit and earrings clearly cost more than everything the family was
wearing.
:So that’s the woman who gave birth to me and Quinn. I’m not impressed.: A
growl went through her mind as Daria inspected her.
“Stuck up bitch.” Quinn spat out softly.
“Quinn!” Amy whispered.
“Did you see the way she looked at Dad? She does it again I’m going to smack
her.” Quinn replied.
“Just calm down.” Amy said forcefully still speaking in a low tone.
“All rise.” A bailiff called out and the family stood as one.
The judge entered and called for them to sit.
“Helen Morgendorffer vs Jake and Amy Morgendorffer is called to order.” The
bailiff stated firmly.
“Ok it looks like we have a custody dispute. Is that correct?” The judge asked.
“Yes your honor. My ex-husband and his wife are refusing to allow me contact
with my children.” Helen said never looking over at them.
“She never asked to see them!” Jake exclaimed.
“I have evidence that they have denied me any parental rights.” Helen stated
with a tight smile.
“How could we deny her something she never requested.” Jake groaned loudly.
“Please explain yourself.” The judge ordered.
“My sister has never once requested to see or speak with the girls. The only
contact we’ve had with her are these letters.” Amy said calmly holding up a
stack of paper.
“I have made repeated attempts to visit or open up lines of communication with
my daughters but they have been rebuffed by my ex and my sister.” Helen
replied.
The judge sent the bailiff out to collect the various evidence both women seem
to have and quickly started going through it.
“Mrs. Morgendorffer I’m curious about one thing.” The judge started.
“Yes.” Amy and Helen both answered.
“The first Mrs. Morgendorffer.” The judge said pointing toward Helen.
“Yes.” Helen said glaring at Amy.
“I see the girls are teenagers. Why is this just now coming to court?” He
asked.
“I didn’t always know where they were. I also had to deal with some emotional
issues after being betrayed by my own sister who plotted to steal my husband
and children.” Helen answered.
“What?” Jake gasped.
“That’s a lie.” Quinn burst out.
“Little Quinn. You were just a baby when they took you away from me.” Helen
said and Daria searched the woman’s face for anything that looked like a real
emotion and came up empty.
“You mean when you left me. Well I have a Mom and I don’t need you.” Quinn
replied harshly.
“I was forced to leave.” Helen answered.
“That’s enough. You want counseling then go somewhere else. We’re here to
address custody and visitation.” The judge said banging his gavel several
times.
“No thank you.” Daria said standing up. “We don’t want anything to do with
her.”
“Daria, Quinn sit down please.” Amy said nervously.
“I see there is a joint custody agreement with residential custody going to the
father. I can’t put any weight into the claim it took 15 years or so to file a
case of denial of visitation but I can make sure any future requests are
answered correctly.” The judge stated calmly.
“Don’t we have a say in this?” Daria said standing back up.
“Certainly. If your parents want to get a lawyer and file to have the custody
order changed then a court can address that. This hearing is simply dealing
with denial and it looks like a lack of any child support payments.” The judge
paused and looked at Helen.
“It has never been requested.” Helen almost smirked.
“It has now. $350 a month per child. That puts you owing 126 thousand dollars
in back support. How would you like to arrange payment.” The judge asked.
“Will a check do?” Helen responded coldly.
“Certainly. Now as this is new to the girls I’m going to insist visitations be
allow but the father can restrict overnight or out of town visits.” The judge
smiled.
“Anything else.” He asked. “Good.”
Daria sat numb and watch the judge walk out of the room.
:This isn’t right.: Was all she could think.
“I’m not doing it.” Quinn declared. “He can say whatever he wants but they
can’t make me put up with her.”
“Yes they can sweetie.” Amy sighed.
“Let’s just go home.” Jake sighed trying not to look over at his ex-wife.
“Jake, Amy I was wondering if I could give the girls a ride to your house where
we can make arrangements for my first visits.” Helen said in a sickly sweet
voice.
“No.” Jake answered. “If you want to discuss that then I guess you know where
we live. The girls are riding home with us.”
“Fine. Let me go pay my child support.” Helen said with a quick wave of the
child support order from the judge as she headed out of the courtroom.
“I’m really starting to dislike her.” Daria deadpanned.
“Amen.” Amy agreed as the two of them watched the woman walk away.
Part 11.
The car ride home was quiet and Quinn could see Daria appeared to be fuming
almost as much as she felt. Jake and Any didn’t say much, they just shook their
heads as if they had something to say then lost track of it.
:She left us and now she stands up and lies about my Mom and Dad then we
have to play nice. Not me she can shove it.: Quinn thought bitterly.
“Girls I don’t like this anymore than you do. If Helen had wanted to be part of
your lives then we wouldn’t have stopped her.” Amy started and Quinn had to
smile at the way every word was cut off sharply.
“For her to come back now and pretend it wasn’t her choice is …” Amy continued
and Quinn hoped for the infamous Barksdale temper to flare but her mother
squashed it down with a sigh.
“I’m not being nice.” Daria stated without doubt.
“Judge didn’t say you had to be.” Jake answered making Amy groaned.
“So I can call her a self righteous bit..” Quinn started.
“Quinn!” Amy exclaimed.
“Yes you can but don’t let your mother hear you using that kind on language.”
Jake said with amusement.
“You aren’t helping.” Amy glared at him.
“Not trying to sweetie.” Jake replied and reached over and grabbed his wife’s
hand.
“It’s going to be hard but we just have to try to get through this. Knowing
Helen this is all temporary. In a few days or weeks she’ll lose interest and we
can go back to our lives.” Amy offered her daughters.
“With a hundred grand.” Jake added.
“That’s going to come in handy for the new baby.” Daria agreed.
“Maybe it might be best to hold off on that.” Amy responded sadly.
“No!” Quinn gasped.
“But I got a book on knitting.” Daria replied. “I’m going to make blankets and
hats for it.”
“…” Amy failed to be able to come up with a response.
“What?” Daria demanded. “I can’t have maternal instincts because I’m a geek.”
“Told you.” Jake smirked happily.
The family arrived home and quickly entered the house and began their waiting.
A question occurred to Quinn and she decided to ask it just to fill the
silence. “Why didn’t she just give us the money?”
“When we filed for child support we gave them our bank account information and
it will be direct deposited after the check clears.” Jake answered. “It’s to
make sure she doesn’t stop payment on the check.”
“Oh.” Quinn nodded that she understood.
Amy moved into the kitchen and started making lunch with Daria’s help. She took
the time to access her daughter’s mood.
“So what are you planning?” Amy sighed when she realized why her eldest wasn’t
throwing things yet.
“I’m going to be polite but distance. Respectful but honest right up until she
lies about you or Dad again then I’m going break her jaw and while we’re
waiting for the police I’m going to destroy her credit, cancel her life
insurance and suspend her driver license.” Daria answered coldly.
“Oh.” Amy replied slightly shocked.
“Then if I have time I’m going to list her home number and address on every
“For a good time site” and wish her well.” Daria smirked evilly.
“Can you at least entertain the idea that maybe she has realized her mistake
and wants to make up for them.” Amy sighed.
“Not if she insists on lying.” Daria countered.
“Fair enough.” Amy agreed.
“Now lets talk about baby names.” Daria smiled.
“No, not until we find out I am.” Amy warded her daughter away with a cross
sign.
“Ok.” Daria laughed.
The family ate in the living room as they pretended to watch a movie until the
knock they knew was coming arrived.
“I’ll get it.” Daria groaned.
“Can’t we just move to another state?” Quinn sighed sadly as her sister walked
toward the door.
“I don’t think it’ll work.” Amy said and hugged the young girl.
Daria wiped the smile off her face as she opened the door. The woman was there
looking smug in her thousand dollar suit and earrings.
“Hello Daria.” Helen said nicely.
“Helen right? Hi.” Daria responded flatly.
“Can I come in?” Helen smiled.
“Unless I can convince you to leave us alone.” Daria replied as she stepped out
of the way and held the door open.
“I’m sure you’ve heard some horror stories about me but I think you’ll fine
they were biased.” Helen never let the smile wavier.
“Didn’t even know you existed until a few weeks ago.” Daria countered.
Amy moved toward them and greeted her sister. “Helen, I see you found the house
ok.”
“Yes. The directions were perfect.” Helen replied. “Hello Jake.”
“Hey.” Jake stated in response and Daria noticed his hands shaking.
The group moved into the living room and took seats with Quinn and Daria both
choosing to sit next to Amy. An act that wasn’t missed by Helen who seemed to
be preparing for a speech.
:It’s a test of wills.: Daria thought. :She’s waiting for someone
else to break. Quinn’s already shuffling in her seat.:
Quinn noticed her sister staring at her and got the message quickly enough. No
one spoke for almost 15 minutes.
“Well isn’t this nice.” Helen broke first and Daria had to fight the urge to
jump up and do a victory dance but it wasn’t a tough battle.
“I think it might be easier if you just tell us what you want?” Amy sighed.
“Can’t I just want to see my daughters and be part of their lives?” Helen
countered.
“How about the real answer and maybe this won’t be hellish … or not as
hellish.” Daria deadpanned.
“Alright I expect to be under intense scrutiny over the next year and I’m sure
they will want to look into my ex-husband and children.” Helen answered and
Daria still heard the lie of omission buried in her words.
“You’re running for office.” Amy understood.
“Yes. It doesn’t change the fact that I do want some kind of relationship with
MY daughters. But to cut to the chase. So I did pay the back support and I will
fund college funds for both girls and pay my child support every month. Also I
will be coming by once a week and visiting the girls, spending time together,
shopping just getting to know each other.” Helen declared.
“We have no reason to stop you from doing that.” Jake looked almost relieved.
“That means spending time with you two.” Helen said coldly.
“I think we can behave. I know I would love the chance to rebuild bridges with
you.” Amy nodded.
“I guess that depends on how honest you plan on being.” Helen smiled even
colder.
“The girls know how things happened. I have no problem admitting I had feelings
for Jake before you left but I only acted on them after you left.” Amy replied
and Daria covered a smirk with her hand.
“Oh really.” Helen replied.
“We didn’t even kiss until months after you left.” Jake added.
“I’m touched.” Helen almost laughed.
“I won’t let you use the girls in some kind of political chess game.” Jake
continued.
“No comment is my answer of choice from any of you. I’ll simply say that the
girls deserve a private life.” Helen’s answer was clearly thought of ahead of
time.
“The judge said we had to visit with you but don’t expect us to be happy about
it.” Daria butted into the conversation.
“You bailed on us. I can’t wait for someone to ask me about you.” Quinn smirked
evilly.
“That’s your right. It would be shame though if your friend got into trouble
again with the law. I’ll bet he has pot on him right now. And we wouldn’t want
the authorities to find out about the kids next door, staying there with almost
no parental guidance.” Helen placed them in check smoothly.
“You’d go after Jane if we don’t play ball.” Daria stated surprised.
“We won’t say anything but you just killed any chance of having a real
relationship with me.” Quinn stated. :Not that you had one to start with but
I can’t do that to Dewey and Jane.:
“I think we can overcome any obstacles and become a family.” Helen smiled
sweetly.
“Threats are a poor way to do that.” Amy fumed.
:Enjoy it Helen because I don’t lose.: Daria thought as she stared down
the older woman.
Part 12
Jane and Trent went directly into the backyard of the Morgendorffer home and as
Trent started up the grill, Jane dumped bags of ice into the waiting coolers.
“Hey Jane.” Daria said looking miserable as she joined them a few minutes
later. She came out of the house carrying several cases of soda and together
they deposited them on top of the ice.
“Damn you look like someone stole your favorite toy. Did the internet go down?”
“Worse. Jennifer called Quinn while Helen was still here and my sister let it slip
that the
barbeque was still on for today. She’s coming.”
“Can I insult her repeatedly?”
“Janey behave.” Trent said from behind them as he continued stacking up
charcoal before turning back to the grill.
“Don’t give her a hard time. Trust me on this one.”
“No problem Amiga.” Jane said with two fingers raised.
Quinn stomped outside looking furious. “Helen just called and asked that we
make sure there isn’t any underage drinking or pot smoking today.”
“Damn it, I was planning on getting drunk and showing off my new stripping
routine.” Jane joked.
“Wait you’re serious. Is she crazed?”
“Don’t expect to have too much fun today.” Daria said.
“Please tell me you managed to dig up some kind of dirt on her.” Quinn pleaded.
“Nothing. She’s completely clean or she hired some good hackers to wipe any
trace of dirt off of the net.”
“Quinn your friends are here.” Jake called from the back door.
“Thanks Dad.”
Quinn quickly left to show her friends that would certainly consist of
Jennifer, Stacy and Dewey to the backyard. Amy exited the door almost as soon
as Quinn entered it. Jane moved to help her with the load of hamburgers she was
carrying with a speed that was impressive.
“Thank you Jane.”
“No problem Mrs. M.”
“You can call me Amy.”
“Um sure I’ll start that just as soon as I want Daria’s head to explode.”
Quinn returned with her friends and with the single addition of a redhead
wearing an Egyptian ankh on her neck the group was as predicted. Dewey moved
toward Trent and offered to help only to find there wasn’t anything to be done
at the moment.
“Daria go help your father before he kills himself or the stereo.”
“I’m on it.”
“This is so great. Sandi would never let us just hang out and have some fun.
Everything was about being popular and looking good.” Stacy said.
“And that’s why she’s a royal bitch.” Jennifer snickered as the two took seats
at an old picnic table.
“This is going to be great.” Stacy repeated then leaned forward and whispered.
“Ted is coming right. Quinn really looks like she needs cheering up.”
“I called him last night and advised him it would be a bad thing for him to
miss today.”
“So Quinn, how are you holding up?” Was tossed out when the two girls saw Quinn
approaching.
“I’ll live but if anyone knows a hitman and wants to know what to get me for my
birthday.”
“She’s here.” Daria said as she carried out a speaker carefully unwrapping the
cable as she walked.
“Oh good.” Amy groaned.
“Say the word and I’ll try to talk Max into running her over with the Tank.”
“Don’t tempt me Jane.”
The tension in the backyard quickly rose until it was almost thick enough to
cut with a knife as Jake looking miserable showed his ex-wife out into the
backyard. Neither Quinn or Daria moved to greet her but Amy swallowed her pride
and forced a smile on her face.
“I’m glad you decided to come.”
“Thank you Amy. I see the girls have some friends over.”
“Yes.”
“Trent Lane. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He said as the pair approached the
grill. Helen took his hand respectfully and allowed him to shake hers politely.
“Well it’s very nice to know that the girls have someone next door to look
after them if Amy and Jake ever need it.”
“Mostly it’s them helping out with Janey.”
“That’s good too, I think.”
Quinn perked up at once when Ted entered the backyard with a covered dish in
one hand and flowers in the other.
“Who’s that?”
“Ted. Her boyfriend.” Amy answered her sister’s question.
“He looks quite respectful.”
“He is.”
Amy struggled with the urge to go inside and crack open a bottle of wine or
beer.
:At this rate I don’t think Jim Beam could relax me.:
Daria found herself on beer patrol as her father was so distracted and shaken
by his ex-wife’s presence he kept forgetting where his beer was and opening
another. She pulled him inside to help with choosing the music selection and
tried to talk to him.
“Dad you got to calm down. The last thing we need is her painting a picture to
the judge that you’re some kind of lush.”
“Then it might be a good idea for you to hide the rest.”
“I can do that.”
“Daria Mom says quit hiding in the house with Dad and get your butt back out
here.” Quinn called over to them, making both sigh sadly.
Jake hit the power button and music poured into the backyard and the almost
cheerful tunes were a sharp contrast to the mood of the party guests.
Daria rejoined her mother and started helping to make plates feeling Helen’s
eyes on her intensely. She knew what was coming and she knew wishes didn’t come
true so a pinpoint meteor strike wasn’t going to occur, but the questions did?
“So Daria what are your plans?”
“Don’t have any yet.”
“Don’t you have any ideas about what you want to do after school?”
Daria wanted to run but she forced a smile on her face and bit back the retort
she wanted to say.
“I guess, maybe designing video games and I like to write. I’ve thought about
doing CGI videos.”
“That sounds interesting. I understand you’re in the top 2 percent at your
school.”
“I was sick one day and missed a test.”
“Funny. You spend a lot of time with Jane and her brother I see.”
“Does it count as spending time if Trent is asleep? Jane’s my best friend so we
hang out a lot.”
“Your sister seems to have quite a collection of friends. A pothead, a couple
of burnouts and that sickly sweet girl though Ted seems quite nice.” Helen
changed direction.
“That’s Quinn. Always collecting people.”
“I’m surprised that Amy is letting her associate with them after the arrest.”
“Mom figured that everyone deserves a second chance and Shaggy has been
behaving.”
“So are YOU dating anyone?”
“Food’s ready.” Amy said interrupting them and Daria almost hugged her.
Everyone squeezed onto the two picnic tables after Jane and Trent pushed them
together and started eating with only a brief pause when Ted preformed a quick
prayer. Daria noticed that Helen seemed pleased with this information.
The rest of the afternoon passed quickly until Daria and Quinn were cleaning up
the backyard with the help of Jane and Trent as the adults sat talking at the
tables.
“Well I’m hoping that House will be a stepping stone to the Senate and then who
knows.” Helen was saying looking more animated than at any time during the day.
“And having daughters you don’t know among other things could cause a scandal.”
“True but sometimes a person needs an excuse to do the right thing.”
“So you show up and drag us into court and threaten my daughter’s friends if
they don’t play nice.” Amy said dripping with venom.
“Perhaps not the best move but you can’t deny the results so far.”
Jake just snorted.
Helen just smiled.
Part 13
Quinn sat in the middle of the room and enjoyed the sights and smells of the
traditional Japanese decorated room with incense burning. She was wearing a
flimsy kimono that clung to her body like a lover. She knelt next to the small
table that was the only furniture in the room and mixed the tea as he entered.
He joined her, kneeling across from her with only their knees touching. Quinn
smiled at him before nodding as he raised his hands to her collar and gripped
the material softly.
“I love you Ted.” She whispered gently.
“And I love you Quinn.” He said then started to pull down the top of her kimono
slowly.
“HOW DARE YOU EMBARRES ME LIKE THIS!” Helen Morgendorffer said from the
doorway.
Quinn and Ted leapt to their feet as Quinn struggled to close the gown.
“What are you doing here?” Quinn said not understanding how this could be. She
held the top of the kimono closed as her faced colored red at being discovered.
“I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN YOU’D BE A TRAMP!”
“I’m 15 and you aren’t my mother so go away.”
“SHOW ME RESPECT.”
Helen’s hand flew out and Quinn found her head jerked to the side as her cheek
burned. A copper taste danced on her tongue. She raised her smaller hand and
touched her lips. Blood came back with her fingers when she pulled them away.
Another red took hold of her very being as anger boiled her blood.
“You bitch.”
“I’M YOUR MOTHER.”
“No you aren’t.” Quinn whispered.
Another slap and she was knocked backwards knocking over the tea table and
spilling the contents on the woven bamboo mats. Quinn looked around for Ted and
he seemed to be gone.
:Ok he loses some boyfriend points for running.:
“Amy is my mother.”
“She’s just a tramp like you and your sister.”
Quinn never thought to swing but her hand stung after it came into contact with
Helen’s face. She never saw the returning blow that sent her into the delicate
wall cracking it and tearing the paper. Quinn narrowed her eyes and started
toward the older woman. Suddenly Ted was there holding out a Japanese sword. He
gripped the saya as he held out the tsuka to her.
Quinn pulled the blade free and held it before herself then stepped toward Helen.
“YOU CAN’T STOP ME WITH THAT.”
“Wanna bet.” Quinn smirked and swung at a 45 degree angle feeling the blade bit
flesh and bone before clearing the body below the arm pit. She turned not
needing to see the body of the woman she would never think of as her mother
fall to the floor in two pieces.
Ted took the katana from her and cleaned the blade before returning it to its
saya and placing it gently on the floor.
“You have defeated the monster and saved your family.”
“So do I get a reward?” Quinn said evilly.
“Whatever you desire.”
“Funny you should say desire.”
Quinn pulled him tightly to her and kissed him roughly then she opened her
eyes.
“Argggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh NO!”
Quinn’s hands and feet kicked against her bed as she realized it was a dream.
“Quinn’s going to be in a mood.” Daria laughed in the kitchen as she ate
breakfast with her parents.
“It’s a stressful time for everyone. Why don’t you and Jane take her out for
some fun.” Her mother said wisely.
“Ok but what she wants is to be locked in a room with Ted for a few days. You
want I should arrange it.”
“DARIA!” Amy laughed as Jake groaned loudly.
Daria had to drag her sister out of the house once the younger girl dragged her
depressed self out of their room. They headed straight to Jane’s bedroom where
their friend waited for them, she looked almost as bad as Quinn and the woman
they hadn’t met yet in the kitchen was the clear source. Daria order an
evacuation from the premises and soon the group was wandering the streets
complaining.
“She shows up and starts in on the hippie crap with minutes.”
“At least your dreams are safe.”
“You two need to chill. Who’s up for video games?”
“NO!” Quinn and Jane both yelled.
“Ok ok so what do you two want to do?”
“…”
“Ok so at least I’m trying to come up with some ideas.”
“Let’s head to mall and see what’s happening.” Jane said, giving into the
complete and total boredom they were all feeling.
Brittany was watching Kevin try to balance a full soda cup on his nose.
:At least he’s cute.: She thought with amusement. :And can kiss.:
She sighed out loud and covered with a typical Kevin pleasing statement.
“You’re so talented Keviee.”
“She was rewarded with the sight of the drink spilling all over him as he tried
to pose for her, forgetting the drink for a moment.
She missed the laughter when she saw the small group enter the mall. It was the
unpopular girls who were more popular than most of the popular ones. She waved
at them and felt a small spike as they waved back.
“Hey babe it’s the brains.”
“Maybe we should say hi.” Brittany said.
“But babe what if someone sees us hanging out with brains?”
“They’re coming over.” Brittany said and she smiled widely. “Hi Daria, Quinn,
Jane.”
“Hi Brittany.” Daria answered first. Quinn and Jane both shrugged clearly
distracted or upset.
“I didn’t know they let brains hang out at the mall.” Kevin joined into the
conversation.
“It’s an outreach program. It gives us a chance to meet our future employees.”
Daria smirked causing Brittany to giggle.
“You’re going to own a football team WOW!” Kevin said in awe.
“No I’m going to own a gas station.” Daria laughed.
:One of these days he’s going to realize how often she insults him. Maybe in
a few years.: Brittany thought as she grinned along with Quinn and Jane.
The five of them parted after a few minutes.
“Daria you have to come up with something to get rid of Helen.” Quinn said in a
desperate tone as they walked back toward their houses.
“If you want to practice on my mother feel free.”
“I can’t do anything that might be traced back to us or she might nuke everyone
in retaliation. I’m trying to come up with something but anything that might
work would be obvious it was me.”
“Like what?” Jane asked.
“Like going to the press with Helen’s hippie days. Past drug use is still
frowned on. It would hurt and wouldn’t involve us directly but since she’s
knows how bad that getting out would be I’m betting she’s bribed anyone except
Mom and Dad who knew her back then.”
“So if it came out now then it would have had to come from here.” Quinn said
looking depressed again.
“Exactly. The only other thing I can think of is for us to get involved with a
scandal that would make her want to stay away. Quinn you think you can get Ted
to knock you up?”
“Ummm no.”
“Drugs would burn us worse than her so I’m hitting a wall. I’ll take
suggestions.”
“Cutting her in half with a katana seemed too worked pretty well.”
“Maybe that can be plan B.”
“Well since we’re home now I’m going to go paint my pain onto a canvas then try
not to smother my mother with a pillow.” Jane said pointing over to her house.
Quinn looked hopefully to Daria who sighed and answered the unspoken question.
“Plan C.”
The sisters entered their home and joined Jake and Amy in the living room as
they watched a debate on the TV. It was clear why when the camera showed Helen
questioning another candidate’s reason for refusing to support a tax bill.
The questions seemed to come from the audience and the next one hit home.
“Mrs. Morgendorffer, how do you claim to believe in family values when it’s
public knowledge you had a long drawn out child support battle with your
ex-husband that just recently was resolved?” The speaker asked reading from one
of the cards that was collected from audience.
“I can’t defend my actions and mistakes I made concerning that and I’m grateful
my ex-husband and his current wife are forgiving people and allowing me to try
to rebuild a relationship with my daughters.”
“So you’re admitting you were in the wrong.”
“In the matters concerning child support and being part of my daughters’ lives,
yes. It’s one hundred percent my fault. Sometime emotions and resentment get
the better of us.”
“So how are they taking you coming back?”
“Slowly and not without some hurdles.”
“All right the next question is concerning law enforcement policies.” The
speaker moved on glad that there was no rebuttal from the other candidates on
the topic.
“She played that perfectly. I was hoping she’d take a real hit but instead she
comes out looking like a remorseful mother trying to make amends for the past.”
Amy said looking disgusted.
“She’s slick, I’ll give her that.” Daria agreed.
Jake looked over at his daughters and could see the wheels spinning in their
collective heads and knew a storm was coming. He just didn’t know how bad of
one.
Part 14
Daria sat on the lawn of Lawndale high waiting for Jane and Quinn’s flock to
join her. She tried not to think about the events that were at the forefront of
her life. The last two weeks had been filled with dinners with Helen and offers
of shopping trips that were beginning to border on insulting. She was trying so
hard she didn’t notice the young man that sat next to her until he spoke.
“Penny for your thoughts.”
She jumped slightly in surprise before regaining control and inspecting him. A
sigh escaped her lips when she realized he was far too cute to want to talk to
her and that could only mean one thing. “Who are you working for?”
“Pardon?”
“Look it’s clear you’re either working for Helen or the press or maybe the guy
running against her so don’t try to snow me.”
“Which one gets me your number?”
Daria couldn’t help but laugh at the feeble attempt to maintain his cover.
“Ok, I work for New York Times and to be blunt your mommy dearest just became a
very serious candidate and now the gloves come off. So how about an interview?”
“On the record all I will say is that I don’t follow politics so I don’t feel
qualified to make comments concerning her stance on things.”
“What about as a mother?”
“I don’t know yet. It’s all still new now that the issues have been resolved.”
“I’m not going to get anything am I?” He rubbed his hand through his hair
looking disappointed.
“Sorry.”
He rose to his feet and brushed off his pants before offering her a slight
smile and weak statement. “I hope she’s worth it.” Then he walked toward the
parking lot not looking back.
:She’s not but everyone else she’ll hurt is.:
A few moments later she was surrounded by the chattering of Quinn and her
friends and Jane teased her about something but she didn’t understand it. All
she knew was the intense need to do something that was eating away at her.
“Earth to spacecadet.” Jane said then pushed Daria roughly.
“Lets get out of here.”
“Is something wrong?” Quinn asked.
“Yes, the press just made contact.”
“Time to go.” Jane jumped to her feet and pulled Daria to hers.
“Relax, he left already.”
“Jane’s right lets go.” Quinn said forcefully.
Daria sat up in bed that night and watched her sister sleep and tried to decide
what her course had to be. It drove her out into the night where she walked
aimlessly as her mind raged at her.
:I need help but who? Can’t go to the press or her opponent, that will lead
back to me. Damn I need a magic sword.: She thought right before the car
hit her.
Brittany Taylor shrieked as the cat ran in front of her car causing her to turn
the wheel. She locked the brakes and skidded to a stop then felt the bump as
something hit her hood. She jumped out of the car and heard the cursing as the
dark clad girl picked herself off the ground.
“Are you hurt?”
“No I always enjoy getting hit by cars.” Daria said with a loud groan. Daria
quickly checked for any injuries and besides the stack of bruises she was sure
to see in the morning, discovered she was unhurt.
“I’m so sorry. There was a cat and I turned and … I’m sorry.” Brittany said as
she started to panic. She grabbed the shorter girl and hugged her tightly.
Daria struggled to free herself.
“First I’m a girl and I don’t dance that way and second I am sore.” She
complained and Brittany released her.
“Sorry.”
“Give me a ride home and I’ll call us even.”
“That doesn’t sound right.” Brittany looked like she was thinking, a feat Daria
wouldn’t have believed if she wasn’t seeing it. She shook her head, too tired
to process what she was seeing.
“Look unless you have some way of defeating an enemy with dirt without that
enemy finding out it was you I don’t think you can do anything for me.”
Brittany straightened up her body and tilted her head slightly before answering
as Daria walked to the passenger side door. “How well would they be defended?”
“What?” Daria turned back toward Brittany, the door half open in her hand.
“When the dirt started flying, how many people would be defending them?”
“Look I shouldn’t have said anything. This isn’t high school politics. It’s
real world.” Daria said before taking a seat and feeling her body ache.
Brittany got behind the wheel and stared at her with a smirk Daria hadn’t ever
seen before.
“That should make it a lot easier.”
“Brittany.”
“Well just give me a chance to try. So who are you trying to take down?”
Daria woke up the next morning feeling better than she had in a long time,
despite the stiffness and pain she couldn’t stop smiling.
“You’re going to a dance!” Amy exclaimed after Daria made an announcement at
dinner a few days later.
Daria looked at the surprised faces of her family and Jane and nodded. “Ted is
taking Quinn so I thought I would go stag and see what happens.”
“When did you decide this?” Jane said looking shocked.
“Yesterday.”
“It’s this weekend. I can’t trick some guy into asking me out by then.” Jane
said with an evil smile.
“You two girls can go stag together and hunt down any available fellows.” Jake
said with a grin.
Amy inspected her eldest daughter and managed to keep a smile from forming on
her face.
:I don’t know what you’re planning but I know dancing is the last thing on
your mind.: She thought toward Daria.
Daria just looked stoically at her family and friend keeping Brittany’s plan
close, letting it warm her.
Part 15
Ted parked the car after dropping the three girls off in front of the school
gym. They stood in the semi-formal dresses trying to get Daria to give up the
information on what she was planning.
“Ok spill your guts. What’s the plan?” Jane demanded.
“Just stay away from the cameras tonight, you too Quinn.”
“What cameras?” Quinn said looking surprised.
Daria looked around as if she was checking for someone. “Let’s just say that
the press might get a tip about the wild Morgendorffer daughter.”
Quinn smiled and nodded her head but Jane looked worried.
“Why can’t you fill us in?”
“Because I need you to look just as shocked as everyone else.”
Ted joined them and the group started inside, heading toward the loudest noise
as Daria struggled with her nerves.
: I can do this. Who cares what anyone thinks?: She told herself as they
neared the door to the gym.
Jane opened the double doors and paused at the entrance long enough to look
over her shoulder and offer one last word before moving into the room. “I hope
you know what you’re doing.”
:Why should now be any different.: Daria thought but gave a thumbs up to
her friend.
Quinn looked like she had something to say but Daria spotted Brittany and
headed directly toward her.
“She’ll be ok.” Ted said gripping her hand with assurance.
“She better be.”
Daria moved across the edge of the dance floor until she was almost directly
across from the entrance. Brittany was waiting near the entrance to the girls
locker rooms.
“Everything is inside.” Brittany said with a nod to the door.
“Is …?” Daria started to say.
“And raring to go. Trust me.”
“I am.”
Daria entered the locker room and grabbed the pink gym bag and started to pull
out the black clothes inside. :Sorry Mom but this dress doesn’t send the
right message.: She thought as she unzipped the dress and stepped out of
it. Her underwear had to go next then she started dressing.
“How did she know my bra size for hell’s sake?”
The black lace dress came next. Skin tight and showing more skin than she would
ever be comfortable showing and the top was see through lace. :Damn she’s
really good.: Daria thought as she checked herself out in the mirror.
A knock at the door as she slipped into the heels was followed by Brittany’s
head. “Are you ready?”
“Just about.”
“Wow, you clean up really well.” Brittany smiled at her. “Stay away from my
Keviee.”
“I promise.”
“Your date is here.”
“Good, if I have to wait anymore I’d chicken out.”
“The camera crew is on the way. I arranged for someone to tell them about you
and your date making out in the bathroom before the dance. Shame on you.”
“Well I live to party.”
Quinn sighed as she leaned against Ted as they spun around the dance floor. She
caught a glance of Jane only by accident as she turned her head to whisper
something to Ted. Jane was rooted to the floor looking shocked and frightened
at the same time. Quinn heard Ted’s chest constrict before she turned to see
what Jane was staring at. Her jaw dropped.
Daria was dressed as no one would have ever believed, pressing her scantily
clad body tightly against her date as they danced passionately. The date was
dressed in an almost matching outfit that showed too much and nowhere near
enough at the same time.
“But it’s a girl!” Ted said clearly confused.
Quinn saw the camera crew eating up the scene Daria was causing and noted Mrs.
Li fuming as well. “…”
She glanced back at Jane who was still frozen in place. “Let’s get Jane to a
table.”
“Sure but should we say something about their clothes?”
“What?”
“I can see through them.” Ted whispered.
“It’s ok. Get Jane.”
“They’re kissing!”
Quinn turned and confirmed her sister was indeed kissing the black haired Asian
girl. :I’ve seen her around before. She hangs out with Josh and Dewey.:
They managed to get Jane to a table before she fell over, Quinn had to prop her
up to keep the artist from falling out of her chair.
“Daria really knows how to dance.” Jane said after a few minutes. Quinn wanted
to explain that she was sure this was just a part of Daria’s plan but the
camera crew had realized she was Daria’s sister and was switching between her
and the spectacle Daria was creating on the dance floor now that the song had
changed to a faster beat one.
“Maybe we should go?” Ted said not looking much better than Jane.
“Umm not yet.” Quinn said as Stacy and her date followed by Jennifer and Dewey
joined them looking stunned.
“You know I kind of figured her for the carpet munching crowd but what a way to
out yourself.” Jennifer said in awe.
Quinn bit back a response and just shrugged as she found herself unable to look
away from her sister dirty dancing with another girl. Jane seemed to recover a
bit and a smile started on her face before she took a drink of punch that Ted
had gotten for them. “I can’t believe she didn’t tell me.”
“Maybe she was scared to lose her friends if they found out.” Stacy said in her
normal nice and nervous way.
“I think it’s hot.” Dewey said and Stacy’s date nodded his agreement until
Jennifer pinched her boyfriend painfully. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Dewey cried from
a kneeling position.
Quinn watched Daria dragged her new friend off the floor toward the locker room
before disappearing within. A groan went off from several guys who had
abandoned their dates to watch the show.
Daria and Mai Lynn ducked out the back door onto the school grounds and paused
for a minute. Mai Lynn smiled over at her dancing partner with an evil grin.
“Was that a good enough show for tonight or you wanting to get caught skinny
dipping in the school’s pool?”
“Baby steps.” Daria answered looking flushed.
“You’re a pretty good kisser you know. If you want to get something going on
the side I’m so ok with it.”
“What?”
“Brittany didn’t tell you I had a crush on you!” The Asian girl laughed as they
started across the back quad. “That’s why I volunteered for this.”
:Great now not only do I have to go through with this part of the plan I
have to make out with a girl that LIKES me.: Daria thought as they walked
as quickly as her tired legs could carry her.
“My car is parked behind those trees. I can drop you off at home if you want to
skip act two.”
“No, we need to be seen around town to create a buzz. I need to get an angry
phone call tomorrow.”
“I think we can arrange that.” Mai Lynn smiled like a devil.
It was three in the morning when Mai Lynn dropped her off in front of her
house, Daria climbed out after another kiss. She expected her parents to be up
or at least her mother, she wasn’t disappointed. There wasn’t a ranting fit or
threats just her mother looking her up and down before issuing a short warning.
“Quinn told me. Be careful. This isn’t a game.”
“No, but I’m still going to win.” Daria said intensely.
“Is this anything we need to have a talk about?” Amy said looking more than a
little nervous.
Daria sighed before nodding. “Not yet though.”
“You don’t have to do this.”
“I know and maybe it won’t work but at least I tried something.”
“Go to bed. We can talk more in the morning. I’m sure Helen will be calling
first thing.”
Daria climbed into her bed after changing and waited for Quinn to say
something, anything.
“She’s really into you or a good actress I don’t know which.” It came after a
few minutes.
“Both. It’s an extra complication.”
“What was it like?”
“It was like kissing a guy but she isn’t as tall so my neck didn’t get cramped
and … it was … nice … and … weird.”
“So are you?” Quinn hesitated then dove right in. “Are you gay?”
“I like guys. I mean I really like guys.”
Quinn knew there was something at the end of her sister’s statement. “But?”
“I don’t know.”
“So what’s the next step?”
Daria smiled despite herself before answering. “Think Paris Hilton and the Bush
sisters all rolled into one.”
“WHAT?” Quinn said sitting upright in her bed.
“Go to sleep. You have to be surprised like everyone else.” Daria said as she
turned off her lamp.
:This isn’t going to work.: Quinn thought sadly.
:And that’s nothing compared to phase 2.: Daria thought.
Part 16
Phase 2 never had a chance to start after the reporters started camping out in
front of the house. Except for the group that was renting the Lane’s front
yard. Daria and Mai Lynn hadn’t had a chance to do anything beyond walking to
school and home with the constant chaperones for two solid weeks.
“Look you’re on TV again.” Jane laughed as the group sat around in the living
room. Jennifer and Stacy just sighed as another blurb of the two girls walking
home from school was quickly followed by another expert.
“So you’re saying that this behavior is ok?” The female reporter was asking.
“Yes. Look at how these girls are 90 percent of the time. Bookworms, shy, A+
students that are focused and dedicated. Then they go out to release some
stress and things get wild, it’s perfectly normal and honestly something to be
expected. No laws were broken and I think all the attention has more to do with
it being a same sex pairing and of course because one of the girl’s mother is
running for office.” The expert said with an air of authority.
“So are you saying it’s a case of the harder you work, the hard you play.” The
reporter said.
“Yes. They don’t go out every night and act crazy. They’re just two young girls
releasing tension and exploring their sexuality in a reasonable manner. The
press has blown their behavior way out of proportion.”
“You don’t think this might be some kind of cry for help or attention from a
young girl seeking parental love.” The reporter pounced making Daria groan.
“No and what people have forgotten is that both these girls have extra parents
involved. I believe that opinion is more political than accurate.”
Daria groaned again and fell sideways onto the couch. Mai Lynn reached over and
rubbed her back gently.
“It’s ok Daria. Maybe no one will listen to this guy.” Quinn said as she tried
not to smile.
“I just hope they don’t get bored and go away.” Jane added.
“You just like the extra cash.” Quinn said with a snort.
“Hell yes.”
“I don’t get it. We walk to school and then home and they follow us. What do
they expect us to do with people watching all the time?”
“Well if you were really a party girl then you wouldn’t care about that.” Jane
said.
Mai moved behind Daria and continued to rub her back as she continued to
complain about the conservative reporting being done. “I mean it’s like they’re
checking their facts before they do the story.”
“It’s ok. I’m sure we’ll get a chance to misbehave in front of them again.” Mai
said smiling widely.
“It was the interview that Helen did coming off as understanding. And of course
the pictures of half the students at school making out didn’t help things. I
really didn’t know we lived in the makeout capitol of the state.” Quinn said.
“So are you two going to break up?” Stacy asked.
Daria felt Mai’s hands jerk at the question and thought about her answer before
she spoke. “No. I’m not ready to give up on this plan yet.”
“We’ll find a way to really cause a scandal.” Mai said quickly.
“Uh oh.” Quinn said staring at the TV.
It showed their front yard with Helen Morgendorffer scolding the reporters.
Jane turned up the volume.
“My daughters aren’t running for anything and I think it’s shameful that they
can’t even go on a date without someone following them. If you want to camp out
in front of my house then so be it but I’ve been informed of complaints from
the various residents. If need be I will support my ex husband and his wife in
getting a restraining order to keep you away from the children.”
“How do you feel about a gay daughter?” A reporter yelled out.
“Fine, if my daughter is gay I will support her.”
“Don’t you think she is too young to make that decision?” Another voice called
out.
“I’m not even going to answer that. Now I’m going inside and when I come back
out I expect to see something other than a mob blocking the street.” Helen said
coldly.
“She’s here.” Quinn said in a spooky voice.
“I’m out.” Jennifer said as she bounced to her feet and head toward the
backdoor with Stacy and Jane following behind her.
“Chickens.” Quinn grumbled.
Mai Lynn continued to rub Daria’s shoulders from behind as the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it.” Quinn sighed as if in pain.
She moved to the front door and opened it, stepping to the side as Helen
entered and walked into the living room. Daria didn’t say anything as Helen
took a seat.
“You must be Mai or do you prefer Lynn?” Helen said in a sickly sweet voice.
“Either … or both.” Mai answered nervously.
“I’m Helen. Now my daughter and I are going to have a talk and she’s going to
ask Quinn to go to the back for it but I’m not sure wither or not she wants you
here. Daria?”
Quinn caught the nod from her sister and started back to their room.
“I’ll stay.” Mai said weakly.
Helen nodded then stared at her hands for a few seconds before lifting her
head. “I’m not going anywhere, even if I lose this election I’ll still be
around. You need to get it through your head that I’m your mother. I know Amy
deserves the title more than I do and I understand why but I’m not going
anywhere.”
“I don’t know what you mean.” Daria said without missing a beat.
“I don’t care if you two are dating or if this is a scam to create a scandal.
You can do anything and I’ll still be here the next weekend to see you. Have I
tried to make you or your sister do anything then spend some time together with
me?”
“No.”
“Then at least give me some credit. I apologize for my behavior and the threats
before but you weren’t giving me a choice.” Helen said.
“I don’t need another mother.” Daria said coldly.
“Well you got one anyway so deal with it.” Helen smiled.
Daria sighed and thought for a few moments as Mai continued to work on the
tension on her shoulders. “It won’t work.”
“We’ll make it work. Families that are far more dysfunctional than ours do it
all the time.” Helen said with a smirk.
“I’m really dating Mai.” Daria said forcing eye contact.
“She seems really nice but I think Amy will agree that you two don’t need to be
running around town half naked.”
“I doubt I’ll ever be comfortable calling you Mom.” Daria said.
“Helen will be fine or we could try Aunt seeing as I’m your mother’s sister.”
Helen said calmly.
“What’s your point?” Daria said feeling confused at the quickly changing
events.
“Quit wasting your time trying to get rid of me. I’m not going anywhere.”
Daria didn’t respond but she knew she had just been checkmated.
“Now I’m going to go steal a few of your father’s beers. I’m sure Quinn is
waiting for an update.” Helen said standing up.
Daria waited until Helen had gone into the kitchen before she rose and started
toward her room with Mai following.
“I hate to ask but …” Mai started.
“It just came out. Can we talk about it later?” Daria said calmly as she caught
one of the girl’s hands.
“Does it mean there might be a later?” Mai said hopefully.
“Yes but don’t get all mushy on me.”
They entered the room and found Quinn sitting on her bed looking excited.
“Yes you’re dating!” Quinn said jumping to her feet on the bed.
Mai giggled as Daria groaned falling onto her own bed. Quinn jumped down and
moved over. “So did you get rid of her?”
“That would be a negative. She isn’t going anywhere. I think she really wants
to be part of our lives.”
Quinn’s whole body jerked as she heard the news. “So we’re stuck with her?”
“Looks that way. She’s ok with Helen or Aunt Helen for the time being.”
“But you two are dating so it isn’t all bad news, right?” Quinn said with a
half smile.
“Just kill me now.” Daria said.
“It’s not that bad. You already came out to the entire town.” Mai said before
laughing.
“Brittany’s going to be really disappointed that she doesn’t get to direct the
video.” Daria said sitting up.
“Please don’t tell me. I mean it I don’t want to know.” Quinn said forcefully.
That night Daria sat in the garage repairing a stack amp when Helen entered.
Dinner had gone remarkably well and Daria realized how much it hurt her mother
to be estranged from her older sister.
“I don’t suppose I could convince you to try out some more girly hobbies?”
Helen said with a sigh.
“Nope.”
“Mai is a really nice girl. I understand her GPA is just two tenths below
yours.”
“She’s also in the computer club and future MBAs.”
“Maybe she’ll convince you to join. It was nice to see her float out the door
like that. I guess every parent wants to see their child worshiped.”
“I guess.”
Daria looked up and saw Helen had taken a seat on an empty bar stool and looked
to be settling in.
“So tell me about this Ted Quinn is dating.”
Daria smirked and heard herself answer before she realized it. “Mr. Goody two
shoes. I hope you like corn.”
Part 17
It was election night and both Daria and Quinn were surprised to find Helen
spending the evening at the Morgendorffer home. The press gathered outside
waiting until after the polls closed and the statement Helen would be making.
The family and friends had become almost accustomed to the constant presence of
reporters who after losing interest in Daria had maintained a watch on the
house but no longer followed the girls to school.
Daria was honestly surprised to see a nervous and less confident Helen. Amy was
trying to keep the mood light as she grasped with both hands the floundering
relationship between them. :It’s nice to see Mom enjoying herself.:
The relationship between the young girls had managed to survive the switch over
from faking to a real one with only a few road bumps. Mai Lynn found that her
greatest challenge was to get Daria away from a computer long enough to date.
Quinn was camped out with Ted and her group of friends including Jane and
Trent. Mai was helping Jake in the kitchen with a smile. She loved to
experiment in the kitchen almost as much as Jake but kept herself grounded with
the reality that people still needed to eat the food. :At least the food
will be edible with her keeping him in check.:
“If I don’t win I’m thinking about moving here. I can always run for office in
this state and the commute to see the girls wouldn’t be so bad.” Helen was
telling Amy.
“I’m sure that would be fine and it would really annoy Rita.”Amy said with the
same little sister smile that Quinn used when she teased Daria.
“I wasn’t thinking Lawndale.” Helen said spotting the surprised look on Daria’s
face. “But maybe someplace nearby.”
“I guess that wouldn’t be bad. Do you think you’re going to win?” Daria said
calmly.
“It’s a close one. The press polls have us within 2 percent of each other.”
“If you don’t win this one there are still lots of chances for you to run.”
Jake said as he carried a large pot to the table.
“Thank you.”
“They’re saying the first district is about to report.” Quinn called from the
living room.
“I’m really glad I decided against an election party.” Helen said weakly.
“Why?” Daria asked.
“Because how embarrassed I’m going to be if I throw up in front of all of you,
at least you’re family.”
“You really care about this don’t you?” Daria said honestly surprised.
“I think I might have something to offer beyond helping people sue other
people.”
In the morning Daria stepped over the slumber party as she made her way to the
bathroom. Mai was curled up on the floor next to Daria’s bed sweetly hugging
the pillow from Daria’s bed that had sent Jane into a twenty minute rant about
friendship versus dating. After getting dressed she walked into the living
room, Helen asleep on the couch didn’t surprise her after the short but honest
concession speech at one in the morning. Daria headed into the kitchen and
started coffee.
It didn’t take long before people started to appear as if summoned by the
wafting smell of brewing coffee.
“Ummm coffee good.” Jane slurred as she entered the kitchen. Helen followed a
few seconds later and took the first cup offered out. Jane looked hurt at
having to settle for the second cup.
“First you give Mai your pillow and now someone gets coffee before me. That’s
just wrong.”
“Well quit making jokes about putting pictures of me and Mai online.”
“Fine but I better see results quickly.”
“You two have a very strange kind of friendship.” Helen said as she drank down
her coffee.
“She’s just mad that I’m gay and I don’t want to date her brother. It’s not my
fault she’s straight.” Daria said with a smile.
“And damn proud of it.”
“I am surprised that no one has a problem with you dating another female
student.” Helen said as she sipped her coffee.
“Ya right.” Jane snorted.
“There have been a few problems. Mostly some of Stacy’s former friends and some
of the football players.”
“I didn’t know. Have you told Am… your mother?” Daria felt a twinge at the look
of worry on Helen’s face.
“It wasn’t anything big. If we can’t handle a little teasing then we’re in for
a rough time.” Daria said as she pulled various items out for breakfast.
“That’s a very mature approach. …. So how did you get even?” Helen asked.
“…”
Jane laughed and poked Daria on the shoulder. “She locked the football players
in their English class rooms and put itching powder on the fashion club’s
clothes during gym.”
“Daria!”
“They called Mai a carpet munching chink.” Daria said coldly as she poured the
eggs she had been mixing into a frying pan.
Helen sighed and knew it was best to avoid any comment on the revenge for
awhile. :Like 30 years or so.: She thought with a smirk.
“Be quiet I think all the adults are still asleep.” Quinn’s voice came from the
hall.
“I can’t believe we slept together.” Ted’s answered in a loud whisper.
“I can’t believe you slept.” Quinn said as the couple walked into view.
“What were we supposed to do?” Ted asked looking confused. The couple still
hadn’t noticed the three women sitting in the kitchen.
“You were in bed with an attractive woman who was barely wearing anything.
Something more than cuddling is normal.”
“I thought Quinn’s bed looked extra lumpy this morning.” Jane said causing the
couple to freeze then spin around.
“Daria! Jane! Helen!” Quinn gasped.
Ted looked at the three women and then over at Quinn whose mouth looked like a
fish out of water. A few seconds later he was on the floor with Quinn panicking
over him.
It didn’t take long for Quinn with Helen’s help to revive the boy and get him
calmed down and Daria had to admit that Helen’s advice most likely saved
Quinn’s and Ted’s relationship. “He’s going to say something really stupid when
he wakes up so just grin and bare it.”
“I would never do that with Quinn.” Was Ted’s something stupid.
“Sure you would.” Helen just smiled as she stood back up and returned to her
chair. “But you didn’t so relax.”
“Ummm. I need to get home.” Ted said as he fumbled toward the door with Quinn’s
help and Daria heard the passionate kiss before Quinn returned looking near a
boiling point.
“He didn’t mean it. I promise you hormones will kick in on that boy sometime
soon.” Helen said nicely.
“I … he … they better.” Quinn said before stomping away to their room.
Amy and her daughters waved as Helen left and the absence of reporters was
noticeable. Daria watched her mother look wistfully as Helen drove away.
“Is she really thinking about moving here?” Quinn asked once the car was out of
sight.
“Yes. There is a law firm nearby that is always looking for good lawyers and it
would be just as easy to run for office here than in New York. I think she’s
dating one of the lawyers at the firm here. Some guy named Eric.” Amy said with
a shake of her head.
“I guess it won’t be too bad.” Quinn shrugged.
“It could have been worse. What if it had been Rita?” Daria was unable to
suppress the shudder that ran through her body at the thought.
“I would run away and join a circus.”
“Girls be nice. This is a good thing and Helen is really trying.” Amy said.
“At least she isn’t trying to step in to being a mother too much.” Daria said
in agreement.
“Besides we might need some help coming up soon.” Amy smiled as they walked
into the house.
“Why?” Quinn asked.
“Well I hear having a baby is really hard.” Amy answered without looking back
at them.
“What?”
“But I thought you couldn’t?” Daria stuttered as she processed the information.
“That’s what I said. The doctor said it was a one in a million chance but it
happened. I guess I won’t be needing Rita’s eggs hopefully.” Amy said, tears
choking her voice slightly.
Both sisters hugged their mother tightly. “So are you hoping for a boy or a
girl?” Quinn asked.
“A boy. Girls are just too much trouble.”
THE END.
