What Was Lost
Chapter One
The apartment was warm despite the freezing temperatures outside and the group
gathered within was enjoying an evening of watching TV.
“What is this movie called?” Asked a bubby woman named Jen who was cuddling
on the couch with a large fellow by the name of Sid who despite his large size
seemed to be hiding behind his girlfriend.
“She ran outside!” Answered a tall raven haired woman with rich
blue eyes and taste for wearing oversized bright shirts.
“It’s better than last week’s feature, at least this actress
can keep her clothes on, opps, I spoke to soon. How exactly did a branch rip
off her shirt and bra?” A much shorter woman said from the floor in front
of the couch.
“Shush. Don’t question good cinema.” Said Mark sitting on the
floor near to her.
“Statements like that are why I broke up with you.” The brunette
said cruelly.
“Ouch, At least you could have softened it a little.” He said
pretending to be hurt.
“I thought you broke up with him so I could go out with him.” The
taller girl said sitting down and leaning against the man.
“I WAS really mad at you that week.” Daria Morgendorffer said with
a straight face.
“He’s really not a very good boyfriend is he?” Jane Lane
laughed as Mark frowned and joined him on the floor cuddling with her boyfriend
to stop his puppy dog look.
“Another one dead, that’s 9 so far, this guy is good. Although a
little sloppy.” The third man in the room, Jim said from an easy chair.
“He’s cutting through them like rice paper, how is that
sloppy?” Asked Jane.
“Well he should hide the bodies, in real life he could keep killing
without notice until people started finding the bodies. Think about all the
people that disappear each year without a trace. One super serial killer who knows
how to hide b…” Jim explained until the small brunette ran from the
living room into her bedroom and slammed the door.
“Did your parents have any children who lived?” Jane shouted
angrily as she stood up and kicked the chair before following Daria to her room
and closing the door behind them.
“What did I do?” Jim asked confused.
“Remember when I told you about and then me saying don’t bring up
anything concerning your theory on missing people.” Mark said looking
disgusted.
“I do now, ****.” Jim said remembering.
“I swear man I need to kick your ass on so many levels right now.”
Mark said running his hands through his dark hair.
“I’m sorry, OK, I screwed up.” Jim said as he let the
knowledge of how bad he did sync in.
“Right now my girlfriend is consoling my ex-girlfriend and it pretty much
kills any chance I had to get some alone time with her tonight.” Mark
said.
“Look, I’m the biggest asshole in the entire world OK.” Said
Jim.
“Congratulations, I think we need to be leaving.” Jen said and
pulled Sid off the couch and moved to the bedroom door.
“Jane, we’re gonna take off and take the genus with us. See you
after winter break OK.”
After a quick, mumbled goodbye through the door the three left looking down.
Mark stood up and moved to the door and knocked gently and started talking.
“I know this is a bad time but I’m leaving tomorrow morning and I
wanted to give you one more chance to go with me, maybe Daria could come, she
could use a chance to get away too. We go hang out in a tropical paradise for
three weeks, it couldn’t hurt.” He said with a sigh leaning against
the door.
“I’m sorry Mark but you know how she gets during the holidays and
she can’t deal with another visit home right now since her dad had that
second heart attack and she spent the two weeks helping out down there. I need
to stay here and make sure she’s ok but I expect calls and you will be
graded on your performance during this trip.” Jane said after cracking
the door and blowing a kiss to her boyfriend.
“All right but tell her I’m sorry, I really thought Jim and her
would hit it off.” Mark said feeling like a total jerk.
He walked out of the apartment making sure the door locked behind him and
headed toward the stairs.
Jane returned to the bed and sat down next to her friend who had buried her
head in the pillows.
“You should go, you need a break.” Daria said tears still
strangling her voice.
“Only if you come with me.” Jane said and rubbed her back,
stretching out behind her
“I can’t believe I just started crying like that.” Daria
said.
“Well your hurting, and you tend to keep it all bottled inside until it
overflows.” Jane said as she pulled a blanket over them and moved into a
spoon position behind her friend.
“I thought you were getting enough from Mark.” Daria said as she
snuggled back against Jane.
“I am, you’re handling me and him way better than I did you and
Tom.” Jane said gently.
“You didn’t kiss him while we were still dating.” Daria said
and her voice was closer to its normal flat tone.
“True, did everything else but no kissing.” Jane teased.
“My apology for not teaching him better then.” Daria returned the
taunt.
“Well he does seem to be a slow learner but he keeps trying.” Jane
laughed.
“If only the kids from High School could see us now.” Jane added.
“Please, only half of them thought we were dating.” Daria said as
sleep started to overtake her.
“Ya but the other half thought we were married.” Jane mumbled.
“Onldsflgj, UPchhdff.” Daria sleep-talked.
“Truiuh” Jane answered.
The next two days passed quickly and the college portion of town emptied and
soon the neighborhood seemed devoid of life.
“Jane, Trent left a message for you to call and explain why you
can’t come to California and see him.” Daria said shortly after
they returned from shopping around 2 pm.
“He left the same one on my machine before the phone service got turned
off.” Jane said as she stood in the kitchen putting away various items.
“How many bills are you behind on?” Daria sighed.
“All of them but don’t even offer, I don’t care how much
money you have. Besides that would really feed the rumor mill if you start
paying my bills.” Jane laughed.
“Until they walk in on you and Mark going at it in the bathroom.”
Daria said pulling a bag of grapes from the counter and sitting on the table
eating them.
“You are never going to forget that are you.” Jane laughed.
“It was your second date and you nailed him in my bathroom.” Daria
teased gently.
“I hadn’t been with a guy for a year and it happened, I have
nothing to be ashamed of Mrs. Leather.” Jane fired back.
“Now I have to kill him and you.” Daria said sounding very serious.
“Go ahead, in the event of my death a letter gets sent to your
parents.” Jane shrugged.
“Well played Lane but now I have to kill them to.” Daria laughed.
The phone started ringing and Daria sighed loudly and walked over and picked up
the handset answering as she returned to the table.
“Morgendorffer Funeral Home, ready to serve all your afterlife needs. How
can I help you?”
“Daria.” Came a tired sounding response.
The effect of Daria was dramatic causing her to miss the table and fall
directly to the floor. Jane dropped the bags of chips she was holding and
rushed over and started to help her friend up when she heard the reply.
“Quinn.”
“Hi, Daria. I guess it’s a bit of a shock to hear from me.”
Quinn Morgendorffer said gently, still sounding tired.
“2 and a half years so yah it’s a shock. Are you ok? Where are you?
What happened?” Daria tried to control herself but was unable to focus
her thoughts.
“Look I’m sorry but I only have a few minutes of talk time on a
payphone. …I… I can’t do this. I shouldn’t have called.
Not for this. I should have called to talk a long time ago.” Quinn said
and Daria could hear something in the back ground that galvanized her.
“You need something, please don’t hang up.” Daria said
swiftly.
“I’m sorry.” Was all Quinn said.
“Quinn, talk to me, if you need some help.” Daria said now
desperate.
“I called to see if I could get some money. I’m sorry I
shouldn’t have, It’s just I lost my job and I feel like trash
begging you for money after not calling for all this time.” Quinn said
and Daria could hear the tears through the phone and the other sounds were
still there.
“I have money, I could send you some. How much do you need?” Daria
said firing the words off quickly.
“Any amount would help.” Quinn said sounding almost broken.
“Ok, if I send some prepaid phone cards would you use them to call
me?” Daria asked trying not to push.
“Yes, but don’t ask me to call them, I can’t talk to them
yet.” Quinn said softly.
“That’s fair, I’ll need to know where to send the
money.” Daria said as gently as she could.
Quinn read off an address and then got quiet for a moment.
“Please don’t give it to them. I’ll explain things later. The
phone is beeping so my time is almost up.” Quinn added.
“I’ll get you the money as quick as I can.” Daria promised.
“Thank you.” Was all Quinn got out before the line was cut off.
Daria sat on the floor staring at the phone looking stunned. Jane knelt next to
her looking equally shocked.
“She’s alive.” Daria said and then jumped to her feet and ran
to her room with Jane following her.
Daria sat down on her computer and started looking at her preferred online map
page and pointed to the closet.
“Could you pack me a suitcase.” Daria said looking grim.
“That was Quinn.” Jane said not understanding.
“Yes and I promised to get her some money and the fastest way I can get
it to her right now is by plane.” Daria said firmly.
“So are we flying first class again?” Jane asked as she pulled out
Daria’s battered luggage bag.
“I’m not sure you want to get involved with this, but I won’t
turn you away if you do.” Daria answered before adding. “Of course
we’re flying first class.”
“Boston international has a flight to Georgia leaving in three hours so
let’s get moving.” Daria said as she bought the tickets online and
printed them out.
“I think we can get through the traffic in time.” Jane joked.
“Good, I need to stop at the bank as well.” Daria said and grabbed
the bag and waited for Jane to finish one for herself as well.
“I can’t believe she called right out of the blue like this.”
Jane said as they hailed a taxi as soon as they hit the street.
“I can, I know why she left now.” Daria said and jumped in the taxi
followed by Jane.
“You going to share.” Jane pushed.
“Not until I’m sure.” Daria replied forcefully.
“Come on, your baby sister goes to start college and gets a refund on her
tuition and disappears. Now she’s calling for money and we’re
rushing to get it to her. I’ve been worried to, I’ve watched you
fall apart every time someone makes a comment about missing people or you see a
woman with the same color hair.” Jane laid out the guilt trip.
“I can’t, you’ll find out for sure at the same time I
do.” Daria said as the taxi pulled into her bank and she dashed inside,
returning minutes later and getting back into the car looking hurried.
“I have to ask, this is more than Quinn decided to run off to be a model
isn’t it.” Jane said as the taxi started toward the airport.
“Yes it is.” Daria said quietly.
The airport was almost empty as most of the students had flown out days before
and the trip through security went quickly and within minutes of the flight
being called at 5 pm they were being shown their seats in the first class
section.
“Not many college students spring for first class, you must really want
to get home.” The steward said as he seated them.
“College students, don’t you recognize her?” Jane said
pointing to Daria.
“Should I?” Asked the steward looking curious.
“Daria Morgendorffer, author of the number three book on the New York
times best seller list. The Night That Bled.” Jane bragged.
“I never, we are pleased to have you on board, Mrs. Morgendorffer.”
The steward said smiling.
“My friend likes to make a big deal out of it because she did the cover
art.” Daria said trying to smile.
“Well you two let me know if there’s anything you need during the
flight.” The steward said as he went to greet other passengers that
arrived at the door.
“I can have you killed for an autograph in the right circles,
Lane.” Daria warned.
“Get used to it, you’re almost famous.” Jane laughed.
“I’m also loaded, so I doubt I’ll have any problems buying a
shovel in Georgia or finding some place to lay you to rest.” Daria
threatened.
“You wouldn’t kill me.” Jane said not looking worried.
“Then I’m taking Mark back.” Daria said jokingly.
“Go for it but then you have to deal with his lack of skills.” Jane
shrugged.
Daria got quiet and Jane thought the discussion was over until they had been in
the air for almost two hours and Daria poked her in the ribs to get
Jane’s attention.
“What?” Jane asked.
“Can I ask you something about Mark?” Daria asked looking more than
a little embarrassed.
“Sure.” Jane answered.
“I’ve only been with two guys, I thought both of them were pretty
bad but maybe it was me.” Daria blushed.
“Well I never … with John but Mark is really bad but he’s not
as bad now as he was at first but it’s still bad.” Jane said
embarrassed.
“Ok, Mark was better than John so that makes me feel a little
better.” Daria said and blushed.
“Is this the conversion we said we would never have?” Jane asked.
“No I wasn’t going there. But it was the best thing in that area
that I have experienced so far but I still don’t think I’m that
way.” Daria said groaning at her inability to express herself.
“I feel the same way but I also dated Fred for a while and he knew what
he was doing so I can say without doubt that Mark just stinks. You’ll
find the right guy for yourself and when it happens it will be great even if it
sucks.” Jane smiled.
“I hope.” Daria sighed and looked at her watch.
“I take it you’re a little anxious.” Jane said trying to
distract her friend.
“3 hours 38 minutes till we land.” Daria groaned and put her MP3
player on and looked out the window.
Jane sighed and returned her headphones and tried to watch the movie.
The plane landed and the girls stood outside the airport in the cool night air
waiting for the shuttle that would carry them to a rental car lot. Jane picked
out a huge SUV that had Daria cursing as she climbed in but Jane claimed
driver’s privilege since Daria refused to drive.
Daria booted up her laptop and connected through her air-card then pulled up
directions to the address Quinn had given her.
As they drove Daria had to control the painful cramping that was taking over
her stomach. Jane started to swear as they pulled onto the last street
mentioned in the directions.
“Daria, did you bring your mace?” Jane said looking slightly
concerned.
“My god is this even America.” Daria said looking at the
neighborhood they had entered.
Broken down cars littered the side of the roads, houses that seemed to be
little more than leaning piles of lumber. Jane pulled into a rundown strip of
cheap apartments that looked like they should be condemned.
“Are you sure this is the right place?” Jane asked as she pulled
into the parking spot direction in front of door 16 and unbuckled her seat
belt.
“It’s the address she gave me.” Daria said as she exited the
SUV and moved to stand next to the front fender.
“This is bad Ma Amiga.” Jane swore softly.
“I know but Quinn is here and that’s all I care about right
now.” Daria said and fingered the infinity symbol that hung around her
neck.
“Can I care a little about making it out of here alive?” Jane
joked.
They moved together to the door and after standing there for what seemed like
hours. Daria raised her hand to knock.
They could hear someone moving inside and Daria felt her chest constrict when
she heard her sister’s voice call out.
“Just a minute please.”
Jane poked her in the side and spoke. “If you don’t breathe
you’ll pass out and I don’t think you want that to happen in this
particular local.”
Daria pulled in a touch of air and felt it move into her lungs just as the door
handle turned.
The door opened.
Chapter Two Found
Quinn Morgendorffer unloaded the box she had gotten from the local church and
sighed as she put the food away. The only thing that mattered was she had
enough food now for a couple of days and her pride be damned.
She was grateful for the help but it hurt how bad things had gotten so quickly.
:Daria would say it’s been getting bad for a while, I can’t
believe I called her to beg for money. I wish, well I wish for a lot of
things.: Quinn thought letting the shame wash over her and rubbed her
aching jaw and tried not to think about the night she would be having when her
tooth kicked into full swing.
The knock at her door interrupted her thoughts and she called out toward the
door.
“Just a minute please.”
She looked around to make sure the apartment looked presentable and moved the
box from the table to the kitchen counter and sighed.
:The damn landlord again, I told her I would have some money soon.:
Quinn groaned.
She went to the front door and rubbed her hair out of her eyes before she
turned the handle and pulled the door open.
Her sister stood there with her ever present partner in crime looking scared
witless.
Quinn froze not knowing what to do or say until Daria rushed forward and
embraced her suddenly and sobbing.
“Daria!” Was the only sound that managed to escape as she wrapped
her arm around her crying sister.
“You’re really alive, I missed you so much.” Daria cried
against her squeezing her tightly.
“I’m sorry.” Quinn said as the tears fell down her face and
her own cries joined her sister’s.
Jane pushed them inside and closed the door.
“How did you get here?” Quinn asked through the tears grateful.
“There are these things called airplanes and they, now don’t freak
out but they fly.” Jane smirked.
Daria held on to her sister for almost 10 minutes before pulling back and
wiping at her face.
“I should have known you’d show up here.” Quinn said wiping
at her own face and looking at her sister. The green jacket was gone, replaced
by a flannel winter coat over a t-shirt and blue jeans replaced the skirt. Her
hair was longer and seemed to have a wave through it and even the glasses had
changed into smaller more fashionable frames.
“You look so good, Daria.” Quinn exclaimed as she took a seat on
her ragged couch.
She saw her sister taking a moment to look at her and sighed loudly.
Her own hair was much the same as it was in High School but she no longer had
the funds to buy the vast amounts of hair care products she had enjoyed while
living at home so the bounce was greatly reduced and the shine dimmed. Her
clothes were a worn out pair of blue jeans and t-shirt. She doubted anyone from
her High School class would even recognize her.
“I had to come.” Daria said joining her on the couch.
“I ‘m sorry I never called, it was always going to be when I got on
my feet but that never happened.” Quinn explained trying not to meet her
sister’s eyes, afraid of what she might see there.
“I brought the money.” Daria said and held out a bank envelope.
“I’ll pay you back, I swear.” Quinn said meaning every word
as she hesitated then took the money. She opened and slid out the pile of bills
still bound with the paper strap bearing the amount of 10,000 dollars and she
dropped it into her lap.
“I can’t take this much. Where did you get this kind of
money?” Quinn said looking shocked.
Daria looked at Jane then back at Quinn. “You don’t know.”
Daria said in disbelief.
“Know what?” Quinn said looking from Daria to Jane.
“Oh this is going to be good.” Jane smirked.
“I got my first book published two years ago and since then I’ve
had four books on the New York Times best seller list. I’m pretty
rich.” Daria said blushing.
“No.” Quinn said and started crying. “Now you think I just
called because your rich.”
“No I don’t but I don’t care why you called Quinn, I’m
just glad you did. … So what’s up?” Daria said leaning in to
hug her sister again.
“Life, I lost my job, the shop closed and I couldn’t make rent the
next month so they kicked me out and we, I ended up here and I’m about to
get kicked out of this dump to. I didn’t even bother unpacking when I
moved in. I thought I could get another job but things are pretty rough down
here and every time a job opens up, about a hundred people show up to get it.
Do you want some coffee, I went to the food bank at the local church and they
were able to give me a few things.” Quinn said getting up from the couch
clearly uncomfortable and trying to change the conversion.
“I could use some coffee.” Jane said quickly.
Quinn headed over to what amounted to a notch in the wall that was her kitchen
and both Jane and Daria followed.
Jane looked at the items that had been pulled out of the box and laughed.
“I see we have similar tastes in food.”
“Um ya.” Quinn said as she started the coffee brewing and leaned
with her back against the old fridge.
“So did you two get married or what?” Quinn asked bluntly.
“We’re not gay.” Jane burst out.
“Oh, I thought you two would have hooked up and when I saw the both of
you I just figured that maybe you had gone that way.” Quinn blushed
slightly.
“We’re just friends.” Daria smirked.
“So you never …” Quinn asked.
“Once, one time and we both decided that it convinced us that we
weren’t gay. Even if it was great” Jane said leaning her head
against a wall.
“That took about 2 seconds, good job of holding back the British there
mate.” Daria sighed.
“So are you seeing anyone?” Quinn continued.
“No, Jane stole my last boyfriend.” Daria joked.
“She forced me to take him.” Jane returned.
Quinn raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“So what about you. Any fellows beating down the door or girls.”
Jane said and finished weakly.
“No I don’t have any time for that sort of thing what with …
everything and it would be guys, thank you.” Quinn answered and started
pulling out three coffee mugs and seemed embarrassed by the animals on them.
“You have Mary the Lion and Tom the Turtle.” Jane said gleefully as
she inspected the cups.
“Forgive her, since she squandered her first fortune on nick-knacks
she’s been in withdraw from cute.” Daria said shaking her head.
“Jane’s rich too.” Quinn smiled.
“I was not rich but I did have large sums of money but I went a little
crazy.” Jane admitted.
They sat at the table after Quinn quickly ducked down the hallway returning in
seconds.
“How’s Mom and Dad?” Quinn asked.
Daria looked down at her cup and cleared her throat.
“They took it really hard when you disappeared. Your Mom kept up a strong
front for a while but she had some stress related problems after about a year
but she’s doing better now. Your Dad kinda fell apart and stopped
working. He would spend all his time sending out missing posters to various
cities and then flying out there if there were any possible sightings. He had a
heart attack 6 months ago. He’s doing good but it was pretty scary for a
few weeks there.” Jane said when Daria didn’t look up or begin
speaking.
“So I ruined their lives anyway.” Quinn said as tears started to
run and Jane noted the complete and utter lack of makeup.
“No you didn’t, Dad got in a car wreck in Lawndale and him and the
other driver started screaming at each other and that gave him a heart attack
not you. Mom, well she was always a ticking bomb, you just sped up the fuse
some.” Daria said finally looking up.
“I did everything wrong but it was for the best of reasons.” Quinn
said taking a sip of her coffee.
“Want to tell me about it?” Daria said reaching out and took
Quinn’s hand.
“Not yet.” Quinn said looking nervous.
“How did you end up here in the middle of nowhere USA?” Jane asked.
“I took the first long distance bus when I left my college and it ended
up here. Everything was great until the money ran out, I had a good job working
in a clothing store and I had a better apartment but when the store closed
about two months ago things got bad really quickly.” Quinn said looking
depressed.
“Sounds like you might have a few stories to entertain us with.”
Jane said looking curious.
“No, I’ve been pretty busy with … things so my life has been
really boring.” Quinn forced a laugh.
A sudden and violent banging on the door turned all their heads in that
direction. Quinn stood up and walked back to the couch and picked up the money
and counted out several bills and pocketed the rest. She moved to the door and
opened it and was standing face to face with an elderly woman.
“There you are, didn’t I tell you to answer the damn door when I
knocked. If you can’t show some respect, you can get out. I guess you
still don’t have the rent.” The woman said yelling into
Quinn’s face.
“I do. Here’s the rest of last month’s and this month’s
and next month’s.” Quinn said and Daria heard a touch of
satisfaction in her voice.
“Where did you get this kind of cash, are you selling yourself on the
streets?” The woman spit out into Quinn’s face causing Daria to
jump to her feet and start toward the door only to be stopped by a bear hug
from Jane.
“My sister brought me some money to help out.” Quinn said pointing
to the SUV. “We’re visiting right now so I’ll have to talk to
you later.”
Quinn waved and closed the door and turned to see Daria still struggling to get
away from Jane.
“I really hate that woman.” Quinn sighed.
“OK, she’s gone you can let me go, I just need to get something out
of the truck.” Daria tried.
“You are not going to get your sister thrown out of her apartment.”
Jane said.
“No I’ll just buy the entire complex then fire that bitch and burn
it to the ground.” Daria said as Jane released her.
“Could you really do that?” Quinn said mouth hanging open.
“Maybe, I can’t image they would want much for this dump.”
Daria said and then her face tightened.
“What?” Quinn asked fighting the urge to take a step back.
“This isn’t right Quinn, this isn’t a place for anyone to
live. I’m taking you out of here.” Daria said firmly.
“Daria I can’t just pick up and leave.” Quinn started.
“Jane, find a phone book and find us moving company that will ship
anything Quinn wants to take with us to Boston. Quinn, make up a list of things
that we will need to buy to get you through till your stuff shows up.”
Daria said.
“Daria, stop. I can’t just leave, it’s a little more than
what you think right now.” Quinn tried.
“I’m hungry, how about you Jane.” Daria said cutting her
sister off changing directions fast enough to give them whip lash.
“I could eat.” Jane said looking confused.
“Order us some kind of takeout that has the guts to deliver here.”
Daria said and turned back to Quinn and looked at her sadly.
“You really thought you were doing the right thing taking off
didn’t you?” Daria sighed.
“It was.” Quinn said.
“No it wasn’t, not for you or me or Mom and Dad or anyone. It was
you running away from a problem but I can help get you to a place where it
won’t matter.” Daria said.
“You know!” Quinn said sounding surprised.
“Yes and it doesn’t make me want to leave or run off or be ashamed
of you. It does make me a little proud of you.” Daria said and closed the
distance and hugged Quinn again.
“Are you two hugging again?” Jane said after ordering the food.
“Ok, Big Mike’s Country Bar-B-Q was willing to deliver and I
ordered the King Hogs feast that they swear will feed ten but I doubt
it.” Jane informed them.
“Their really expensive, you should have called Sal’s.” Quinn
said covering her mouth.
“I was thinking that Mike’s was pretty cheap and sometime I would
rather pay the extra bucks to ensure that it’s not kangaroo I’m
eating.” Jane laughed.
Daria plopped on the couch and leaned back trying to not hear the sounds coming
from the couch and stretched.
“How long?” Daria asked.
“They said it depends on if they have to shoot anyone to get the food to
the door. I’m betting we might have a few delays when the natives start
smelling meat so around 45 minutes.” Jane said pointing toward the
window.
“It is a bad neighborhood but a lot of really nice people live here.
Their just poor.” Quinn said in defense.
“Sorry, I never thought of myself as sheltered till I drove into this
place.” Jane admitted looking honestly sorry.
“I can still remember when I first moved here so believe me I…
owww,” Quinn said and held her jaw with a clear expression of pain.
“What’s wrong?” Daria moved up from the couch.
“My wisdom tooth is abscessed and it’s killing me at the
moment.” Quinn said as she took a seat on the couch.
“Oh.” Daria said not knowing how to continue.
“You know it’s funny. I always thought of us as middle class. But I
think back on Mom and Dad paying bills, complaining the whole time but I
remember them throwing out numbers like 800 dollars and 1500 dollars then just
writing the check. When I went to the dentist the last time, it took me six
months to pay off a 500 dollar bill and I was working full time. I guess
that’s what a college degree will buy you, damn.” Quinn said
frowning.
“I’ll pay for you to go back to school and to get to a
dentist.” Daria tried.
“Things are complicated now Daria.” Quinn sighed.
“Fair enough and I can’t begin to know what you’ve gone
through but I want to help, if you’ll let me.” Daria said gently.
“I want to call Mom and Dad, I won’t tell them I’m here or
where you are, just that you called and your ok.” Daria continued
assuring the look of worry that crossed Quinn’s face.
“I guess that would be OK.” Quinn said looking relieved at
Daria’s understanding.
“Good.” Daria said and pulled out her cell phone and quickly went
through the contact list and found the home number for her parents.
“Daria, ask them if they forgive me for everything.” Quinn
whispered as the phone started dialing.
Daria put the phone on speaker phone when her mother answered.
“Mom, can you have Dad pick up the extension. I have some important
news.” Daria said.
“Of course dear.” Helen said calmly and seconds later her father
joined them.
“Hey how’s my famous daughter.” Jake said.
“I’m doing good and I have some really big news.” Daria said
her voice lifting.
“Well we’ve been expecting it for a while and let’s be honest
even your old dad could see what was going on and well your mom and me just
want you to know that we love you no matter what. I’ll be proud to have
Jane as part of our family.” Jake said.
“It’s true we saw this one coming for a while.” Helen laughed
pleasantly.
“So are you going to let your old Dad pay for the wedding?” Jake
laughed.
“What?” Daria said as her parents words sank in and Jane was
rolling on the floor and even Quinn was having to fight the laughter.
“I am touched that you choose us to come out to.” Helen said
sounding happy.
“But I’m not gay, we’re not gay.” Daria said a bit
loud.
“Oh, REALLY.” Helen said calmly.
“Are you sure kiddo?” Jake said.
Quinn was biting one of the couch cushions at this point and Jane was gasping
for breath.
“I’m pretty sure.” Daria said trying to control her temper.
“Then what’s your news?” Helen asked.
“What? Oh ya sorry I got a little sidetracked. Quinn called me.”
Daria said and waited for her parents to respond. She didn’t have to wait
long.
“Is she ok?” Helen asked.
“Where is she?” Jake asked.
“Stop, relax. She’s ok, just in a bit of money troubles and I sent
her some. I can’t tell you where she is because I don’t know but
hopefully she’ll call me again. She wanted to know if you forgave
her.” Daria said calmly.
“For what?” Helen asked.
“For everything, she said.” Daria said.
“There’s nothing to forgive. She didn’t do anything wrong but
we’re so worried about her. Promise me you’ll help her as much as
you can and tell her we love her and we do want to see her or talk to her or
just to know she’s ok.” Helen said starting to cry.
“You tell her I can be where ever she is in a matter of hours. There is
nothing she could do that would make us not want her to be our daughter.”
Jake said strongly.
“Nothing.” Quinn whimpered before covering her mouth.
The line got quiet and Daria was sure a scene to end all scenes was about to
occur until her mother said.
“I’m sorry, what was that Daria?” Helen asked stressing the
name Daria and Daria could hear the forced control in her mother’s voice
and the subtle shaking.
“I need to get going but I’ll call you back as soon as I get some
more information alright.” Daria said quickly.
“You keep us up to date.” Jake said and Daria could hear the change
in his voice as well.
“We’ll call you tomorrow.” Helen said and Daria hung up and
looked at a shaking Quinn.
“It’s ok.” Jane was saying as she brushed off her clothes.
“Thank you, I didn’t realize how much I missed them to.”
Quinn said wiping her eyes again.
Jane’s cell rang and she quickly answered it and spoke briefly then hung
up.
“Food is about 10 minutes out.” Jane informed them.
Daria looked at Quinn who seemed much calmer than she had been during the
entire visit so far and decided to push.
“Can I… see?” Daria asked in a hushed voice.
Quinn shook her head yes and stood up holding out her hand to Daria and pulled
her sister to her feet as soon as their hands clasped.
“What?” Jane asked and Daria shot her a look that screamed silence.
Quinn led them to the hallway.
Chapter Three. Truths
She led them down the hall and entered the first of two bedrooms and Quinn held
her finger over her mouth and moved forward to allow the other two enough space
to come into the small room.
Daria felt the tears pouring down her face as she looked at the few toys and
children’s bed that sat against the wall. The child slept peaceful on
bed, cuddling with her blanket like it was a teddy bear. She had shoulder
length iron black hair but the rest of her features were clearly and perfectly
Quinn’s. To say that she was beautiful was an understatement as the
little girl almost glowed. Daria’s eyes caught the glasses on the small nightstand
that sat at the head of the bed. She heard Jane leave the room with her chest
heaving with her own tears. Daria moved close to the bed for a better look,
fighting the urge to snatch the girl from the bed and cover her with kisses and
hugs. She found that she couldn’t move under her own power anymore and
Quinn pulled her gently out of the room.
“I’ll wake her up when the food gets here. We didn’t have
much for dinner so I’m sure she’ll want to eat.” Quinn said
as they returned to the living room.
“You had a baby!” Jane choked as she tried to catch her breath.
“Yes. The second guy I sleep with and I got myself knocked up. I hid it
for the last few months before I left for school or not for school. I
didn’t want my daughter to grow up where people might think she was a
mistake.” Quinn smiled.
“What’s her name?” Daria asked.
“Cleo Patricia Morgendorffer. She turned two years old 3 months
ago.” Quinn said proudly.
“Cleopatra. Nice.” Daria laughed.
“No one’s ever gotten that before.” Quinn said pleased.
“She’s beautiful.” Jane whispered.
“Thank you.” Quinn replied as small tears rolled down her cheek.
“I saw the glasses.” Daria commented.
“Brand new, luckily the doctor picked up on her eyes before I lost my job
so I was able to get them.” Quinn said wiping at her face.
“You make a pretty baby Quinn.” Jane said as she shook her head.
“Well I didn’t have much to do with that, genes or
something.” Quinn laughed.
Quinn refilled their coffee cups and brought then out to her sister and Jane
before taking a seat on the couch.
“I remember you weren’t fond of coffee and caffeine back in the
day.” Jane said trying to fill the dead air.
“Well having a kid has changed my mind or maybe it was the lack of
sleep.” Quinn grinned.
“So you took off to keep anyone from knowing you had her.” Jane
tried to wrap her mind around the news.
“No, I didn’t care who knew. All I do and did care about is trying
to give Cleo the best life I can and I was afraid of what I would have said if
one of my classmates had a baby. I couldn’t face all the people I looked
down on and made miserable taking it out on Cleo or William, if she had been a
boy.” Quinn sighed painfully.
“You didn’t have to do it all.” Daria said looking at the
floor.
“My little girl.” Quinn smiled.
“I would have helped; I would have understood why you wanted to get away
from there.” Daria sighed.
“And you would have ended up cutting back on your classes to help with
the baby. I didn’t want to drive a baby train through anyone else’s
life.” Quinn stated strongly.
“You could have called or sent letters, anything to let people know your
ok.” Jane scolded.
“Honestly I woke up one day and it was two days till her first birthday.
I can’t remember what I did last month but I can tell you about every
picture she drew for me for the last 6 months. Time moves differently when
you’re living for someone else.” Quinn admitted.
“I guess I can understand that.” Jane replied.
“Can I ask who the father is?” Daria said.
“Not yet, I don’t want anyone to hate me.” Quinn said sitting
down on the couch.
“If you ask I’ll tell you.” Quinn added softly.
“I can promise you that no matter who it is, I’ll still love you
and want to help you. I really want to be an aunt too. Please.” Daria
said joining her sister on the couch.
“Please forgive me.” Quinn said, her voice breaking.
“Anything and always.” Daria swore.
“I didn’t love him. I was just lonely, with you away at school and
the fashion club broken up. He was lonely too, he came over to drop off some of
your stuff that you left at his house and we started talking and hanging out
and I just wanted someone there. He just wanted someone he could pretend was
y..someone else. We started sleeping together and stopped almost as
fast.” Quinn said slowly.
“So he used you.” Daria said looking tired.
“I used him just as much, more honestly.” Quinn said looking at her
feet.
“I can’t forgive you. To do that, you would have had to do
something wrong.” Daria said.
“Oh my god.” Jane said as she started to stand but changed her mind
and sat back down.
“So it was Tom.” Daria said and was surprised at the lack of pain
this information was bringing her.
“What, Tom, no.” Quinn said looking surprised.
Jane just looked confused and she kept looking between Daria and Quinn.
Daria processed all the information she had and a grin crept on her face.
Quinn saw the light flicker in Daria’s eyes and knew that Daria had
figured out who the father was, she nodded to confirm the knowledge and both of
them turned to look at Jane.
“Why are you looking at me like that, I’m not the father.” Jane
said defensively and then groaned loudly.
Quinn looked at the floor and tried to shuffle her feet to avoid the worst of
the explosion she knew was coming.
“Wow.” Was all Jane said for several minutes.
“This changes things. Your coming back to Boston with us wither you want
to or not. Not one word or I’ll knock your silly prideful ass out and
pack you in the luggage.” Jane said forcefully.
“Why aren’t either of you mad or even upset.” Quinn asked
puzzled.
“You were 18 and you got with a really nice guy and got pregnant.
What’s to be mad about? It happens, not something you want to happen to
your baby sister but not anything to be mad about.” Daria said honestly.
A knock on the door made them all jump and Jane rushed to the door and peeked
out before opening it to allow the delivery men to carry the 15 bags of food
into the living room and put it down. Daria signed the receipt and tipped each
of the three men a $20 and thanked them as they left.
Jane started setting out the food as Quinn went to wake up Cleo and Daria
started to make plates.
Quinn carried Cleo out and Daria felt her heart stop as the little girl pointed
at her and said in a clear voice. “Daria.”
“That’s right, that’s my sister Daria.” Quinn said as
she put the little girl in her high chair and quickly deboned a piece of
chicken and moved a plate onto the built in table top. Cleo stared at the food
surprised before digging in making cooing noises as she did.
“She’s got your features but his hair and eyes.” Jane said
out of earshot of Cleo.
Quinn nodded and smiled.
“You smart like me.” Cleo said pointing at her glasses and then
Daria’s.
“I wear glasses.” Daria smiled at the little girl.
“She’s really smart. I remember all the stories about you
understanding things and reading at three and a half. She’s just like
you. She can’t read yet but she knows all the letters and a few words.
And she can count.” Quinn started to praise her little girl.
“Mommy.” Cleo whined clearly used to her mother’s bragging.
“I’m sorry sweetie it’s just I haven’t got to tell Aunt
Daria all about you yet.” Quinn smiled and handed her daughter a napkin.
“Ok.” Cleo said as Jane refilled her potato salad and tried
deboning another piece of chicken before Quinn stepped over and took over
leaving Jane staring at her unable to speak.
They sat eating without anyone speaking except harmless comments about the food
until Quinn turned to Cleo’s high chair and smiled gently.
“Sweetie, you know I would do anything for you right?” Quinn asked.
“Yes Mommy.” Cleo answered.
“Something I’m thinking about doing now is admitting I’ve
handled things badly. Daria has offered to let us come stay with her and help
us get back on our feet again. Would you like that?” Quinn asked her
daughter.
“No more bangs at night?” Cleo asked thoughtfully.
“No more bangs or fights outside or mean landlords or any of it.”
Quinn said trying not to start crying again.
“When?” Cleo asked.
“Tomorrow, in the morning.” Daria answered.
“Where you live?” Cleo asked.
“I have an apartment in Boston right now but we can live just about
anywhere we want to.” Daria said.
“Is it far?” Cleo asked.
“Several hours on an airplane.” Daria answered.
“I go airplane.” Cleo said looking excited.
Daria nodded her head.
“Beans come from Boston. We go there Mommy.” Cleo said and yawned.
“OK sweetie.” Quinn said.
“I tired, I go back to sleep now.” Cleo said and raised her arms so
her mother could remove the table cover from the chair and picked her up; after
wiping her face and hands clean.
Quinn carried her daughter back to her room but it was clear the child was
asleep before they had made it half way down the hallway.
When Quinn returned and took her seat at the table Daria hugged her.
“Thank you.” Daria whispered in her ear.
They started clearing away the finished food and wrapping up the pitiful
amounts of leftovers and Jane suddenly asked.
“What did he say when you told him?”
“I didn’t. I just left.” Quinn said looking ashamed.
“Don’t get like that, the only thing you should feel bad about is
not coming to Daria when you found out.” Jane said dismissing the
concern.
“Are you really ok with this.” Quinn sighed.
“Yes I am.” Jane smiled.
“How are we going to do this?” Quinn asked turning to look at
Daria.
“We’re going to pack whatever you can’t part with and take
some with us and the rest we’ll get some movers in the morning to ship
them to Boston. I need you to be honest with me about what you’re going
to need. I’m rich damn it so no holding back.” Daria said firmly.
“Deal but I’m pretty low maintenance these days.” Quinn
laughed.
“I have two spare bedrooms in my apartment and I think you two will like
Boston, at least until the summer and then we can figure out what comes
next.” Daria assured her.
“Anywhere is got to be better than here. Cleo deserves better than
this.” Quinn admitted.
“Where’s Jane?” Daria said looking around.
They quickly searched the apartment and after failing to locate her, Daria went
to the front door and opened it to find Jane standing outside talking on her
cell phone.
“I don’t care if you think that another month in LA will get things
moving for your career. It’s been a year and it’s time for you to
get your ass back to Lawndale and get a job. I’ll be in town to see you
in about a week maybe two and I want to see a new and improved hardworking completely
cleaned up with a paying job brother. I’m not asking, you slacker. Look I
can’t go into in now but it’s time Trent. Trust me, it’s
time.” Jane was saying into her phone.
“Thank you.” Jane finished and turned to find Daria and Quinn
staring at her jaws hanging open. Jane looked at the ground for a brief moment
then raised her head and fire burned in her eyes.
“That’s my niece in there and she deserves to have a dad even if
you and him aren’t together. Trent needs to get a job so he can take care
of his daughter. He isn’t a bad guy and he’ll make a good dad for
her. Give him a chance. Please.” Jane begged grabbing Quinn shoulders
gently.
“Jane, it was never him, I didn’t want to wreck his life
either.” Quinn said.
“His life’s all ready wrecked, maybe this will fix it.” Jane
shrugged.
“I don’t love him or want to be with him if that’s what
you’re thinking.” Quinn sighed.
“Don’t we have a high opinion of ourselves.” Jane laughed and
hugged Quinn tightly.
“I’ll give him a chance, to be a dad.” Quinn said honestly.
“Thank you.” Jane said as Daria took her turn to push them in the
door and closing it behind them.
“OK this is how I see things right now. Quinn has a 2 year old, Trent is
the father and Quinn is willing to get out of this dump and come back with us
to Boston but that’s not the biggest thing.” Jane said.
“What’s bigger than that?” Quinn said curiously.
“I’m wondering about that myself.” Daria shrugged.
“This child is the combination of Morgendorffer and Lane genes. When she
comes of age she will rule the world with an iron boot.” Jane ended with
an evil laugh.
“Is she serious?” Quinn whispered to Daria.
“Yes and no, but in a good way.” Daria whispered back.
“Am I to take it you plan on being an active aunt.” Quinn giggled.
“Hell yes.” Jane and Daria both said at the same time.
“Ok but we will have to lay down some ground rules concerning spoiling
your niece.” Quinn tried to say firmly.
“Ya right, I going to spoil her rotten and side with her in every fight
she ever has with you until I’m the favorite aunt.” Daria declared.
“Not fair, I want to be the favorite aunt.” Jane pouted.
“You’re going to be the weird aunt she loves to hang out with to
drive her mom nuts.” Daria laughed.
“I’m standing right here.” Quinn grinned.
“So you can’t complain that you didn’t know what to expect
later on.” Daria said sitting on the couch and putting her feet up on the
coffee table.
“I have about two bags of clothes for Cleo and another one for myself and
a few boxes of pictures and Cleo’s toys. Beyond that I guess we take
whatever you want to take.” Quinn said sitting down next to her sister
after knocking her feet down.
“Like what?” Daria asked.
“Cleo’s bed and her high chair, stuff like that.” Quinn
shrugged.
“Is she attached to any of it?” Daria asked.
“No, it’s all pretty new well, new used, except for the toys and
her blanket and clothes.” Quinn said.
“Why?” Jane asked.
“My last landlord let me take clothes and toys and bedding but none of
the furniture.” Quinn sighed.
“Anything you want to try to get back from him.” Daria asked.
“No.” Quinn answered.
Well then we load up everything you want to take in the car and drive it to a
shipper and send it the fastest way money can buy and fly out of this place. I
can buy whatever you need when we get to Boston.” Daria said taking her
boats off.
Quinn looked at Daria and then Jane and smiled.
“If you two want to use my bed tonight it’s ok, I know you said you
weren’t but if you did want to it’s not like anyone would ever know
…oh god that’s really gross.” Quinn said as she blocked one
of Jane’s socks flying at her head.
“We are not gay.” Jane said looking disturbed.
“I’m just teasing.” Quinn said and turned to Daria who seemed
to be falling asleep already.
“Let me get your two some blankets and pillows.” Quinn said and
left heading down the hallway.
Jane waited until Quinn had moved to the back of the house and whispered to
Daria.
“You should tell her or she’s going to start assuming things when
she gets up in the morning.”
“I will as soon as she gets back.” Daria sighed.
Quinn returned and handed out well used pillows and blankets and Daria took
hers and spoke up.
“Just so you know. I’m not gay, Jane’s not gay but she
does… we… do.” Daria stumbled trying to find the right words.
“Oh hell, we sleep together. No sex, just sleep but we wanted you to know
so you didn’t freak out in the morning.” Jane said after listening
to Daria ramble on.
“What she said.” Daria added.
“Ok, I’m informed but keep it down, these wall are paper
thin.” Quinn fired a parting shot as she headed toward her bedroom.
Daria and Jane both groaned but it didn’t stop them from laying tightly
against each other on the couch.
“This is all your fault you know.” Jane groaned.
“I’m not the one with a sleeping disorder.” Daria returned.
“Did I ever tell you how much I appreciate your help and getting me to
that doctor.” Jane said as she felt her eyelids growing heavy.
“Only every time you get nervous about the possibility of me tossing you
out of bed.” Daria yawned.
“I mean it Daria.” Jane pushed.
“I know but honestly what else could I do, I love you.” Daria said.
“Oh my god, my heart is all a flutter. Did you just confess your deepest
desire?” Jane said as she started to drift to sleep.
“I could just decide to leave you here.” Daria said.
“But then you would have to drive that monster to the airport.”
Jane said.
“The truck’s not that big.” Daria smiled.
“I was talking about your sister.” Jane laughed weakly.
“She’s different now and she wasn’t ever the monster.”
Daria said and Jane heard something in her voice that told her not to push
tonight, guilt screaming out.
Quinn lay in her bed letting tears soak her pillow. :It’s finally
over. I can have my family again. Cleo can have her family to and maybe even a
dad. Trent was always so nice and I know he will love Cleo.:
Chapter Four Grandparents
The morning went quickly with Quinn giving away the small amount of food items
she had to one of her neighbors and informing her landlord she was leaving
causing another scene of the woman screaming at them as they finished loading
the SUV.
“I take you and that kid in when no one else would and this is the way
you repay me, leaving me without a bit of notice.” The woman screamed as
she walked around the truck complaining loudly.
“I paid you for this month and next month so it’s not like
I’m leaving you in a lurch.” Quinn said buckling Cleo into her car
seat.
Jane got into the driver’s seat and started the car turning on the heater
as Quinn moved around and got in the backseat next to Cleo and Daria walked to
the front passenger door when the woman grabbed her and started yelling in her
face.
“Please make me use it.” Daria growled.
Daria calmly held up a can of mace and shook it directly in the woman’s
face causing her to back off.
Daria quickly got in and closed the door as Jane pulled out of the parking lot.
“We go airplane.” Cleo said from her car seat happily.
“Yes but first we have make a few stops and then Aunt Daria and Aunt Jane
are going to take us on a big airplane.” Quinn said smiling.
“Two aunts, whose the queen.” Cleo laughed.
They shipped the majority of Quinn and Cleo’s personal items and after a
quick stop at her church to make goodbyes, the group turned in the rental car
and were quickly boarding their flight.
“Make fly.” Cleo was demanding as she bounced against the confines
of her seatbelt.
“Soon sweetie. Jane could you stop taking pictures.” Quinn sighed.
“My niece is going on her first plane flight, I want pictures.”
Jane pouted but relented.
“Thank you.” Quinn said rubbing her jaw as her tooth started throw
waves of pain at her.
“You’re going to the dentist as soon as we get to Boston, I mean
today.” Daria said between calls as they waited for the plane to start
its taxi to the runway.
“I’m not going to argue that.” Quinn said as Cleo continued
her bouncing.
“Good. I having my business manager prepare a list of doctors and child
care in the area for you to review after we unwind a little and I opened a
college fund for Cleo.” Daria said casually.
“Anything else.” Quinn frowned.
“I know I’m pushing a bit but I don’t want you to have to
stress over anything for awhile and I still want you to consider going back to
school.” Daria said looking contrite.
“It’s ok but it’s just a lot is happening all at once.”
Quinn said reaching across the aisle and taking her sister’s hand.
“Well we haven’t even told the parents yet but I think they know
we’re together but I’ll bet you a car that they will be in Boston
the next day or sooner when they hear about Cleo. Hell I buy you a car
anyway.” Daria smirked.
“I don’t need a car.” Quinn groaned.
“I was kidding.” Daria said as the stewardess announced they would
be taking off and the plane started rolling.
“I fly!” Cleo said as she stared out the window as the plane took
off.
Quinn stared at the phone mounted to the wall in front of her and turned toward
Daria who had a credit card out already holding it toward her.
“Mind reader.” Quinn smiled as she took the card and pulled the
phone down.
She knew the number by heart and it hurt as the phone rang three times before
being answered.
“Morgendorffer residence, this is Jake.” Her father said into the
phone.
“Daddy.” Quinn said softly.
“Quinn oh princess, I can’t tell you how good it is to hear from
you.” Jake cried into the phone.
“Ditto Daddy.” Quinn said smiling.
“Where are you?” Jake asked.
“In a plane, heading to Boston. Daria’s letting us move in with
her.” Quinn said and bit her tongue.
“That’s great, we still have your room here too if you want. Did
you say us?” Jake said catching her slip.
“Is Mom there?” Quinn asked.
“No, she’s at work, give me a second and I’ll call
her.” Jake said and Quinn heard hold music take the line.
A few moments passed and the music stopped and her mother was there.
“Quinn, oh my god. Thank you for calling us.” Helen said and Quinn
heard the sounds of traffic near her.
“Are you driving?” Quinn asked before proceeding.
“No, I pulled over when your father told me he had you on the
line.” Helen replied.
“I’m still here to kiddo.” Jake said.
“I’m with Daria and we’re flying to Boston now, I don’t
want to go into too much right now but I’m sorry for running off. I have
something to tell you.” Quinn said pausing to gather her strength.
“Whatever it is, we love you.” Helen said sounding like she was
crying.
“I had a baby. She’s two years old and her name is Cleo and
she’s enjoying her first airplane flight right now next to me. Cleo say
hello to your grandparents.” Quinn said without pausing or breathing and
held the phone next to Cleo’s mouth.
“Hello, I fly.” Cleo said before Quinn pulled the phone back to her
ear and listened to the silence.
Quinn started to feel her hands trembling as the seconds ticked by.
“When will your flight be landing, Quinn are you there.” Helen
said.
“2:15 is the scheduled time.” Quinn answered confused.
“Jake can you drag out the luggage before I get home, I’ll turn
around as soon as we get off the phone.” Helen asked.
“Already doing it.” Jake responded.
“We’ll be in Boston by tonight and I don’t care if she has a
bedtime or not, you will be letting her stay up to visit.” Helen said
forcefully.
“Ok.” Quinn smiled.
“I can get one of those world’s greatest grandpa shirts now.”
Jake said sounding almost childlike.
“I don’t want to pry but we will have lots of questions after we
spend some time with our grandchild. What does she like?” Helen asked.
“She’s two Mom. She is just like Daria though.” Quinn mused.
“So books and educational toys then, anything else.” Jake replied.
“Well she doesn’t have a teddy bear.” Quinn offered.
“I’ll get her the biggest one I can find.” Jake stated.
“Ok.” Quinn smiled again.
“Well we will let you go but it’s just until we get up there
sweetie.” Helen said sounding almost chipper now.
“We love you Quinn and this is a dream come true for us.” Jake said
sounding happier than Quinn could ever remember hearing him sound.
“Ok, I love you two and I’ll see you when you get up here.”
Quinn said and ended the call and handed Daria back her credit card.
“How long till they get here?” Daria asked.
“Mom said tonight.” Quinn laughed at the expression on
Daria’s face.
“This, I’m blaming you for.” Daria teased.
The plane landed on time and with only carry-on luggage they made their way
swiftly out of the airport to the taxi that Daria had hired from the plane.
“Ok, first we hit some shops then Quinn has a dentist appointment at
4:00. After that we head to the apartment and start waiting for the deliveries.
Cleo what kind of furniture do you want in your room.” Daria asked the
little girl who was trying to see everything all at once.
“Red.” Cleo answered.
“I like her!” Jane smiled.
“Red it is.” Daria smiled.
“What about you Quinn?” Daria asked.
“Anything is fine.” Quinn answered.
“Ok, I’ll call Jodie Landon and have her send me the list of
graduates and then call Sandi Griffin and have her fly in to help
redecorate.” Daria said firmly.
“Ok, I’ll check out what they have, that’s just wrong
Daria.” Quinn giggled.
“I’m not the one that spent 3 years hanging out with her.”
Daria laughed.
“I was such a brat.” Quinn said shaking her head.
Cleo picked out a bright red metal bedroom set that included a desk and two
dressers as well as chair and a table all that matched the bed. Quinn started
looking after her first two choices were rejected out of hand by Daria who took
one look at the number on the price tag and demanded Quinn find something she
really liked.
A few minutes after being sent back into the showroom floor for a third time
Quinn pointed to a solid red oak set that while not being the most expensive in
the store had enough of a prize to convince Daria her sister would honestly
like it.
“Daria I don’t need a four thousand dollar bedroom set.”
Quinn said as Daria informed the sales clerk of their choice and ordered the
optional extras for the room as well.
“I spent more on my last TV than that.” Daria shrugged.
“I’m not rich Daria, I’ll never be rich. I need to stay
grounded.” Quinn said looking at Daria with a tiny smile.
“I don’t think so. You need to reach for the stars so Cleo knows
their out there.” Daria answered strongly.
“Your good oh, you’re very good.” Quinn said and ended her
arguments.
The dentist was a much faster visit than expected as he had Quinn in the back
and under in seconds. An hour and 45 minutes after they arrived they were
loading a groggy Quinn into the taxi and after a quick stop at the drug store
to fill her prescription, they made their way to Daria’s apartment.
The next hour flew by while Quinn slept on the couch and Cleo explored the
living room as a nature show played on the TV, Jane left to check her mail and
Daria decided on lunch for her and Cleo. Of course it was pizza. Shortly the
deliveries from the stores did indeed start, creating a train of delivery men
going back and forth to the apartment and the street.
The men quickly assembled both bedroom sets and Daria made the beds as Cleo
jumped on them. Daria noted that Cleo’s room was at least twice as large
as the living room of the apartment she had just moved out of. Jane returned
from her apartment looking depressed but checked on Quinn before taking a seat
in one of the chairs and catching Cleo as she came out of the room almost
bouncing as she described her new room to Jane who scoped her up and listened
as the girl described everything as best she could. Daria joined them and
smiled as Cleo bounced on Jane’s lap.
“How did your visit go?” Daria asked.
“The roommates want my stuff out. They said I’m just storing boxes
there anyway.” Jane sighed.
“Well you still have the studio across the hall. Your boxes won’t
take up to much space and you sleep here any night you’re not out with
Mark. I can just start the rumor your with Quinn to dispel any you and me
stories that might start up.” Daria said offhanded.
“Don’t even think about it. I’m not your beard.” Quinn
said from the couch as she sat up.
“Mommy.” Cleo said and climbed down from Jane’s lap and ran
to her mother.
“How are you feeling?” Daria asked as she got a glass of water and
returned to the couch and held it out to Quinn along with a pill bottle.
“Like someone took pliers and ripped out one of my teeth.” Quinn
said as she swallowed one of the pills and washed it down with the water.
“Two of them as a point of fact.” Daria answered.
“Great.” Quinn said and leaned against the back of the couch as
Cleo sat on her lap.
“Mom called and their in the air, She said they should touch down about 7
pm and be here an hour later so you might want to eat something and then catch
some more Zs if you can.” Daria said rubbing Quinn’s head.
“I’m glad I called you but I feel like I’m about to wake up
from a dream.” Quinn said.
“Not anytime soon.” Daria smirked. “Just wait until I turn
into a bossy pain in the ass and try to run your life.”
“I thought that was yesterday.” Quinn teased.
“You haven’t seen anything yet, she can be the biggest
…” Jane started then stopped and began laughing at Daria’s
face.
“Aunt Daria give me ice cream.” Cleo piped up.
“Did you have lunch already.” Quinn asked and looked at the time.
“Pizza and more ice cream.” Cleo added.
“DARIA!” Quinn yelled.
“We had a salad with it.” Daria defended herself from the glare
bursting from her sister’s eyes.
“I hate to interrupt what hopefully will be a really good Daria dress
down but I have to ask. Do you have any cold weather clothes?” Jane asked
from the chair looking at Quinn.
“Some but it doesn’t get this cold down south.” Quinn
answered.
“I think Quinn should take Cleo shopping if she feels up to it
tomorrow.” Daria said.
“I think I might but knowing Mom and Dad they will spend the day tomorrow
buying anything they can think of for their first grandchild.” Quinn
sighed.
Jane made up some mashed potatoes and pudding along with a soup broth for Quinn
to eat and Cleo looked sadly at her mommy while she was eating.
“Mommy can’t eat pizza.” Cleo said with despair.
“That’s just more for the rest of us.” Jane declared.
“How long do I have to eat like this?” Quinn sighed as she sipped a
chocolate flavor supplement drink.
“3 to 5 days according to the dentist.” Daria answered.
“At least it doesn’t hurt so bad.” Quinn answered.
“I would think it should hurt worse.” Jane said surprised.
“The real pain stopped as soon as they got the teeth out, this is a dull
ache.” Quinn shrugged.
They spent the remainder day setting up the apartment in a more child friendly
way which consisted up putting safety covers on the electrical outlets and then
staring around the apartment trying to find something that might fall on or be
played with by a two year old.
“I don’t see anything.” Jane said scratching her head.
“Are you saying my home was already kid friendly.” Daria said
almost in disbelief.
“Looks that way.” Quinn said.
“You already hide the dangerous stuff to keep it away from Jane.”
Quinn added patting Daria on the shoulder.
“Hey.” Jane said trying to look hurt.
They were watching one of Cleo’s DVDs when a sudden pounding on the door
woke Quinn up where she was dozing and caused Jane to scream and drop a bowl of
popcorn making Cleo start laughing and Daria almost jerk out of her seat.
Daria got up and answered the door, letting in her parents who quickly unloaded
bags filled to the brim on her rushed in and started taking turns crushing
Quinn for almost 5 minutes until Quinn pointed to Cleo and they swooped down on
the child, kissing and hugging the girl, who grabbed a newspaper and started
smacking them on the head with it after quickly rolling it up.
Cleo sat giggling as she continued her smacking until Jake and Helen sat down
next to her.
“She’s so perfect.” Jake smiled looking at his grandchild.
“She looks like a mix of Quinn and Daria.” Helen said unable to
stop rubbing Cleo’s head.
“I’m your grandpa Jake, what’s your name?” Jake said
lowering his head to Cleo’s level.
“Cleo.” Cleo answered giggling happily grabbing his nose.
Daria pushed the bags to Helen and took a seat on the floor next to Cleo as her
parents started pulling toys and other gifts for Cleo and pushing them toward
the child who squealed with each new item.
They spent three hours playing with the Cleo until she laid down asleep on top
of the huge teddy bear that Daria would swear for years to come could be used
as a bed.
Quinn carried Cleo to her bedroom and tucked her in with the teddy bear and
returned to the living room as Jane and Daria started tidying up the room and
her parents pulled the last two bags they brought with them over next to them
as Quinn sat down on the couch.
“You taken such good care of her.” Helen said and Quinn wanted to
cry at the pride that seemed to flow out of her mother’s eyes.
“If you saw the place Daria rescued us from, you wouldn’t think
that.” Quinn sighed.
“You never saw the place we lived in when Daria was born, it was closed
down because it was unsafe and that was just six months after we got the house
in Highland.” Jake said.
“Go ahead and ask.” Quinn said seeing the question burned in her
parent’s eyes.
“You were pregnant when you left, it’s why you left. You thought we
would be angry or ashamed or throw you out.” Helen stated.
“Yes and no. I thought you would be upset but I knew you would try to
help with the baby but you would think I ruined my life and it might rub off on
the way you treated Cleo.” Quinn said honestly.
“That’s fair but we love her and you and that’s all that
matters.” Jake admitted.
“Do we know the father?” Helen asked.
Quinn shook her head yes.
“Is it one of those boys that use to follow you around?” Jake
asked.
“Was it Trent sweetheart?” Helen asked.
Quinn looked shocked at her mother and nodded yes.
“I saw the way you two started getting close before the summer and I
thought at first it was just loneliness but toward the end I knew you were
dating.” Helen sighed.
“Did he run out on you?” Jake said sounding ready to become angry.
“NO, he doesn’t even know about Cleo.” Quinn said quickly.
“You didn’t want to dump a baby on him, or us.” Helen sighed
loudly this time.
“I screwed up but I thought it was for the best.” Quinn defended.
“Water under the bridge now but the lawyer in me is screaming to inform
the father and demand support.” Helen said.
“He’s in LA right now but he should be back in Lawndale
soon.” Jane piped up from the lazy boy.
“Good, I always liked Trent and I hope I can keep on but if he
…” Jake started.
“Hush Dad, Trent will be given a chance to do the right thing by Cleo and
be a part of her life. Let’s not start hating him for something he might
or might not do.” Daria said firmly.
“We brought you some things.” Helen said nodding in agreement with
Daria.
Quinn smiled and winced as her jaw started hurting with the movement.
Helen and Jake watched her take another pill and accept an ice pack from Daria
who appeared at her side almost by magic.
“I had two teeth removed this afternoon.” Quinn explained trying
not to move her jaw.
“Well we brought you some of the beauty products you used to like so much
and some of your old clothes are in the car and well this.” Jake said
handing the bag over to Quinn who forced a smile at the various items and took
a folded piece of paper from her mother.
It was a check for twenty thousand dollars.
“I can’t take this.” Quinn said showing the check to Daria
who smiled.
“She did the same thing to me yesterday when I gave her some
money.” Daria smirked.
“It was supposed to be for your college but it will go a long way to
getting you on the right track.” Helen smiled.
“Daria has given me so much, I can’t.” Quinn said handing the
check back.
“Quinn, I know Daria has more money than we ever did, more than she knows
what to do with honestly. I bet she’s already setup a college fund for
Cleo and what does that leave us to pay for.” Helen said firmly.
“Her wedding.” Jane tried.
“There is that, I guess you’re part of the family now
anyway.” Jake said ending upbeat.
“Yep, do I get an allowance?” Jane asked cheerfully.
“No, but it does entitle us to infer at will in your life.” Helen
said sweetly.
“I’m a Lane, I like the idea of someone caring enough to be bossy
or nosey.” Jane replied.
“So where are you two planning on staying?” Daria asked but she
already knew the answer.
“Well I seem to remember this couch pulls out and that way we can start
really spoiling our granddaughter first thing in the morning.” Jake
declared.
“That’s not a problem is it?” Helen asked.
Daria sighed and shook her head. “No but there’s something I need
to explain to you, first I’m not gay.” Daria started the long
explanation of the sleeping arrangements that would be occurring.
Chapter 5 Trent.
Jane stumbled out of the bedroom around 6:30 am heading directly for the
kitchen and started drinking the coffee that had finished it’s timed
brewing cycle only moments before.
Jane sighed as the third cup allowed her to open her eyes and spot Helen
standing at the end of the counter smiling at her.
Jane looked down quickly to make sure she was covered up and returned the
smile.
“Jane.” Helen started.
“You know my rules. Three questions, no betrayal of trust.” Jane
smirked.
“Deal.” Helen said and started pulling items out of the fridge.
“Sleeping disorder.” Helen started.
“Good start, it started after I got up here to Boston. I started having
problems getting to sleep and staying asleep and then I started moving around
in my sleep, which would wake myself up and then I couldn’t go back to
sleep. It got pretty bad and after a 9 day no sleep binge I got arrested for
acting crazy in public. Daria bailed me out of jail and I crashed here that
night. I slept in her bed with her and I really slept, it was the first time
since I got up here that I had a real night’s sleep. I went back to my
apartment the next day and it started again but Daria was paying attention and
she dragged me to this sleep clinic downtown and they found out I had REM Sleep
Behavior Disorder. I act out my dreams physically. Drugs didn’t help but
once again Daria stepped in and saved the day. It didn’t happen if I was
with someone. So as long as I have a bed buddy, I’m fine.” Jane
said as she helped Helen prepare breakfast for everyone.
“Ok, Boyfriends.” Helen asked.
“Not since her and Mark broke up, I swear I didn’t go near him
until after they broke up and Daria suggested it.” Jane defended quickly.
“Easy Jane, driving.” Helen said gently.
“Not since those kids pushed the baby carriage in front of her car. It
was empty but it shook her up a lot.” Jane sighed.
A sudden flurry of small feet turned them both around as Cleo came out of her
room and ran directly into her mother’s room and woke Quinn up by jumping
on the bed repeatedly judging from the sounds coming from the bedroom.
Quinn came out almost at once and then froze when she saw the living room and
smacked her forehead.
“Cleo, sweetly I don’t need to look for work for a couple of days
so we can turn off the alarm clock.” Quinn said nicely to her daughter
who had started pulling her toward the kitchen.
“Ok.” Cleo said and bounced to her room to play with some of her
new toys.
“Hey Quinn.” Jane said pointing to the coffee pot.
Quinn looked at the sludge and poured herself half a cup and quickly filled the
remainder of the cup with water and started drinking it.
“Alarm clock.” Helen said looking amused.
“She can wake up at any time she wants and she’s really good at
waking me up.” Quinn smiled.
“Daria can do the same thing.” Jane said as she started on the
bacon.
Helen slid a tray of cinnamon buns into the oven.
“Yes I can’t remember when I noticed it first but it always
unnerved me a bit.” Helen muttered shaking her head.
“So what’s the plan for today?” Jane asked.
“Drag my daughter and granddaughter out for a day of shopping and
pampering.” Helen smiled.
“Mom, I really don’t need stuff like I used to. A warm bath to soak
in is heaven to me now.” Quinn said looking embarrassed.
“Then an hour or two at a spa will be like a vacation in heaven. Quinn
nobody thinks you haven’t changed but that’s no reason to deny yourself
a little pleasure.” Helen stated firmly.
“Fine but don’t expect me to dress like I used to.” Quinn
relented.
“You seem to still have the body for it.” Jane pointed out
Quinn’s still perfect figure.
“I certainly wish I had been able to keep a stomach that flat after my
first child.” Helen said enviously.
“Still the total package.” Jane said pointing between Quinn’s
stomach and breasts and indicating her butt.
“Well until this.” Quinn said and lifted her nightshirt to show a
scar running sideways from her belly button, three inches long that seemed to
stand out more against the near perfect-ness of everything around it.
“What happened?” Helen asked covering her mouth.
“Infection after Cleo was born; they had to take some stuff out. I
won’t be having anymore kids.” Quinn said as she lowered her shirt.
“I’m sorry.” Jane said feeling like an ass for making the
comment.
It was quiet for several long seconds until a voice came from behind them.
“Then it’s good you got it right on the first try.” Daria
said as she entered the kitchen.
“Got a point there, she is the perfect kid. Almost makes me want to have
one.” Jane added.
“Now that’s a scary thought.” Quinn said with a laugh.
“Hey!” Jane laughed.
Jake awoke as Cleo decided to play on the pulled out couch and she decided his
pillow was needed to prop up the various stuff animals but with the smell of
breakfast filling the apartment he didn’t mind much.
The entire family sat around the counter and table and enjoyed the combination
of food and family before Helen and Jake dragged Quinn and Cleo out of the
apartment for an entire day of planned out family type bonding that had Quinn
looking nauseous.
Jane left to pick up her boxes from her apartment and Daria was enjoying the
time alone when a sudden knocking forced her to the door.
She opened the door and was taken by surprise to see Trent Lane standing in her
doorway holding two bags and three guitar cases. He had changed much since her
days in High School, maybe a few more tattoos.
:I think it just hit the fan.: Daria thought as she struggled to find
the breath to speak.
“Hey Daria.” Trent said sounding as laid back as ever.
“Hey Trent.” Daria smiled before waving him in regaining the
missing ability quickly.
“Janey ordered me back to Lawndale and I figured I would stop here and
find out why.” Trent said as he set down his bags and cases.
“You want to hear it from her or will I do?” Daria sighed.
“Talk.” Trent said as he plopped down on the couch.
“Quinn’s back.” Daria started and she saw his eyes flicker
for a brief second but his body language changed drastically.
“Is she ok?” Trent asked carefully.
“Trent, why didn’t you tell me you dated my sister?” Daria
said trying not to meet his eyes now.
“I didn’t think it mattered.” Trent said lamely.
“It doesn’t but at the same time it does.” Daria admitted.
“It began and ended pretty fast. I honestly didn’t think it was
related or anyone’s business.” Trent said picking at a stuffed duck
that Cleo had left on the couch before tossing it to another chair.
“Well, she’s back and that’s why Jane called you.”
Daria stated hoping beyond hope that Jane would walk in the door any second.
“Ok, Why?” Trent asked.
“I’m going to stop dragging this out. I’m sorry to be so
blunt but here it is. Quinn got pregnant when you two were together and
that’s why she ran off. She kept the baby, it’s a little girl named
Cleo. Congratulations you’re a daddy. Their out with my parents now and
for most of the day, probably.” Daria said staring at a spot on the floor
while she spoke.
“Oh.” Trent said looking like a train had just hit him.
“I talked her into moving here with Cleo and Jane talked her into telling
you about the baby.” Daria said gently.
“Quinn had a baby.” Trent said.
“Yes.” Daria answered.
“My baby.” Trent moaned.
“Yes.” Daria answered again.
“And she took off to have the kid and didn’t bother to tell
anyone.” Trent said getting to his feet slowly.
“Ya but she’s back now and she willing to give you a chance to be a
father to Cleo.” Daria explained not liking the look on Trent’s
face.
“I need to take care of a few things. What time will they be back?”
Trent asked.
“Somewhere after 6 pm but maybe you should hang out, get some
sleep.” Daria answered feeling more than a little nervous.
“Good, I’ll be back by then. It’s alright for me to leave my
stuff here right?” Trent said.
“Sure.” Daria said as Trent left the apartment without looking at
her.
:That stung more than a little. I think I would have preferred it was Tom.
Scratch that, I know I would have preferred it was Tom. I'm over Tom.: Daria
thought as she relocked her door.
Daria turned and with a quick scream punched the wall next to the door
repeatedly until she couldn’t feel her hand anymore.
She slid to the floor leaning against the door as she regained her composure.
“Great, serves me right if I broke my hand.” She said as she
climbed to her feet and headed into the bathroom adjourned to her bedroom and
ran her hand under the cold tap water while she poured disinfectant on her torn
knuckles. She gently flexed her fingers and determined nothing was broken but
it certainly going to be sore for quite a few days.
Daria finished wrapping her hand and took two of the pain pills she saved after
breaking her wrist the last time she drove.
She crawled into her bed and pulled her blanket up around her trying to hide
from the thoughts and feelings that the last few days were bringing forth.
Quinn, Cleo and now Trent all at once returning or entering her life and she
couldn’t get a single picture out of her mind. It was a painting she had
seen, a man standing on an empty beach while a tidal wave towered above, at the
very moment of collapse.
The picture wouldn’t leave her mind and it pushed any peace from finding
her as she tried to sleep.
Jane returned to the apartment before anyone else and after seeing
Trent’s bags and locating Daria hiding under her blanket, Jane decided to
join her and after failing to gain Daria’s attention started to rub her
best friend’s feet.
“Damn you Jane.” Daria said from under the blanket.
“You don’t spend 5 or 6 years around someone without learning their
weak points.” Jane joked as she skillfully worked on the small feet.
They talked without really talking about anything not related to what was
happening and Jane knew it wasn’t the time to tease Daria about Trent. :I
forgot about this part. I knew Daria always had a thing for Trent even after
Tom but I thought she was over it after he stayed here last summer.: After
a few hours of talking trying to cheer her up and failing Jane decided to go
out and pickup some takeout for dinner so when Quinn returned with their
parents and Cleo they could rest and deal directly with Trent when he returned.
Daria had managed to make it to the living room when her parents came in both
sporting, World’s great grandparent T-shirts and Cleo was wired on an
unknown amount of junk food and sweets and bounced like a hyper spider monkey
all around the apartment. She was looking like she had just been given
everything in at least three stores worth of clothes and toys. Quinn quickly
took one of her pills and grabbed an ice pack from the freezer and joined Daria
on the couch as their parents had Cleo model the new clothing and show off the
toys.
“Our parents don’t seem to believe in boundaries concerning
spoiling my daughter any more than you do Mrs. Ice cream for breakfast.”
Quinn whispered to Daria
“Their just excited.” Daria couldn’t believe she was
defending her parents of all people.
“They just made it impossible for me to wow Cleo for Christmas this year.
It's in a few weeks.” Quinn whispered looking tired.
“Don’t worry, I’ll give you my credit card and that will give
you a bit of buying power that the parentals don’t have.” Daria
said realizing what it implied but hoping Quinn would take it as intended.
“Thank you and I don’t care if it takes me the rest of my life but
I will pay you back.” Quinn sighed.
‘Don’t worry about it, Mom was right. I have more money than I know
what to do with.” Daria admitted.
“I just hate being a charity.” Quinn answered.
“Trent’s in town, he left to take care of something but he promised
he would be back after I told him about Cleo.” Daria said hoping that
Quinn would be able to handle the extra stress.
“Oh god, I was hoping for a few days before I had to face him.”
Quinn said and leaned against her sister and felt Daria wrap her arm around her
and hold her almost exactly like Quinn did when Cleo was sad.
Trent arrived with an almost musical knock that Daria and Quinn both recognized
and Quinn held her hand out stopping anyone else from moving toward the door
and crossed the room herself and opened the door and stood staring at the
father of her child.
“Hey Quinn.” Trent said and she was relieved to see that he looked
as nervous as she felt.
“Hiya Trent.” Quinn smiled.
“Umm, Can I talk to you in the hall?” Trent said looking at the
floor shuffling his feet.
“Sure.” Quinn said and she stepped out into the hall and pulled the
door shut behind her without looking back at her parents who she knew would
object.
Daria had to fight the urge to join them in the hall and with her parents
keeping Cleo distracted, she could have but something kept her in the apartment
for 5 minutes until the a scream came from the hall.
:This can’t be happening. The guy I spent years crushing on has a kid
with my baby sister and now he’s back and wants to talk to her alone.
They’re going to come back in and announce that their going to give it
another try. Why is this hurting me so much? Trent’s not mine, never was
and I want Quinn to be happy and Cleo needs her dad and this will give her that
chance. I don’t know if I can do this, standby watch them together. I
really am a selfish bitch.: Daria thought as she stared at the door trying
to picture what was happening on the other side.
“TRENT WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?” Jane voice bellowed
before the door flew open and she pushed both Trent and Quinn into the
apartment.
Daria jumped to her feet seconds before Jake and Helen grabbed Cleo and backed
into the kitchen.
“What’s wrong with you?” Trent started.
“I told you to get a job not this.” Jane yelled.
“Jane calm down.” Quinn said looking almost amused.
“What’s happening?” Daria demanded.
“I’m trying to do right by my daughter.” Trent said defiantly
and pulled a small box from his pocket and knelt before Quinn.
:No, no.: Daria screamed within her mind.
“Trent get up.” Jane ordered.
“No, Quinn I care about you and I want to be the father for my little
girl, Will you marry me?” Trent asked almost pleadingly to Quinn.
Helen gasped and Jake wrapped an arm around his wife as they held Cleo as
everyone watched their youngest daughter’s proposal.
Quinn looked down at Trent fondly and reached her hand over and ran her fingers
through his scraggly hair.
“Please Quinn, we can be a family for our daughter.” Trent smiled.
“Yes we can.” Quinn said and she saw Daria’s eyes and heard
the sharp intake of breath from her sister.
“I don’t love you and you don’t love me but we can both love
Cleo. We can do that without being together.” Quinn continued as she
knelt in front of him and incased the ring box with her hands and gently closed
it.
“I want my daughter to have a normal family.” Trent said strongly.
“Then I will ask you one question and you have to swear to tell the
truth. Can you do that?” Quinn asked moving her hands to his head as he
nodded yes.
“My answer to your offer will be the same as your answer to this. Could
you ever love me as much as her?” Quinn asked turning his head to face
Daria.
Daria backed out of Quinn’s line of sight but she heard her sister fall
onto the couch and saw Trent’s inability to pull his eyes away from her.
“I thought so.” Quinn said calmly.
“You can still be a part of your daughter’s life. You can still be
her father and help raise and support her but you and me never made much sense
but it was nice while it lasted.” Quinn said kissing the top of
Trent’s head before standing and turning to look at her parents and
daughter.
“Cleo, sweetie. Come meet your Daddy.” Quinn said wiping the wet
from her eyes.
Helen let Cleo down and the child ran to her mother and looked around her legs
at Trent.
“Hi Cleo.” Trent said looking at his daughter.
“Your eyes painted like mine.” Cleo said pointing at his eyes.
“Yep.” Trent said and held out his hand to her.
Cleo bypassed his hand and ran straight into his chest and hugged him tightly.
They held each other and Quinn sat with them smiling and crying as father and
daughter became family.
Jane brought the takeout food in from where she dropped it after walking up on
Trent’s first attempt at asking Quinn to marry him. Jake and Helen helped
her salvage as much as possible and the now extended family started eating with
the singular exception of Daria who had retreated into her room and now cried
off from joining everyone.
Quinn entered her room and crawled onto the bed and sat next to her sister.
“I’m sorry.” Quinn said.
“For what?” Daria asked looking surprised.
“I knew you had a crush on him for a while in High School and I knew he
was carrying a torch for you but it wasn’t until afterwards I knew how
much he loved you. I didn’t think you were in love with him too.”
Quinn admitted.
“I didn’t think I felt this way about him. I thought he was a phase
that I was long over.” Daria replied.
“I think you should talk to him. I’m thinking about having Jane
crash with me tonight, just to start getting used to it, in case she ever needs
a bed buddy when you or Mark aren’t around.” Quinn said casually.
“What? You think I should invite Trent in for the night and have wild sex
with him.” Daria groaned and buried her face in a pillow.
“He’s rather good at it if I remember correctly.” Quinn said
then blushed brightly.
Daria groaned louder.
“Sorry, that didn’t help did it.” Quinn laughed.
“No I’ve always wanted to date my sister’s ex who happens to
be the father of her child. Maybe we can go on the Springer show afterwards and
compare notes on his performance.” Daria smirked.
“Now you’re being silly.” Quinn couldn’t help but
smile.
“He still makes me feel like that 16 year old girl that had a crush on
him.” Daria sighed painfully.
“Every time he kissed me, it was you in his mind.” Quinn said and
climbed off the bed and left the room.
Helen invaded her room next and sat on the foot of her bed as she stared at the
sheets.
“This must be very difficult for you.” Helen stated and Daria
fought to control her expression.
“I know that this isn’t what you expected but it was pretty clear
that Trent just wants to be with his daughter and while he is fond of Quinn,
he’s not in love with her. No one would think less of you if you started
dating him. I think you would enjoy the complete chaos it would create at
family gathering when it came time to explain it to people.” Helen said
with a small grin.
“I haven’t thought of that. I’m just really confused at the
moment.” Daria admitted.
“If this didn’t confuse you I would be frightened.” Helen
said smiling at her oldest girl.
“You just want more grandkids.” Daria joked.
“Well it is rather addicting and to be honest your life style does give
you the ability to have kids without them greatly affecting your work.”
Helen replied.
“True.” Daria conceded.
“But I can wait for a little while but your father seems determined to
have a son-in-law and since Quinn turned Trent down, Jake is pushing for him to
talk to you.” Helen laughed.
“Great now I’m a pity date or marriage.” Daria groaned
shoving her face back into a pillow so she didn’t hear her mother leave
the room.
The apartment was being shut down as everyone was going to bed when Daria came
out of her bathroom to find Trent sitting on her bed.
“Trent!” Daria said and had to fight the urge to cover up even
though she was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
“Hi Daria.” Trent said in his laid back manner.
“Can I help you with something?” Daria asked.
“Janey said I was supposed to come in here and talk to you before I could
go to bed or she was going to remove my tattoos with a belt sander.”
Trent sighed.
“Well I know who I need to kill first thing in the morning.” Daria
almost growled.
“Stay on her left side, she’s a sucker for a south paw.”
Trent said and laid back on Daria’s bed.
“I’ll remember that, thanks for the lips…I mean
advice.” Daria said blushing at the slip.
“Cool.” Trent said seeming not to notice.
“Umm Trent.” Daria tried, wanting to get over whatever Jane had put
him up to.
Trent sat up on the bed and stared at her for several minutes.
“What?” Daria asked.
“Did you know I had the biggest crush on you back in Lawndale?”
Trent asked.
“No, I didn’t or I would have been sneaking into your room every
time I stayed the night with Jane.” Daria said not realizing she had
spoken aloud until the words were out of her mouth causing another blush.
“Good one Daria.” Trent said and smiled.
“I had a crush on you too.” Daria said taking a seat on her bed
just a few feet away from Trent.
“I’m not sorry I hooked up with Quinn.” Trent stated firmly.
“Neither am I.” Daria said meeting his eyes for the first time.
“I think I want to … is it supposed to be this hard.” Trent
said looking confused.
“Yes, I think it is.” Daria said moving closer to him.
“This might make things really weird.” Trent said moving a little
closer to her as well.
“Weird is good.” Daria smirked.
“I like weird.” Trent replied.
"Weird can work." Daria laughed.
"Maybe we could talk for a while." Trent returned the laugh.
“Shut up and kiss me or get off my bed.” Daria demanded.
“Ok, are you sure Janey won’t mind us … I mean you two being
...” Trent started.
“Look this is the last time I'm saying this. We’re not gay. I ..AM
..NOT ..GAY.” Daria said firmly pulling Trent to her and kissing him
deeply.
“If you say so.” Trent smiled between kisses.
“You aren’t sleeping here.” Daria declared.
Trent stopped and pulled back from the kisses looking confused again.
“Don’t try those puppy dog eyes on me. Kissing is one thing,
I’m going to need some time to address this in my head before your getting
anything else so too bad.” Daria said folding her arms across her chest.
“That’s cool, I mean yesterday I was a bum now I’m a bum with
a daughter. It’s heavy.” Trent agreed.
“I’m an Aunt and I am standing at the doorway of something that
will freak a lot of people out.” Daria said not realizing they had both
laid back on the bed.
“I gotta get a job.” Trent sighed.
“Yes.” Daria almost laughed.
"You think Quinn would hire me to babysit Cleo." Trent laughed and
then coughed.
"No." Daria sighed.
“Maybe I could teach playing or work at a music store or
something.” Trent said.
“Maybe, I do really like you Trent, if this is just a game or fun for
you, please make it quick and painless.” Daria took her turn to sigh.
“It’s not.” Trent said softly.
“Quinn acts like she’s going to be ok with this.” Daria said
to fill the silence.
“ Janey is pushing for this. Something about me having the thickest piece
of concrete in the universe in my head.” Trent coughed.
“My parents like you, which should be a bad sign.” Daria laughed
gently.
“Whoa that’s a new one.” Trent said surprised.
“It could be worse I guess.” Daria mused.
“How?” Trent asked.
“You could have knocked up my mother.” Daria teased.
“She is a very attractive older woman.” Trent teased back.
“If you ever expect to get anywhere with me never ever say that or
anything remotely like that again.” Daria warned.
“Deal.” Trent smirked.
Daria suddenly was awakened by a heavy object crawling up her body and laying
on her chest.
She reached for her glasses before realizing she had fallen asleep with them
on.
Looking down she saw Cleo had crawled into her bed and was now laying on her
chest.
“I forgot Mommy doesn’t need to get up, she’s sleeping with
Aunt Jane.” Cleo explained as she shifted around on top on Daria, coming
to rest with her head over Daria’s heart and her feet propped up on
Trent’s bare back before falling asleep seconds later.
:Trent’s bare back, Damn and double damn.: Daria thought unwilling
to move the blanket to check her own state of dress or Trent’s and unable
to remember anything that had occurred after a brief but heated conversion on
the differences between entertainers and musicians. She laid her head back down
and put her glasses on the nightstand.
:I can start pretending this didn’t happen in the morning.: Daria
though as she went back to sleep.
Chapter 6 Settling In
Quinn woke up around 8 am and stretched in the bed careful not to hit the
sleeping form of Jane and blushed when she re-noticed the complete and utter
lack of clothes on said form. She slid off the bed and went into the adjourning
bathroom and climbed into the shower after taking one of her pain pills.
:Daria should have warned me that Jane sleeps in the nude, no wonder
everyone thinks their a couple. Still it was kinda of nice having someone to
cuddle with even if it was a naked woman.: Quinn thought as she quickly
showered and started drying off before getting dressed. A whistle turned her
attention to the bedroom where Jane was sitting up looking at her through the
open doorway.
“I thought you were asleep.” Quinn blushed down to her toes.
“I was until you started a strip tease and then did a shower scene better
than any I’ve ever seen.” Jane laughed.
“I’m not used to anyone besides me and Cleo being around.”
Quinn admitted as she sat on the bed and pulled on her shoes.
“It’s not a problem, I’m just giving you a hard time. So you
haven’t dated since Cleo was born?” Jane asked as she grabbed her
clothes and walked bare ass into the bathroom and left the door cracked open.
“Once but it didn’t work out. He kept getting jealous of the time I
spent with Cleo so I sent him packing.” Quinn sighed.
“I seem to remember there being a line of guys that wanted to date
you.” Jane said honestly.
“Well not too many guys our age want to play house with someone
else’s kid.” Quinn said shaking her head as she stood up.
“Not too many want to with their own kids.” Jane agreed.
“Last night wasn’t bad so if you need a place to crash I’m ok
with it but no wandering hands.” Quinn laughed.
“You’re the one that grabbed my ass.” Jane defended.
“I turned over and it was there, there was no lingering.” Quinn
said as Jane came out of the bathroom.
“Wait till I tell Daria you tried to make out with me.” Jane
teased.
“Don’t you dare!” Quinn said shocked.
“Relax, let’s go get some breakfast and then announce our
engagement to your folks.” Jane continued.
“Jane I will kill you and Daria will help me get away with it.”
Quinn said as she pouted her way into the living room.
She walked to Cleo’s room and went inside and wasn’t to surprised
to find the bed empty so she checked the room before heading into the living
room.
A quick search told her that Cleo wasn’t in the living room or kitchen or
her own bedroom and that only left one room.
“What’s going on?” Jane asked as she pulled down several
bowls for cereal.
“I can’t find Cleo and there’s no way she could reach the top
locks or chain on the front door so that just leaves one place.” Quinn
said pointing toward Daria’s room.
Quinn and Jane approached the slightly opened door and peeked in and both
oh’ed and ah’ed at the painfully cute scene on the bed.
Daria and Trent were sharing a pillow with their bodies angling away from each
other and Cleo slept between them looking peaceful.
“Get a camera.” Quinn demanded and Jane dashed to grab hers.
Jane returned and started snapping pictures with a modern digital camera until
the giggling from her and Quinn woke Cleo up. The little girl sat up and smiled
at her mother and held out her arms to be hugged.
“Take one more picture and while I’m sure they will find your body
they will never be able to identify it.” Daria said without looking up.
Trent stirred in his sleep and looked around and quickly covered himself with a
sheet after realizing the number of women in the room with him.
“Since when are you shy Mr. Walk around in a pair of boxers?” Jane
scolded.
“And what are you doing with my sister; it seems like just last night you
were on one knee proposing to me?” Quinn asked sweetly.
“That was last night.” Jane informed her.
“You cad.” Quinn said and tossed his shirt over to him.
“Wait a minute, he’s still wearing pants.” Jane said and
looked disgusted.
“Daria, please tell me you were worried about him catching a cold and you
made him put his pants back on.” Quinn sighed as she tickled her
daughter.
“Nothing happened.” Trent said.
“Funny I didn’t know you wore lipstick.” Jane said as she
wiped a tissue on his face.
“And it matches Daria’s perfectly.” Quinn added holding it up
to Daria’s face.
“If Daddy marries Aunt Daria will she be my stop mom?” Cleo asked.
“Step.” Jane smiled.
“Yes she would.” Quinn laughed.
“Who said anything about married?” Daria sat up and grabbed for her
glasses.
“Well seeing as he just knocked you up I guess you’ll have to get
married.” Quinn teased.
“Nothing like that happened.” Daria said.
“Then why are you afraid to move the blanket then.” Jane said as
she lifted the side of the blanket.
“I am fully dressed.” Daria said and slid off the bed with the
blanket still wrapped around herself.
Quinn and Jane looked at each other and after plopping Cleo on top of Trent
they dived for the blanket as Daria tried to retreat into the bathroom.
Quinn managed to get a handhold but Daria continued onward dragging her sister
until Jane latched onto the end and skillfully freed the blanket as Daria
dashed into the bathroom.
“Wait a minute … she was dressed.” Jane said scratching her
head.
“You didn’t notice the back of her neck. He likes to work up the
back.” Quinn said pointing to Trent who was trying to hide his blush by
playing with Cleo.
“You left a hickey on her!” Jane said smiling to Trent poking him
in the shoulder.
“Chill out, nothing happened, just some kissing.” Trent replied.
“Mommy and Aunt Daria wrestle some more.” Cleo laughed when Daria
came out of the bathroom.
“No more.” Daria said sternly pointing at Quinn and Jane who had
taken up seats on the bed.
“Will you get over it already.” Jane said looking annoyed.
“I agree. Daria it’s really not a big deal.” Quinn laughed.
“I’m a little freaked out. You have to know how that feels Quinn. A
lot of stuff happening all at once.” Daria tried for a little sisterly
support.
“I know but this is a good thing.” Quinn said and hugged Daria
gently.
“He’s Cleo’s father.” Daria said frowning.
“Yes and you’re her Aunt and my sister. Relax and let what will
happen, happen as it will.” Quinn said and squeezed Daria tightly.
“So tell the truth is he any good.” Jane teased.
“I’m sitting right here.” Trent said still playing with Cleo.
“Oh just smile and look pretty.” Quinn laughed.
They dragged Daria out of her bedroom and Helen spent the entire morning
smirking at Daria while Jake gave up after breakfast when Cleo interrupted his
free milk speech he was giving Trent using the only milk jug in the house as a
prop preventing Trent from adding it to his cereal. She stood tapping her foot
looking up at her grandfather with a look far too old for a two year old.
“Play nice or no ice cream.” Cleo declared after Jake surrendered
the milk to Trent.
“But I like ice cream.” Jake complained.
Daria spent the day trying to convince Quinn to sign up for any classes she
wanted at Raft or BFAC or any of the local colleges.
“Daria, I’m not sure I want to go to college anymore.” Quinn
sighed.
“Think of it like this, you go to school then you can get a better job
and pay me back faster.” Daria said firmly.
“Damn you Daria.” Quinn smiled.
Jane decided to do a portrait of Cleo with Trent and Quinn. Trent complained at
being forced into a suit so it took Helen almost 5 minutes to convince him it
was his idea to wear one but Daria decided she might have to buy him a few
after seeing how he looked in a spare one of her father’s.
Helen and Jake took the time to make a few calls to ensure their respective
families got the news.
“No mom I don’t think you need to come take over for Quinn,
she’s been taking care of Cleo for a long time. No we’re not going
to be raising her. No she’s not moving in with us but it would be fine if
she did. I think you might want to wait before you come to visit. Well she’s
staying with Daria and you know how poorly you get on with Daria.” Jake
said before making a quick exit from the phone call.
“Yes Rita, Quinn is back and she had a baby, a little girl. She’s
brilliant and so gorgeous. The father, YES we knew who the father is.
Daria’s boyfriend. That’s what I said. Daria is helping out with
the money side of things; you know her book is still on the best seller list
for the 5th week. You need to go, I understand. Give Erin my love.” Helen
said smirking through the entire call.
“God I needed that. Your grandmother sounded like she was dancing with
joy at the news she was a great grandmother and I really got to rub
Rita’s nose in it.” Helen said to the room.
“You didn’t take this kind of pleasure in it when you called
Amy.” Daria replied.
“She was just so supportive and happy for us. I couldn’t bring
myself to try to nail her.” Helen sighed.
“I thought I was the one that was supposed to take pleasure in freaking
people out with the fact that I’m with the father of my sister’s
kid.” Daria smirked.
“Ok so I’m enjoying in almost as you will.” Helen admitted.
“I didn’t even know we were dating yet.” Daria joked.
Helen raised an eyebrow at Daria that spoke volumes.
“God mom, I didn’t sleep with him. Ok I slept with him but all we
did was sleep … and kiss but that’s it.” Daria sighed.
“Daria you’re a grown woman now. I am fairly certain you
aren’t a virgin anymore.” Helen sighed.
“Two guys, I might as well be.” Daria answered.
“Trent.” Helen said pointing to where he was standing for the
painting.
“Not yet, honestly Mom. I’m more than a little nervous about being
with a guy that was with my sister.” Daria admitted honestly.
“I don’t think he’s going to compare you two.” Helen
dismissed her concern with a wave.
“If we do sleep together then I’ll be up to three guys, the same as
Quinn. That’s more than a little weird.” Daria pressed.
“At least neither of you stole the other’s boyfriend or husband and
I happen to know that 3 men for a college senior is a low number.” Helen
said patting her eldest daughter on the shoulder.
“We haven’t stolen a man from each other yet.” Daria smirked.
“Quinn would never do that to you.” Helen assured strongly.
“I know.” Daria smiled and watched as Quinn made faces at Jane when
ever Cleo wasn’t looking.
“Next I want to do one with Quinn, Helen and Daria with Cleo.” Jane
said as she finished the painting and setup a new canvas.
Quinn groaned as Trent happily moved away and took off the suit coat only to be
caught by Jake.
“Get changed my man. We need to go get a tree and some
decorations.” Jake said smiling.
“That’s cool.” Trent said and ducked into the guest bathroom
to change.
“I object to being left out of the whole bring a dead tree in my house
decision making process.” Daria called as the two men left.
“No you don’t.” Jane laughed.
“But I wanna go with them.” Daria whined with a smile.
“No you don’t.” Quinn giggled.
“OK, I just don’t want to sit here for a few hours while Jane
paints horns on us.” Daria complained.
“Do I need to whack you?” Jane said brandishing a wooden
paintbrush.
Jake and Trent return hours later covered in snow and dragging a monster of a
tree behind them.
“Oh god Jake did you buy the biggest one they had.” Helen sighed.
“No, you have to have a pickup truck if you want to get a 12 footer, he
said. Damn rules and regulations.” Jake said shaking his fist toward the
sky.
“Geez relax Dad. You don’t want to have another heart attack do
you?” Quinn said as she handed her father and Trent cups of hot cocoa.
“Cool this has the little marshmallows and everything.” Trent said
as he finished dragging the tree into the living room.
“Does Santa come to your house too?” Cleo asked as the men stood
the tree up and mounted it on a stand.
“Every year.” Jane answered.
“Daria when did you want to go out, tomorrow right.” Quinn said
smiling.
“Tomorrow is good; my parents can watch Cleo while the four of us go out
and shop.” Daria said.
“Umm Daria remind me to talk to you later.” Trent said as he paused
in the decorating and looked to where Daria was sitting on the counter.
“No problem.” Daria said knowing what that topic would be.
“Look what Grandpa got.” Jake said happily as he held up several
bundles of mistletoe.
“I sense turmoil and trouble, I like it.” Jane said laughing.
“The only trouble will be if Jane tries to get me to sit for another
painting in the next 6 months.” Quinn warned.
“I just want to capture this brief respite in the constant battle of
Morgendorffers.” Jane smirked.
“I think a truce has been called.” Daria sighed.
The group gathered around the table sitting on anything that would allow them
to reach the table as Jake served up bowls of steaming chili for dinner.
Daria had to admit it warmed her almost as much as sharing a seat with Trent
and even Cleo managed to eat down the meal.
“I expected hotter from someone who came from Texas.” Jane mused.
“I’m not allowed spicy food. The doctor’s say it might
…” Jake started before a glare from Helen stopped him.
“So you four are going out shopping tomorrow, good. I can spoil my
granddaughter without interference.” Helen smiled.
“Just for a bit and no ice cream for breakfast.” Quinn agreed.
“No just chocolate cake.” Helen said sounding almost serious.
“So how long are you two in town for?” Daria asked from
Trent’s lap.
“A few more days but we will be back for Christmas and New year’s.
Expect us to be making regular visits to check on our daughters and
granddaughter. Don’t look at me like that Jane, since your brother
decided he wants to be part of the family that includes you so expect us to be
going over every choice you make from now on and I want to meet this Mark
fellow your dating.” Helen stated.
“Ok but Daria filled him with all kind of horror stories about you two so
he might be skittish.” Jane laughed out.
“Why do I believe that.” Helen said giving Daria an evil eye.
Daria came out of her shower that evening to find Jane waiting for her.
“Hey Amiga.” Jane said as she sprawled out on the bed.
“So you haven’t forsaken me for Quinn.” Daria smiled.
“Figure I would ask. It’s your choice. Trent can crash here with
you or that cot I have across the hall.” Jane shrugged.
“Damn it Jane I’m not sure I’m ready yet.” Daria fumed.
“Relax a little. You are way to tense. Do you need a back massage?”
Jane offered.
“I could use one.” Daria said and quickly crawled on to the bed and
removed her T-shirt as she laid out face down on her bed.
“Me and my big mouth.” Jane chuckled.
“Best 15 hundred bucks I ever spent, sending you to those classes.”
Daria almost purred as Jane started working on her back.
“I talked to Quinn about Trent.” Jane said and let it hang.
“And?” Daria pressed.
“She’s really ok with this. She’s afraid you two might not
hook up even though you both want to because of her and Cleo.” Jane said.
“And what do you think?” Daria asked.
“I think you should have gotten with him back in High School. I’ve
never seen you respond like this with anyone, not even that night you and me
… you know. You’re in love with him and it’s pretty clear
that my clueless brother is awake for the first time and he’s in love
with you. Plus Quinn doesn’t hog the covers as much as you do.”
Jane ended with a joke.
“Anything I need to know about?” Daria almost whispered.
“No, but it was kinda of nice last night. Not in a rip each other’s
clothes off way, you know I’m serious about Mark.” Jane fumbled.
“Ok but if it changes let me know, I don’t want another Becky
accident.” Daria stated firmly.
“I don’t think Quinn’s that way but I promise if anything
happens, you will be the first to know.” Jane promised.
“Why don’t you go tell Trent to finish my massage then tell Quinn
he better be as good as she said.” Daria said with a sigh as the blush
covered her entire back.
Jane dashed out of the room and moments later Daria felt much larger and
stronger hands on her back gently working the muscles almost as expertly as
Jane’s had.
She heard the door close as the light turned out and allowed herself to enjoy
the skillful and rough hands.
Chapter 7 Old Friends
Daria leaned against the wall and watched the Quinn and Jane pick through
another store looking for more perfect gifts for everyone. Trent leaned against
the wall next to her and cleared his throat politely.
“I wanted to thank you for the cash loan. I knew what I want to get
everyone but it was going to be just about impossible. Now all I have to do is
come up with what to get you.” Trent joked.
“Anything will be nice.” Daria blushed.
“I don’t suppose you want an engagement ring.” Trent sighed.
“Not yet but … you might want to hold on … I mean later
… maybe, if you ask.” Daria stumbled.
“Cool, I’m not mad about last night, just so you know.” Trent
lowered his voice so no one else could hear.
“I’m just not ready yet but if you stick around a while I will
be.” Daria blushed brightly.
“We had fun and I’m not going anywhere. I can wait, but can I still
crash with you.” Trent blushed himself.
“I think we could work out some kind of trade, massages for bed
space.” Daria felt like giggling.
“Really cool.” Trent said and he turned and pointed toward Jane and
Quinn who were returning with arms loaded down with bags.
“OH MY GOD QUINN!!!” A female voice rang out.
Daria turned toward the sound to see a short haired brunette running toward
Quinn and Jane.
The woman grabbed Quinn and almost lifted her off the floor with the monstrous
hug she locked onto the taller redhead.
“I thought you were dead.” The woman said tearfully.
“Easy Stacy, I’m not dead but if you keep squeezing me I might be
in a few minutes.” Quinn gasped.
Daria hurried over just as Stacy released Quinn beaming that impossible smile
at all of them.
“Daria, I’ve been meaning to get in touch since I moved
here.” Stacy said as she hugged her.
“Ummm, that’s nice Stacy.” Daria mumbled.
“Where have you been?” Stacy turned and scolded Quinn.
“Georgia or hell, I’m not sure there’s a difference.”
Quinn answered.
“Why would you go there?” Stacy said looking surprised.
“Long story. What’s been up with you?” Quinn dodged.
“Finally getting back to my second year of school. I got interrupted
there for a while.” Stacy admitted.
“Mind if I ask.” Jane probed.
“I had a little boy and he’s old enough now for me to get back to
school.” Stacy said and pulled a small photo album out of her purse and
started showing off pictures of a blond hair toddler.
“His father is pretty worthless but his parents pay the child support
every month. They come see him every few weeks, sometimes they even bring Ted
along for the trip if he’s in the country.” Stacy sighed.
“Ted, as in our ex-classmate home schooled Ted.” Jane said clearly
shocked.
“Yep, funny those old fashion ideals didn’t seem to include not
jumping into bed with me or push him to take care of his child. He ran off to
Mexico to feed starving people or whatever the week he found out I was knocked
up. His folks are nice and they really help out. L.Q’s almost a year old
now.” Stacy said proudly.
“He’s really cute, this Ted guy sounds like a real jerk.”
Trent mumbled.
“He just needs to grow up is all.” Stacy said blushing.
“L.Q.” Jane mused.
“His nickname, well the nickname for his nickname. Little Quinn.”
Stacy said stunning the four of them for several seconds.
“You named your son, Quinn.” Daria stated recovering before anyone
else.
“Yep. Sorry but I really like that name and you really helped make High
School bearable for me.” Stacy apologized to Quinn.
“That’s great Stacy. Are you living in Boston too?” Quinn
asked.
“Ya.” Stacy nodded with a smile.
The group started to the checkout lanes.
“I had a little girl myself.” Quinn said to Stacy.
“You had a baby. No way.” Stacy said and Daria almost saw the smoke
pouring out of the girl’s head.
“Ya, that’s why I took off. Her name is Cleo. Daria dragged us to
live with her and I’m thinking about going back to school myself.”
Quinn sighed as she pulled her billfold out of her pocket and pulled out a
picture of Cleo.
“That’s great, She’s so cute, they have a fashion program at
Boston University and they have enough classes I can arrange them around
working and L.Q.” Stacy gushed.
“I’ll have to remember that when I start looking after the
holidays.” Quinn nodded.
“What are you doing for Christmas?” Stacy asked suddenly.
“Whatever Daria wants I guess.” Quinn laughed.
“The Clintons can’t make it this year so if you want to get
together or something we’ll be free.” Stacy said smiling as the
group paid for their items and started to the parking lot.
“I think we could fit another high chair at the table if you wanted to
come over.” Daria offered.
“We could catch up and let the kids play.” Quinn added.
“Great.” Stacy beamed.
“What about your folks, won’t they be upset they can’t visit
Little Quinn.” Trent asked.
Stacy got quiet before sighing and answering.
“My parents disowned me when I dropped out of school to keep the baby.
They changed their phone number and now they send back any letters I send them
unopened. I hope that if they find out I’m back in school and the baby
didn’t ruin my life, it will help them deal.” Stacy explained.
“Where are you staying?” Quinn asked wanting to change to subject.
“I have an apartment on Mylar street. It’s not far from here. My
roommate helps out with some of the quick babysitting like today.” Stacy
answered.
“That’s just a couple of streets from us.” Jane informed
Quinn who hadn’t gotten to know any of the local streets yet.
“Daria, you have to sign Total Night for me. I’ve read it at least
eight times.” Stacy said turning to Daria who was walking with Trent.
“Sure.” Daria smiled.
“I have to go, motherhood calls.” Stacy said and quickly exchanged
address and phone numbers with Quinn.
“I can’t believe Stacy is a Mom.” Jane chuckled.
“I can’t believe Ted ran off on her.” Daria said remembering
the polite friendly boy she had almost been involved with.
“You don’t mind her hanging out at the apartment or anything do
you?” Quinn asked.
“Of course not, if it was Sandi maybe but Stacy was always a
sweetheart.” Daria dismissed the question with a wave.
They made their way to the car and Jane drove them back toward the apartment
house and Quinn noticed something as they pulled into the garage.
“Why aren’t there ever any other cars here?” Quinn asked.
Jane snorted and Daria smiled before answering.
“Because besides us there are only three other apartments being rented
out.” Daria replied.
“Why, this is a great place?” Quinn pressed.
“Because your sister won’t rent out any of the empty
apartments.” Jane laughed.
Quinn stared at Daria as they got out of the car and started unloading the
mountains of bags.
“You own the building!” Quinn said understanding something now.
“Yes.” Daria answered.
“How rich are you?” Quinn asked nervously.
“Pretty rich.” Daria answered.
“Daria.” Quinn said clearly wanting an answer.
“She was worth about 2 million before her last book got published.”
Jane answered punching Daria gently on the shoulder.
“Wow. So not Mom and Dad rich but really rich.” Quinn gasped.
“Which is why I have nothing better to do than spend money on you and
Cleo. Last year I started sending people to classes just to get them out of my
hair. Jane and Trent here have been to massage class, first aid, defense
driving, cooking and a few more I can’t remember right now. I made more
on the advance for one of my books than Mom and Dad made last year. I
don’t care if I am rich or just skirting by, I need to feel like I doing
something for the people I care about.” Daria explained.
“Well you just about have me convinced to go back to school so that
should set you back some.” Quinn smiled nudging Daria with her shoulder
as they started up elevators.
“Good and you could mention to Stacy that there are a few apartments for
rent in our building and give her my business manager’s number. Just in
case she’s looking for a new place.” Daria said with a serious look
on her face.
“Why?” Quinn asked confused.
“Well her being here is going to encourage you to go to school and give
someone for Cleo to play with and well I remember how tight money would get
sometimes being away from home, before my first book got published.”
Daria shrugged.
“That’s nice of you.” Quinn smiled.
“She just wants another person to drive her around.” Jane smirked.
“There is that.” Daria admitted.
They unloaded all the items into Jane’s studio across the hall from the
apartment and Daria had to laugh at the outlandish ways her companions tried to
hide certain bags from each other.
“Jane if you take one more step over here I’ll make you sleep on
the floor tonight.” Quinn warned.
“But I want to see what you got for Daria.” Jane tried.
“Ya, right. Do you really expect me to believe that seeing as you helped
me pick it out?” Quinn sighed.
“Fine, what did you get me?” Jane demanded.
“Back off art girl or I tell Cleo you kicked a puppy.” Quinn
threatened.
“That’s just wrong.” Jane pouted.
“Back off sister of mine or I give you another song as a gift.”
Trent said as Jane started moving toward him.
“I’m sure Jane doesn’t really want to ruin Christmas for
everyone.” Daria stated firmly.
“You people are no fun.” Jane sighed as she headed over to the
apartment.
“Quickly move anything for her into the storage closet.” Daria said
pointing to one of her bags as she tossed a key to Quinn.
“I take it she’ll be back over here first chance she has to
plunder.” Quinn laughed.
“You’ve met her right.” Daria replied.
“I forgot to check with you about what to get Mom and Dad so I got them a
few things, I hope they don’t clash.” Quinn said as she started
carrying items into the closet.
“I got Dad a new 60 inch plasma TV and Mom, a new bedroom set.”
Daria shrugged.
“Ok so what’d you get me?” Quinn said looking shocked.
“I’m not telling.” Daria smirked.
They returned to the apartment and found Jane playing with Cleo convincing her
that Aunt Jane would never kick defenseless puppies unlike some really mean
people who would remain nameless that almost ran over a dog. Jake was watching
television as Helen prepared lunch smiling over at Cleo as she played on the
floor.
“Jane, Trent have either of you told your parents about Cleo yet.”
Helen asked as the idea popped into her head.
“We’d have to know where they were to be able to do that.”
Jane almost growled.
“The only contact information we have is a little out of date.”
Trent answered.
“What about your brother or sisters.” Helen pressed gently.
“I honestly haven’t thought about calling them. Janey’s the
only one I’ve seen or heard from since before I went out to the west
coast.” Trent shrugged as he sat down on the floor next to Cleo and
claimed a fat penguin to join in the epic journey Cleo was leading the
collection of critters on.
Daria watched Quinn smile and join the other three on the floor and turned to
her mother.
“You remember Stacy Rowe?” Daria asked her mother.
“Yes, it’s a shame what her parents did to that poor girl. Just
when she needed them the most.” Helen said shaking her head sadly.
“She’s up here, said something about going back to school. Her son
is cute.” Daria shrugged.
“I almost fainted when I found out she named him after Quinn.
Didn’t you go out with Ted for a little while?” Helen smiled.
“Something like that. Did he really just take off?” Daria asked
surprised that her mother knew so much about it.
“Apparently. His parents came to me to set up the child support payments,
their so ashamed of him but even they didn’t disown their own daughter
and grandchild.” Helen groaned in disgust.
“So how’s she been getting by?” Daria asked.
“She dropped out of school and then worked up till she had the baby and
then went back to work almost at once. I think she had a job at the mall in
Lawndale for six months. I lost track of what was happening a while ago.”
Helen admitted.
“So she and Quinn turned into these incredible people and all it took was
kids.” Daria said thoughtfully.
“I think it more likely that they allowed them selves to be controlled
for so long that everyone decided they couldn’t think. When they became
the person who had to make the choices, the real them got a chance to come
out.” Helen said as she pulled a pan of stuffed shells out of the stove
and covered them in gravy.
Daria turned as she heard fingers gently plucking the strings of an acoustic
guitar.
Quinn was sitting next to Cleo strumming Puff the Magic Dragon and singing
along with Cleo. She was playing on Trent’s beat up old practice guitar
but she played it well and it was clear it wasn’t the first time she had.
Daria excused herself from the room and after ducking into her bedroom she
grabbed her jacket and made her way to the roof.
She sat down at the edge leaning against the roof wall that went around the
building top looking out into the city as she carefully rolled the paper not
letting any of the contents spill.
She lifted the joint to her lips and lit it with a Zippo lighter.
The smoke hit her lungs like fire as it mixed with the cold Boston air. The
lightness hit her head almost at once, serving to relax her.
She heard the roof door squeak open and the sounds of footsteps on the gravel
top roof moving closer.
“Hey Amiga, I can’t believe you started a party without me.”
Jane laughed.
“Just wanting to relax a bit but I warn you this stuff is pretty
old.” Daria smiled as she held out the joint for Jane.
“Any port in a storm.” Jane said quickly taking the joint and
dragging on it.
“Damn this stuff is old. Is this left over from summer?” Jane said
looking disappointed.
“Ya, Did you know that Quinn could play the guitar?” Daria asked.
“Trent said something about that one of the reasons they started hanging
out was him teaching her how to play. She sings pretty nice too.” Jane
shrugged taking another drag and handing back the joint to Daria.
“I just felt it land on me. They have a history and a bond that’s
going to last forever.” Daria said still staring out over the roof.
“Cleo. That doesn’t change how you two feel about each other. It
would be stupid for you to walk away from something just because it might be
hard.” Jane said with a worried look.
“I know.” Daria sighed and she rested her head on her arms still
looking out over the buildings.
“WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING UP HERE?” Quinn said as she walked up
behind them.
Jane had the joint in her mouth, frozen in place as she turned and saw Quinn
behind them.
Daria lifted her head and sighed as she plucked the joint from Jane’s
lips and took a drag before speaking.
“Smoking Pot.” Daria replied.
“DARIA!” Quinn said looking stern.
“I think we’re in trouble.” Jane giggled.
“Relax, I really don’t do this often and it’s about 5 months
old so it’s really weak.” Daria said as Quinn pulled up next to
her.
“Ok.” Quinn said and then she plucked the joint from Daria’s
fingers and sat down next to her taking a long drag.
“Got this stuff is ancient.” Quinn said as she struggled to control
a cough that tried to break free.
“Sorry, I don’t get the urge to risk jail time often so I tend to
have some left over and it sits forever.” Daria laughed as the nerves
loosened throughout her entire body.
Quinn handed the joint back and pulled a pack of cigarettes from her pocket and
lit a cowboy killer with a disposable lighter.
“You smoke.” Jane said looking even more shocked than when Quinn
snuck up behind them.
“About a pack a week.” Quinn sighed.
“I take it Cleo, doesn’t know.” Daria replied.
“No and she better not find out. I’m going to try to quit again
after the holidays.” Quinn stated firmly.
“Trent wanted to know if you were upset about me and him. You left right
after he loaned me his guitar to play for Cleo.” Quinn continued.
“No, I just realized that you two did more than make Cleo together. You
dated and went out and spent time together.” Daria tried to explain.
“He was lonely and so was I. We spent time together because we were both
feeling the same kind of emptiness. I used him as a giant ken doll and he
taught me how to play. The other stuff just kinda of happened and it only took
us about three weeks of sleeping together to decide we weren’t in love
just clinging to each other because there wasn’t anyone else
there.” Quinn said honestly.
“It scares me. I’ve been with two guys and it sucked. The only sex
I’ve had that was worth having was one night with Jane.” Daria
admitted.
“I’m going to hit you with some hard love here. Did you want to
have sex with the guys you had sex with?” Quinn asked.
“No.” Daria whispered in response.
“Have you ever wanted to like you want to with Trent?” Quinn
pressed.
“No, I’ve never wanted to before except with Jane that one night,
till now.” Daria said as she realized the point Quinn was making.
“So using logic, when you wanted to have sex it was good and when you
didn’t it was bad.” Quinn finished her point.
“Of course it would be bad if you were just doing it to do it for
them.” Jane added to the conversion.
“So Mark isn’t as bad as I thought.” Daria mused.
“No he’s worse but that’s beside the point.” Jane
laughed.
“No one is trying to push you into anything your not ready for but I
think you and Trent are made for each other.” Quinn sighed as she took
the last drag on the joint that they had been passing around before stubbing it
out.
“Stacy and you are so different now, I feel like I’m still the same
person waiting to grow up.” Daria said letting her emotions out.
“That’s because you grew up long before we did. I don’t
remember you being rich before and so in control or shallow enough to get a
boob job.” Quinn teased.
“Did Mom or Dad notice?” Daria groaned leaning into Quinn’s
shoulder.
“First night.” Quinn said patting her sister’s head.
“I was just tired of looking like a boy.” Daria groaned louder.
“Tell her she wasn’t flat before.” Jane mumbled as she
stretched out on the cold roof.
“She wasn’t but if she felt she needed some help in that area,
it’s fine.” Quinn said as she rubbed her hand up and down on
Daria’s back.
“Trent likes them.” Jane laughed.
“Of course he likes them, he’s male.” Quinn replied.
“It’s getting cold.” Daria said as she shivered forcefully.
Quinn and Daria helped Jane to her feet and down the stairs to the apartment.
“Jane I need you to focus long enough to make it to a bedroom and pass
out. I don’t need a stoned girl speech from my parents or to freak out
Cleo.” Quinn said firmly pinching the top of Jane’s ear.
“Ok, ok. You’re a really good Mom you know.” Jane said before
Daria opened the door and headed directly to Quinn’s room and falling on
the bed after closing the door.
Quinn sat with Cleo who was helping Helen in the kitchen and Daria looked
around the apartment and got her mother’s attention.
Helen pulled Daria off to the side and started talking.
“Jake dragged Trent out to pick up some desert and maybe some movies to
watch later. We’re going to have to head back to Lawndale tomorrow then
we’ll be back in a week to be here for Christmas eve.” Helen
explained.
“Ok so why the secrecy?” Daria asked feeling confused as the pot
dulled her senses.
“Well I didn’t want Cleo to hear me complain about you smoking pot
on the roof.” Helen said angrily.
“Oh.” Daria managed to answer.
“But seeing as it clearly isn’t something you do often judging by
the fact that Jane is passed out and Quinn has the munchies and your out of
your mind, I’ll let it slide but you better make sure there is someone
taking care of that little girl if it happens again.” Helen said pressing
a finger into Daria’s chest.
“Yes ma’am.” Daria answered.
“Good now help me keep Quinn from eating all the junk food in the
house.” Helen said.
They returned to the kitchen and tried not to laugh as Cleo teased her mother
with box of cheese its.
“Mommy want snacks, no snacks for Mommy.” Cleo kept saying as she
held out the box and pulled it back before Quinn could grab it.
“But Cleo, Mommy wants a cracker, please.” Quinn was pleading with
puppy dog eyes.
“Can I have ice cream for breakfast?” Cleo tried to bargain.
“No.” Quinn said firmly.
“Then no cheese’es for Mommy.” Cleo laughed and dashed away
into her bedroom with the box.
“Cleo come back, Mommy will let you watch any movie you want.”
Quinn called after her.
“Can I watch the flying cows?” Cleo called from her room.
“Yes.” Quinn agreed.
“Ok.” Cleo said and carried the box to her mother and ran off to
get the movie.
“I just sold my soul for a box of cheese its.” Quinn laughed to
herself as Cleo but Twister in the DVD player.
“I’ll tell you the same thing I told Daria, please do not partake
of this form of relaxation unless there is someone to help out with
Cleo.” Helen said leaning in close to Quinn.
“I know. I swear this is only the second time this year.” Quinn
said clearly racking her memory.
“I’m not judging anyone, remember where your father and I lived
right up until Daria was almost Cleo’s age.” Helen sighed
understandingly.
“I only joined in because I knew you were here.” Quinn admitted.
“There’s no difference to me than this or having a few drinks but I
trust you to do right by your daughter.” Helen said as Cleo came over to
drag Quinn to the couch.
They all sat and watched the movie until Jake and Trent returned with a desert
that almost drove Cleo to the edge of her sanity, Ice cream cake.
Chapter Eight X-Mas
Daria woke peacefully and rolled over against Trent and leaned her head against
his bare chest, letting the rhythm of his heartbeat fill her.
“You ok?” He asked gently.
“I’m perfect now.” She sighed against him.
“I glad you enjoyed yourself.” Trent replied wrapping an arm around
her.
“Maybe I just needed to get my parents out of the apartment so I could
relax.” Daria laughed.
“Their coming back today aren’t they.” Trent asked.
“Tonight, They want to be here for Cleo’s first family Christmas.
My mover is standing by for them to leave to install Mom and Dad’s gifts
and send me the pictures so I can put them on the tree tonight.” Daria
said as heard sounds coming from the living room and kitchen.
“Sounds like Quinn and Jane are up with Cleo.” Trent mused.
“I told them not to tell her about getting to open one present on
Christmas Eve.” Daria smiled as Trent slid out of bed and reached for his
pants.
:Quinn was right.: Daria evilly thought as she watched him dress.
“Your staring.” Trent smirked.
“Yep.” Daria answered and slid off the bed and reached for her
clothes.
“I’m going to see what our sisters and Cleo are up too.”
Trent said as he pulled down his shirt and headed to the door.
“I’ll be out in a minute.” Daria called as he closed the door
behind him.
Daria joined them in the living room as Quinn and Jane smirked at her as she
stretched out on the couch with Cleo who was staring at a picture book trying
to map a route from the North Pole to Boston on a world map she had laid down
on the floor.
“Mommy, how fast does Santa fly his sleigh?” Cleo asked as she
stared down at the distance between the two locations.
“Ask Aunt Daria.” Quinn laughed.
“Aunt Daria.” Cleo said crawling on Daria’s back.
“300 miles per hour.” Daria decided quickly.
“Ok.” Cleo laughed.
“Cleo you need to pick that up sweetie, Stacy and L.Q are going to be
here any minute.” Quinn called from the kitchen.
“Ok, Mommy.” Cleo said and started picking up her toys and putting
them away.
“Wow.” Trent said watching his daughter.
“What?” Quinn laughed at his expression.
“She listens, are you sure she’s a Morgendorffer or a Lane.”
Trent joked.
“The ice is cracking. Mister.” Quinn said firmly.
“I wasn’t going there, I just meant she behaves.” Trent
retreated quickly.
“And what comparison are you making about me and my sister with that
remark then.” Quinn teased grimly.
“I’m going to help Cleo pick up her toys.” Trent said almost
running into Cleo’s room.
“We were kinda of spoiled brats, trying to get away with stuff back in
the day.” Daria offered.
“I just picking on him Daria, I am allowed or would you rather I turn my
attentions to what occurred last night.” Quinn said sweetly.
“2 points for Quinn.” Daria winced slightly.
“I think we should discuss last night.” Jane announced.
“No.” Daria said strongly.
“We DO need to discuss some kind of sound barrier because even with the
radio and TV blocking out anything from the other two bedrooms, in the living
room we could hear everything.” Quinn blushed.
“Kill me now, anything but please don’t make me live through this
conversion, just chuck me out the window into traffic.” Daria said
smothering herself with a throw pillow.
A knock on the door prevented any response from either Quinn or Jane as Quinn
walked to the door to greet their guests.
Stacy enter looking chilled and covered in bits of snow that fell to the floor
as she removed her coat to show the child sleeping in a pouch carrier protected
from the cold under the coat.
Daria watched as Stacy released several of the straps and pulled the one year
old out of the pouch and handed him to Quinn who was reaching out and pulled
her namesake to her and cooed down at the baby.
“He’s so perfect.” Quinn smiled as they walked into the
living room and Quinn sat down on the couch with Stacy taking a seat next to
her.
“So, you ready for a Morgendorffer Christmas tomorrow.” Jane asked
Stacy.
“Yes and Quinn is all excited to meet Cleo today or he was before he decided
to spend the day sleeping.” Stacy laughed.
Almost on cue Cleo came running out of her room being chased by Trent and she
squealed loudly.
“Baby!” Cleo said and she proceeded to climb her mother to get up
next to Little Quinn.
“Cleo this is Little Quinn and his Mommy, Stacy. Stacy was my best friend
in High School.” Quinn said and Cleo smiled briefly at Stacy but she had
eyes only for L.Q.
“Hi Trent.” Stacy said with a half wave.
“Hey nerd.” Trent replied with a smile.
“TRENT.” Daria sputtered with a shocked face.
“What?” Trent said surprised.
“That was his nickname for me back in Lawndale.” Stacy quickly
added.
“Oh.” Daria blushed.
“After Sandi found out I was dating Trent, she and Tiffany pretty much
told me to kiss off but Stacy hung out with us a lot.” Quinn filled in
some blanks.
“Did everybody in town know about you two but me and Jane?” Daria
sighed.
“Kevin?” Stacy mused with a smile.
“I hope you know that Daria plans on spoiling your son this Christmas
almost as much as Cleo.” Jane said pointing to the tree with the piles of
gifts that wrapped around the tree.
“He could use a little spoiling, couldn’t you.” Quinn said
smiling down at the now awake baby who was smiling as Cleo played peek a boo
with him.
“Quinn warned me.” Stacy laughed gently.
“Her plan to take over the world by buying the affections of children to
be used as foot soldiers in her plot is slowly gaining ground.” Jane said
deviously.
“So I have to ask, Daria and Trent are dating but you knows he’s
the father right.” Stacy asked nervously.
“Yes, it’s all right out in the open.” Daria assured her.
“Good I’m really bad at keeping secrets.’ Stacy said looking
relieved.
“Clearly.” Daria smirked.
Cleo pushed both mothers off the couch as she claimed it for the under 3 crowd
and sat with Little Quinn watching some singing cartoons movies.
All the adults sat nearby with Jane leaning on the couching trying to convince
Cleo she was mentally three but she wasn’t buying it even with Daria
offering to swear to it.
“And now that Ted found out his parents have been paying the child
support the judge ordered, he wants another blood test. He’s making the
claim that Joey is the father not him. His parents tried to explain we did a
blood test and it proved the baby was related to them so unless the father was
related as well it has to be Ted.” Stacy was complaining.
“So now he’s denying he’s the father when he hasn’t
been around till now.” Trent said as his already low opinion of Ted
dropped even father.
“I don’t know what he’s thinking, he hasn’t ever
questioned it before. I think it has to do with this girl he’s dating
now.” Stacy sighed as she watched Cleo and Little Quinn lean on each
other as they enjoyed the movie.
“Just wait till we start school then all the really cute boys will want
to hang out with us and none of them will stay away just because we’re
moms.” Quinn laughed.
“Ya, right and Daria’s next book is going to be a sex romp.”
Stacy snorted.
“Ouch.” Jane laughed.
“Speaking of books could you sign these?” Stacy asked as she pulled
out two of Daria’s books which Daria had never been happier to sign, they
were worn thin from being read so often and she couldn’t think of a
greater compliment.
They spent the day visiting before Stacy reluctantly loaded up her little one
and Jane gave her a ride back to their apartment with a promise to pick her up
in the morning.
Cleo pouted as she hugged Stacy and little Quinn bye but cheered up slightly at
the promise they would be returning in the morning.
Jake and Helen arrived an hour later and quickly picked up where they left off
with piling unparalleled attention on Cleo. Jane returned looking pleased with
herself and reported that Mark would be returning early and that he would be
there to bring in the new year with her. Cleo opened her Christmas Eve gift and
Daria was sure that people on the street below heard her cheering as she pulled
out
“Maybe I can get my bed back for a night.” Quinn joked nicely.
“I thought maybe you wouldn’t mind an extra person, it’s a
big bed.” Jane fired back.
“I don’t think so.” Quinn broke first.
The night disappeared quickly and with a blink Daria was being shaken awake by
a energetic two year old.
“Santa was here, Santa was here. He brought gifts and left dirt and
puddles on the floor.” Cleo was repeating over and over as she shook
Daria.
Daria sighed and got up to find that Trent was awake as well.
“Go back to sleep, it’s only five.” Daria sighed as she
climbed out of bed and stretched.
“I should take her back to bed.” Trent started only to be stopped
by a kiss.
“I got her.” Daria smiled and scoped up the hyper child.
“To early.” Cleo said looking tired herself.
“Just a bit, try to go back to sleep.” Daria whispered as they
crossed the living room.
“I like living here with you and Mommy and Aunt Jane and Daddy.”
Cleo said as Daria tucked her into bed.
“I like having you both here. I didn’t realize what was missing in
my life till your Mommy and you came to live with me.” Daria said.
“I sleep till morning now but then we open everything.” Cleo said
as she started to drift to sleep.
“That’s fine sweetie.” Daria said as she watched the little
girl fall asleep before returning to her room and climbing in with Trent.
“Is she going to go back to sleep.” Trent said surprising Daria in
that he stayed awake.
“Yes.” Daria smiled as she cuddled up next to Trent.
“Who’s idea was it to leave snow footprints all over the
floor.” Daria complained nicely.
“Your dad’s.” Trent chuckled.
“Remind me to look angry at him tomorrow.” Daria sighed pushing
against him.
“You’re going to make a good Mom too when you have a kid.”
Trent said as he wrapped his arms around her.
“How do feel about having more kids?” Daria tensed as she asked.
“I like the idea but we have to be married before I have anymore.”
Trent said as sleep took him.
Daria smiled as she felt the warmth from the blush that covered her body at his
sleep filled words take to her dreams.
Christmas morning went surprisingly peaceful, even a brief kiss between Quinn
and Trent under mistletoe could do nothing to ruin this day. Daria answered the
security buzzer with a smile that seemed to have taken up permanent residence
on her face.
“I have a delivery for Daria Morgendorffer.” The voice on the other
end called out.
“From who?” Daria asked surprised.
“Alcott publishing.” The voice replied.
“I’ll be right down.” Daria answered and turned and shrugged
apologies to everyone but Trent who was cleaning up a eggnog mess that still
had Stacy blushing furiously.
Trent came out of the bathroom and looked around the room with it’s piles
of wrapping paper being played with more than the toys before turning to Quinn
and Stacy and asking.
“Where’s Daria?”
“She went downstairs to get a delivery.” Jane started before
looking at the clock.
“Awhile ago.” Jane said as she realized how much time had passed.
“I’ll just go down and she what’s keeping her.” Trent
said as he felt a lump grow in his stomach.
Trent made his way down stairs and after checking the front door he move to the
parking entrance and froze when he saw the entrance door standing open.
A slight movement in the drift of snow that had built up at the door broke him
into a run.
“NO!” His soul shattered and the pain cried out as he found her.
Chapter Nine New Years Day
She remember being scared and then the pain, the crowbar was crystal clear in
her memory but everything was shrouded in a calming blankness that seemed to
dim her thoughts. The dream faded as she found herself pulling backwards away
from the dream and she felt herself struggle to remain in the emptiness fearing
what waited for her.
The sounds were the first thing she noticed, people breathing and shifting
around. Maybe it was the complete lack of conversion that made it seem so
unreal or maybe just the fact that she felt like she was flying. Light came
next as she felt brightness against her closed eyelids. She tried to move but
discovered her limbs were numb and any real attempt to move caused lightning
bolts of pain to spread through her back.
Daria opened her eyes and saw white clean sheets several inches below her.
Turning her head she could make out a bed, she seemed to be suspended above it.
“I guess I found my happy thought.” Daria grumbled weakly.
An explosion of activity and noise followed her comment as unseen people
started milling around her. She could only see their feet until Cleo moved into
view and pointed.
“You broke glasses, you going to trouble.” Cleo said and Daria
couldn’t help but smile.
“You can help me pick out a new pair.” Daria said smiling down at
the little girl.
Daria felt the groups of people hugging her and she allowed them to for longer
than she could stand before protesting.
“Amiga, we were worried but now I see that you just found a way to be
even more lazy.” Jane cried.
“Do you remember what happened?” Her mother said kneeling down so
Daria could see her tired face and red puffy eyes.
“Not much, somebody went to town on me with a crowbar.” Daria said
as she wiggled her feet and hands trying to get the numbness to pass and was
surprised that it was working.
“It was Ted.” Stacy cried out from her left side.
“He turned himself in, he’s currently being held on 4 counts of
assault and battery and one attempted murder.” Helen said as Daria heard
Quinn and Jake both try to calm Stacy down.
“4?” Daria asked confused.
“He hit his girlfriend then showed up at Stacy’s apartment and beat
up Jennifer, her roommate then attacked a delivery driver and stole his van to
come to your apartment and … afterwards he disappeared until the morning
when he turned himself in to the Boston police.” Helen explained gently.
“Did he hurt anyone bad?” Daria asked feeling nervous about her
condition now.
“He broke two of Jennifer’s ribs and her jaw and that’s the
worst… except you. Apparently when you broke your keycard rather than
give it to him, which denied him access to get upstairs he snapped.”
Helen stumbled trying to find an easy way to describe the nights events.
“How bad is it?” Daria pushed holding her breath and she felt the
hand holding hers squeeze gently and she knew without seeing it was Trent.
“He punched you in the face then hit you with the crowbar on the side of
your head. You must have fell down because he started hitting you on the back
then. He thought he killed you, that’s why he ran off. Supposedly he got
wasted for the first time with his new girlfriend and started complaining about
Stacy keeping him from seeing his kid, which is nonsense but then he started
getting angry and when she tried to calm him down he went off, first on her
then everybody else. When he dried out the next morning and realized what he
did, he drove straight to the police station and turned himself in.” Jane
offered.
“Ok but that didn’t answer my question.” Daria sighed knowing
it must be bad.
“Can you move your feet?” Quinn asked her gently.
Daria froze at the question and felt tears fill her eyes. She started moving
her feet as much as she could with the way they were held in place by some kind
of harness pushing past the pain in her back.
“Easy, good. They were worried they might have missed some damage to your
back.” Quinn said calmly stroking Daria’s head.
“How bad?” Daria pushed.
“Wait for the Doctor kiddo and let him tell us. They haven’t wanted
to make any decision on your condition until you woke up.” Jake said and
she felt his hand pat her leg.
“How long was I out?” Daria asked feeling confused.
“It’s new year’s day.” Jane said kneeling down into her
sightline.
“Oh… Did Mark make it back?” Daria said not knowing what else
to say.
“He’s out getting some lunch and meeting with the Dewitt-Clintons
right now on the best strategy to keep Ted in jail.” Jane said as she
reached up and caressed Daria’s face.
“His parents are here!” Daria said surprised.
“They’ve been stopping in to check on you and helping to take care
of my roommate, Jane moved me into the second floor with her. Their really
sorry about what he did and they helped get bail denied. I just can’t
bring myself to blame them.” Stacy answered when Jane didn’t.
“There’s only one person to blame.” Jake said with
conviction.
Stacy burst into tears as Jane and Quinn both started calming her again.
“I didn’t mean that. I’m glad it was Daria that he ran into
because someone else might have handed over the swipe card and let him upstairs
to get you… Damn it that’s not what I meant.” Jake tried as a
sudden bit of muted crying broke out in the corner of the room.
“Jennifer I’m not saying, I didn’t mean … I’m
just going to shut up now and get everyone soda’s.” Jake said as he
quickly fled the room.
A pad of paper with hurried writing on it was pushed into her line of sight.
“I’m so so so so sorry I told him where you lived but I was scared
and he hurt me.” Was written on the paper.
“Jennifer I don’t blame you and neither does my dad or anyone else.
Do I know you?” Daria asked.
“Everyone called me Burnout girl in school.” Was quickly written on
the pad and pushed into her view.
“Army jacket and flower patched pants right.” Daria said.
A strange muffled sound preceded the pad returning into her view, Daria guessed
it was laughter.
“I still wear the jacket but the pants ended up being left in …
someone’s bedroom when his cheerleader ex-girlfriend came over to visit
and got upset to find us together I had to leave by window without them. That
was my last week in Lawndale thankfully.” Daria couldn’t help but
laugh as she read that.
“The nurse just pulled me outside to let me know that the doctor is going
to be awhile seeing as there was this tiny 10 car pileup out on the
interstate.” Jane said with a half frown and smile.
“Is there any food?” Daria sighed.
“I called Mark and him and the Dewitt-Clintons are on route with lunch
now. I hope you’re craving Chinese.” Jane answered.
“That’s fine, Trent you can let go of my hand now, come here so I
can see you.” Daria said as she tried to see something besides his shoes.
Trent did one better and slid onto the bed beneath her and lined up so his head
was directly below hers.
“Hi.” Trent smiled up at her.
“Hi yourself.” Daria said and tried to stretch her neck to kiss him
but falling short so he lifted his head so their lips could meet.
“You scared me to death.” Trent said when they pulled apart.
“That’s what you get for kissing Quinn under the mistletoe, next
time I’ll just throw something at you though.” Daria laughed until
her back sent a spike of pain.
“I found you.” Trent said and Daria saw the memory burning behind
his eyes.
“Then I really am going to have to come up with a special way to thank
you when we go home, how do you feel about whipped cream.” Daria laughed
and blushed when she was reminded by the gasps that they weren’t alone.
“DARIA!” Helen tried to sound angry.
“YA, He likes caramel topping better anyway.” Jane laughed at
Daria’s embarrassment.
“Who’s hungry.” Mark called out as he walked into the room.
“Everyone except maybe Daria who’s switching between her foot and
Trent’s tongue in her mouth.” Quinn said as she grabbed a few bags
from the overloaded Mark.
“Hey Daria.” Mark laughed when he saw Daria looking over toward his
feet with Trent underneath her staring up toward her.
“Hey Mark did you meet my boyfriend Trent. He also my sister’s ex
and the father of her child.” Daria tossed out.
“Jane filled me so no shock here.” Mark laughed as he offered Trent
a bag of food.
“Damn it Jane, I was supposed to be the one to tell him.” Daria
swore at Jane’s boots.
“I had to talk to him so hush and eat some pu-pu pork.” Jane
grinned.
Daria heard the footsteps come in and saw the old fashion shoes and knew who
was standing there.
“Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt-Clinton, hi.” Daria said trying to make them
feel less nervous.
“Daria, we are so sorry about what Ted did to you.” Mr. Dewitt said
sounding pained.
“If you want to be sorry then be sorry that Quinn is hogging the Szechwan
chicken.” Daria said as Trent fed her some pork.
“I am not, Jane’s got all the Szechwan and the orange
chicken.” Quinn protested.
A cough pulled everyone’s attention to the door.
“Hello Doctor Franklin.” Helen greeted as she quickly swallowed a
mouthful of rice.
“I hear our sleeping beauty is awake and eating I see.” Dr.
Franklin said cheerfully.
“Trying to eat but it’s kind of hard hanging in the air.”
Daria complained as Trent slipped out from underneath her.
“I think we can let you out of the slings.” The doctor said and
everyone moved out of his way as he lowered her to the bed and Daria felt
gravity again.
“Now as I pull the slings out from underneath you go ahead and sit
up.” He said calmly.
Daria lifted herself up and turned so her feet were hanging over the side only
to have him grab her by the shoulder.
“Don’t try to stand. Let’s adjust the bed and get you sitting
back a bit. If you feel any pulling or tearing let me know at once. I
don’t want to have to re-stitch your back.” The Doctor said as he
guide her back into a resting position and raised the bed so she was leaning
against her back in a reclined sitting position.
He checked her responses in her fingers and toes and smiled as she moved her
legs with ease.
“Ok, here’s the good news, there doesn’t seem to be any
damage to your nervous system.” Dr. Franklin said and Daria knew there
was bad news as well.
“But.” Daria sighed.
“The Thoracolumbar fascia muscle in your back was damaged and while we
repaired it as best we can. It’s one of the primary weight baring muscles
that allow us to stand and walk. The muscle tissue is healing nicely but I have
to be realistic, very few people with this kind of serious damage to this
muscle ever walk on their own again. Best case you will be able to walk and
stand with the aid of crutches or back braces designed to redistribute weight
to other areas on the back. Worse case you will require a wheelchair to get
around, that’s going to happen for the first few months at the very least
anyway. A few months of physical therapy and we’ll have a better idea of
what’s going to happen.” He explained.
“I feel fine, sure it hurts but not really that bad.” Daria said as
Trent moved next to her and reclaimed her hand.
“And it won’t, right up until you try to stand up or walk.”
Dr. Franklin sighed.
“So I’m not going to be able to walk again.” Daria said
without any emotion.
“Then I’ll carry you.” Trent whispered down to her.
“The odds go like this, the smallest is a complete recovery next is
walking with just a back brace followed by using arm crutches and lastly and
almost as small of chance as a complete recovery is confinement to a wheelchair
fulltime.” The doctor said maintaining a careful detachment.
“What about other things?” Daria said with a blush as she glanced
at Trent.
“Umm… Well there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to
do anything anyone else could do in that area excepting anything that would
require you to stand.” Dr. Franklin said growing more and red as he
spoke.
“What about kids?” Daria pushed and saw her mother almost fall into
a chair.
“I would expect that the only problems would occur later in the pregnancy
and would prevent you from walking as you gained weight and lost
mobility.” He answered calmly.
“Ok. Thank you.” Daria said and waved for a container of chicken
which she started to eat with a lowered head.
The doctor realizing he had just been dismissed started to leave and was
followed by Helen and the Dewitt-Clintons outside as Jane surrendered the
orange chicken.
“Didn’t mean to freak you out with asking that but it’s kinda
of important to me.” Daria said without looking up.
“It’s ok but I did mean what I said before, I expect to be married
before I have another kid.” Trent said as he started eating some ribs
with gusto.
“Does someone mind filling me in?” Jane demanded with a fierce
look.
“Nothing much, we talked about kids is all.” Daria said looking up
at her best friend.
“I think it will be great and I bet it will look like Cleo but be a
little boy.” Stacy said with a huge grin.
Cleo looked up and moved over to the bed and was lifted up by her father so she
could look at her Aunt.
“You need pony to carry you and monkeys to bring you stuff.” Cleo
announced and showed her a drawing of Daria sitting atop a horse with winged
monkeys bringing her breakfast.
“I don’t think a pony would like living in our apartment.”
Daria said with a smile as she looked at the picture that showed remarkable
talent for a 2 year old.
“And you have to be evil to get winged monkeys.” Jane smiled as she
looked over Daria’s shoulder at the picture.
“You can give some to Aunt Daria.” Cleo stated.
“I went with the human male thralls instead of monkeys.” Jane
sighed leaning against Mark who smiled and kissed her cheek.
Daria noticed a slight blush from Quinn at the kiss but it didn’t last
long and Quinn returned to eating and trying to interest her namesake in some
rice
Her father returned with the sodas and hugged her gently before starting to
eat.
“I’m surprised they let all of you in here.” Daria mused as
she ate.
“Your famous so special rules apply. The media are camped out in the
lobby and outside the apartment building so they couldn’t have us wait
down there anyway.” Quinn answered quickly.
“I even got a private room when Quinn told them we were friends.”
Jennifer wrote on her pad and held it up. Daria had to bring the pad in close
to read the writing.
“How do you like the new apartment?” Daria asked.
“It’s really big and I love it. I set up my drum set and no one
complained when I went on a two hour pound down.” Jennifer wrote.
“I didn’t know you were a musician.” Daria answered
surprised.
“Where did you think I got the stuff to burnout on?” Jennifer wrote
with her muffled laughter.
“I saw you play once, you filled in for the Harpies’s drummer when
she was in county for 10 days.” Trent said from next to Daria.
“Your pretty good.”
“Thank you, I used to see you all the time at the Zon and House of Pain.
Your drummer was a dork but you guys sounded great.” Jennifer wrote.
“Thanks, Max was a bit of a dork but he got a pretty good gig with that
Heavy Metal band.” Trent shrugged.
“What’s the rest of the band doing?” Jennifer asked in
writing.
“Nick is teaching bass out of the mall music store and Jessie well, I
guess it should shock me that he was gay but it really didn’t. He’s
got a nice place selling scented candles in Florida with his partner.”
Trent answered and Daria noticed only Quinn looked really surprised by the
news.
“What about everyone else from Lawndale?” Quinn asked sounding
curious.
“Sandi is married but no one is expecting it to last but she will get
rich off of it. Tiffany is working with kids now, she went for a 2 year degree
in social dynamics and now she consoles kids on how to avoid peer pressure.
Brittney is cheering for the Tampa Bay Bucs and Kevin is down in Texas with a
2.6 average and a starting position. Andrea and Upchuck, don’t call him
that around her, are married and still in film school in New York. Mack is
bald, by choice, after he blew out his knee the school decided to honor his
ride anyway and he switched to political science and wants a career in politics
now. Jodie burned out and ran off to the peace core for a year during her
second year of college. I still get letters from her and she’s happier
now than she ever was in Lawndale. “ Daria answered first.
“Joey is a police officer in Lawndale and Jamie is in the military over
in Iraq. Jeffy went to California State and he’s a first string alternate
for the football team but a star on the baseball team, all three of them were
dating redheads last time I checked.” Stacy continued with a smirk and
sideways glance at Quinn.
“Wow.” Quinn said with a smile.
“I can’t believe you guys keep track of so many people from back
home.” Jennifer wrote.
“Didn’t you?” Jane asked puzzled.
“Just Scarlett.” Jennifer answered showing everyone the pad with a
shrug.
“What’s she up to?” Stacy asked.
“She got a job finding stories for Sick Sad World and keeps a rat on her
desk.” Jennifer wrote quickly.
“I hope you left some food for the rest of us.” Helen said as she
reentered the room with the Dewitt-Clintons who took a seat around
Daria’s bed like everyone and started eating.
“Dr. Franklin says you should be able to go home in three or four days
and your publisher called to wish you the best and let you know that the
publicity has pushed you up to number one and dragged your last two books back
onto the list. Apparently you getting attacked is making you and them even
richer.” Helen said with a touch of distain in her tone.
“Don’t even think about it, Jane. We are not doing this every
year.” Daria warned as Jane seemed to perk at the news.
“I’m just happy because I get cash for every book that sells
remember. I should clean up.” Jane smirked rudely.
“Maybe you can finally finish up your collection of dezians of hell
statues.” Daria said setting the container of food aside and rubbed her
eyes and tried to wish away the headache that was coming from trying to focus
so long without her glasses. Reading Jennifer’s pad had speeded matters
up but her eyes were refusing to stay focused now and the light was becoming
far too bright.
Her back was starting to hurt but nothing like the pain she expected from what
was a disabling injury. Before she allowed the nurse to give her a pain shot
she requested her family and friends take the night off and pushed until only
Jane and Trent refused to leave. She hugged and kissed her family as they left
and while she truly believed they wanted to stay with her there was relief in
their eyes at not spending another night here in a cramped hospital room.
Trent fell asleep even before she did with his head against the side of her
stomach and Jane watched him sleep with a smile as she drifted in and out of
sleep.
It was 3 AM when she awoke and saw Daria gently stroking his head as she
flipped through a magazine.
“We need to talk, now that there’s nobody here.” Jane sighed
with a smile.
Daria smirked at Trent’s asleep form and looked over at Jane.
“It’s your dime freakin friend.” Daria said almost upbeat.
Chapter 10 Normal is overrated
“YOU DID WHAT WITH MY SISTER!!!” Daria yelled and quickly looked
embarrassed and froze waiting to see if Trent would wake up or any nurses would
come running in.
“It just happened. We both were really upset and I guess we wanted to
feel something other than the pain of watching you hang here in that thing day
after day.” Jane said looking almost amused.
“So now what, are you dumping Mark?” Daria groaned painfully.
“NO… I don’t think so, he’s being really understanding.
He doesn’t consider it cheating since she’s a girl and he understands
a couple of slips aren’t enough to end our relationship over if we still
want to make it work.” Jane sighed.
“Couple!” Daria gasped surprised.
“Twice, once at home in bed and one more time here in an empty room at
the hospital the next day.” Jane replied.
“You only hooked up with me once.” Daria said trying not to feel
jealous.
“We didn’t get out of bed for 48 hours, I think you got the most
alone time.” Jane laughed.
“My sex life is far too similar to my sister’s right now.”
Daria sighed.
“I know and between Trent and now me I have to agree but I wanted to let
you know but honestly it was more support than sex.” Jane admitted.
“Are you planning on sleeping with her again?” Daria asked.
“Would it bother you if I was?” Jane said surprisingly.
“I don’t know.” Daria answered honestly.
“I want to try to work things out with Mark so we’re doing a ten
day cool off period while we figure things out. I’m starting to think
I’m curved.” Jane said with a confused frown.
“Curved.” Daria mused not getting the reference.
“As in not straight.” Jane replied with a small smile.
Trent shifted in his sleep and both women stopped talking until the quite
snores returned.
“If you and Quinn do hook up please just be honest with me and
don’t break her heart or drive her away.” Daria said as tears
leaked from her eyes.
“I promise I won’t and honestly I shouldn’t tell you this but
I think she might like Jennifer, they’ve been jamming together, doing the
whole music thing almost as much as her and Stacy have been hanging out. Might
just be friends but it might be something else. It could also be the fact that
we don’t see anyone else currently since the press have us locked in here
and at home.” Jane said with a shrug as she climbed onto the thin bed and
cuddled up next to Daria tightly as her brother continued to snore away.
“See if Jen and Sid are back in town and have them invite some guys over
for a movie night and see if we can make some connections. I’m not trying
to undercut you or anything or even Quinn and Jennifer but let’s offer up
some options.” Daria said firmly.
“Ok that’s a good idea; I’m not hurting you am I?” Jane
asked as she laid her head on Daria’s chest.
“Never.” Daria smiled and rubbed Jane’s head gently.
“You and Trent are good for each other, you keep him awake and he makes
you smile. I hope I can find that kind of sync.” Jane said with a yawn.
“Go to sleep.” Daria smiled and Jane obeyed but not without a last
word.
“You should name your kids after me.” Jane said pleasantly as her
eyes closed.
“I don’t want a kid named busybody.” Daria said but Jane
didn’t hear as she had already left for the land of Nod.
Daria let sleep take her and soon she was dreaming and the smile remained.
She went home 5 days after she awoke, riding in a non powered wheelchair at her
own insistence and found that her life would become a cycle of exercise and
doctor’s visits and physical therapy. Weeks went by and she
couldn’t remember a time without the pain and aches and the chair. Trent
quickly became her favorite person at night as he spent hours working the pain
from her limbs but he was her worst enemy in the day, ruthlessly forcing her to
continue her the therapy and pushing her past every limit she thought she had
until she would beg to stop but he never let her. She hated the chair that
seemed to a permanent fixture in her life even if her daily dependency ended
she knew there would always be times when it would be needed. The crutches
weren’t bad but a lifetime of avoiding physical activity did not lend itself
well to their use.
Daria spent her down time playing with Cleo, who was determined to convince her
mother how much they needed monkeys to help out, so far only Jane had been
convinced.
Stacy and Little Quinn became daily activities in her life and she found that
Stacy was an interesting and creative person now freed from the influences of
the former fashion mob. Her writing tended to classical styles of poetry but
the skill was undeniable.
Even with a floor between them, the newly formed band could be heard through
the floors mostly when they dragged Trent down to join them. With two electric
guitars and a drum set pounding, Daria started looking into sound proofing the
various apartments.
Ted having confessed to the assaults spared them the stress of a trial but
sentencing hearings and mental evaluations delayed the end for almost three
months.
“Come on Daria just ten more than your done for today.” Trent said
as she gasped for breath on the floor of the living room with him holding her
feet down.
“Later, let’s fool around.” Daria tried to look seductive
through the sweat.
“Maybe 20 if you have that much extra energy.” Trent teased.
“Damn it, I’m tired and it hurts.” Daria complained as she
started back doing the sit-ups.
“You’re always tired and it always hurts but do you want it to hurt
sitting in the chair or standing on your feet.” Trent used his best
weapon against her.
“I’m already using the crutches without any problems and I hope to
be back in the chair for a few months soon.” Daria said pointedly.
“What?” Trent said confused.
“Kids, a baby, you know, a little version of you and me.” Daria
said as she finished the last sit-up and rolled over starting to crawl to the
couch.
“I told you, I’m not having another kid until after I’m married.”
Trent sighed.
“OK.” Daria said as she lifted herself onto the couch showing off
the muscles she had grown since she got out of the hospital.
Trent just looked at her confused.
“I said ok.” Daria pushed before groaning and banging her head down
on the armrest.
Trent still just looked at her without understanding.
“JANE.” Daria yelled out and several people appeared from the
various rooms.
“Can I help you, is the big mean Trent picking on you again.” Jane
laughed as she came out of Cleo’s room half covered in finger paints and
Stacy behind her was worse but Cleo and Little Quinn both looked like they had
been dipped in various paints.
“We make art.” Cleo announced.
“Your brother is thick.” Daria complained.
“What’s he done now?” Quinn smirked taking a seat next to
Daria on the couch glaring over at Trent with a smile.
“He won’t knock me up.” Daria said strongly.
“I told you, first we get married then kids.” Trent defended
himself.
“And I said ok but you’re not getting it.” Daria lashed back
at him.
Quinn started giggling and Stacy had to hold her side as the laughter burst
from behind her hand.
Jane looked at her brother and sighed fondly at his complete confusion before
speaking.
“Trent, just ask her to marry you already so I can get another niece or
nephew.” Jane laughed at his expression.
“Oh.” Trent said as the pieces fell into place behind his eyes.
“Well.” Daria said looking annoyed.
“I didn’t know if you wanted to, but … willyoumarryme?”
Trent asked in a breathless voice.
“It’s about time, yes I will marry you.” Daria sighed and
pulled Trent over to her and hugged him tightly.
“Finally, I can start planning the wedding now.” Quinn said with a
quick hug to her sister and Trent before heading toward the phone talking out a
list of who she needed to call.
“Aunt Daria is gonna be stop mommy now.” Cleo said as she jumped up
onto the couch and started bouncing on both her father and Daria.
“Step.” Daria said with a groan as Cleo bounced on her stomach.
“Congratulations.” Stacy offered with a huge grin.
“I haven’t gotten the ring on him yet.” Daria said looking
pleased.
“So that means I might get a chance to escape back into the wild.”
Trent teased with a kiss.
“Jane has offered to hunt you down and lock you in a damp closet until
the wedding day if you try to run.” Daria deadpanned.
“I can’t believe you two are getting married. Can Little Quinn and
Cleo have roles in the wedding?” Stacy said still looking like a kid at
Christmas.
“Talk to Quinn, I think she’s in charge of the wedding.”
Daria chuckled as she forced Trent to lay beside her on the couch as Cleo
continued to climb over them covering them with paint.
“I hope this comes off before tomorrow.” Trent sighed as he looked
at his now bright green hand.
“Doesn’t matter, I’m going to say my piece and roll out of
there. I’m not sticking around for the sentencing.” Daria said, not
even the reminder of the last of Ted’s court dates could bring down her
mood.
“Mom and Dad say that you are not allowed to elope. They at least get to
help plan this wedding even if you don’t let them pay for it.”
Quinn called from the table as she continued writing down information on a
legal pad and Daria felt a touch of nostalgia, reminding her of their mother
doing the same even down to the way Quinn held the phone.
“No eloping but I want people I know there, invite whoever else you want
but make sure to get with Jane to build a guest list.” Daria sighed but
got a thumbs up from Quinn.
They got up early the next morning and dressed up for their brief court
appearance. Only Jennifer and Daria would be addressing the court, Stacy having
been invited but declined and Daria understood completely, Ted was going to
jail and no one wanted her to help send the father of her child to jail.
They entered the courtroom in time to catch the end of Ted’s current
girlfriend giving her statement to the judge.
“I know what he did was wrong but I got him drunk even after he told me
he hadn’t drank before so I feel at least some blame and I hope you will
take that into consideration.” The small pretty girl said before
returning to her seat.
Jennifer was called next and she walked to the podium and sighed loudly as she
opened her prepared statement.
“I knew Ted in High School, we didn’t hangout or even talk much but
he never hurt anyone. I would like to be able to say that I forgive him but the
reminder I get every time I eat an apple is a stronger urge. I hope the court
remembers that while I believe without doubt he was out of control from
drinking, he still chose to let himself get that way. He has shown that he
doesn’t have the ability to make good choices in his life and maybe
someone else needs to make them for awhile.” Jennifer finished and only
Daria knew that she had stopped half way through her speech, leaving the
harshest statements and a request for lengthy jail time unread as she returned
to the back of the courtroom to wait with Quinn and Stacy who were quickly
giving her hugs.
Daria rolled up to the podium and rose from her chair shakily and almost fell before
she was able to grasp it and stand next to it. :Let’s hear it for
drama.: She thought angrily at herself.
She righted herself and took a breath before starting to speak; she
didn’t look at Ted sitting nearby.
“I almost didn’t come today, but I want to add something to today
that I was worried would be overlooked. I don’t want to discuss his
punishment but there are several chapters in my books I could forward to the
court if they wanted some ideas in that area. Today I just hope that as we punish,
we also help. Ted needs help to learn how to be a better adult so something
like this never happens again. His son is named for my sister and hopefully our
families will be intertwined for a long time so he’s going to have to
learn to take responsibility for ALL his actions. Ted I can forgive you but I
don’t ever want to see the you I met that night again so take the time to
try to grow up and get past it.” Daria said before turning back toward
her chair and returning to the wheelchair with little fuss.
She fled the room quickly and didn’t speak until they got into the
parking lot.
“You didn’t do that for me did you?” Stacy said looking
guilty.
“No, I did it for me. I don’t want Little Quinn coming up to me in
15 years asking about why I sent his dad to jail for an extra five
years.” Daria sighed.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t, I guess you understand why I
didn’t want to speak today.” Stacy said as she rubbed her
son’s head as he slept peacefully in her arms.
Daria nodded in response before speaking.
“I just can’t bring myself to seek revenge maybe I’m getting
soft but I understand and I would have tried to talk you out of it, if you had
wanted to.” Daria shrugged as she watched Quinn buckle Cleo into a car
seat before glancing quickly over at Jennifer who was smoking a cigarette away
from the car.
Stacy noticed where she was looking and lowered her voice.
“The answer would be yes, Jennifer dates both and while they don’t
talk about it. Quinn’s not sleeping on the couch when she and Cleo spend
the night with Little Quinn and me.” Stacy whispered.
“I hear your dating that guy, Jim.” Daria replied wanting to change
the subject.
“We went out a few times. I like him even if he is a little goofy.”
Stacy laughed and Daria joined her.
“Let’s get home, I want to corner my sister and have a roof top
chat with her.” Daria groaned and wheeled herself over to her new SUV and
started the climb she was forced to do to get in the monster.
:Trust Jane to pick out the biggest, tallest one she could find.: Daria
thought sending daggers toward her friend who was already sitting in the
driver’s seat.
“You told me to get something that we can all fit in.” Jane said
showing off her mind reading ability.
“How’s things with Mark?” Daria asked to distract Jane from
her struggle to get in the seat without help.
Trent loaded up the wheelchair into the back having learned that an offer of
assistance would not be welcome.
“We’re getting a bit more serious, I’m thinking about taking
one of the other apartments and us trying to live together.” Jane said
sounding amazed.
Daria noticed the last of the doors closed and checked to make sure everyone
was inside before nodding over to Jane.
“Well I think that could be arranged but I hear the landlord is a real
bitch.” Daria smiled.
“Well I know all her weak spots.” Jane smirked.
“Oh really.” Daria replied.
“Yep and with Quinn and Jennifer starting a band maybe I could sing for
you if you don’t believe me.” Jane threatened.
“Ok, now why didn’t we think of that as a suitable punishment for
Ted?” Stacy joked from behind them.
“Because there are laws about what kind of torture you can do to
prisoners.” Daria answered.
Daria waited until everyone was starting to unwind before she made her way up
to the roof hoping she would catch her sister having a smoke break while Trent
watched cartoons with Cleo.
She wasn’t surprised that she found Jennifer on the roof with Quinn both
smoking and laughing that was easy for Daria to tell was staged for her benefit
as the sound of the crutches must have given them 5 minutes to look innocent.
“Can I get one of those?” Daria asked as she sat down on one of the
raised air vents.
Quinn raised an eyebrow but handed over a cigarette and her lighter and Daria
quickly lit it and tossed the lighter back.
“So how’s the band going?” Smirked at her baby sister who
still seemed to have no ability to lie.
“Pretty good, we’re not really a band, we just like to play
together.” Quinn answered and Daria couldn’t help but smile at the
blush as Quinn’s words played themselves through her mind.
“So Jennifer what exactly are your intentions toward my sister.”
Daria said turning to the blonde.
“Ummm.” Jennifer said.
“DARIA.” Quinn said with a raised voice.
“I’m just giving her and you a hard time. Anything you might want
to tell me.” Daria mused.
“Fine, if you have to be nosey then yes I’m seeing Jennifer. I
really don’t know what it means, I don’t care what anyone thinks
but it’s all Jane’s fault.” Quinn sighed.
“Jane.” Daria laughed.
“I hadn’t really thought about THAT until we uh well um.. hooked
up. After we decided that we were friends and she wanted to stay with Mark, I
started hanging out with Jennifer to help out as she got better and stuff
happened and well we decided to let things happen for a while and see how it goes.”
Quinn said blushing the whole time.
“OK but I’m not dating her, no offense Jennifer.” Daria said
forcefully.
“What?” Quinn and Jennifer said confused.
“First you get Trent then I do. Then I get Jane and then you do.
I’m not dating Jennifer after you’re done with her.” Daria
sighed.
“Ooook.” Jennifer said still looking confused. “Wait a
minute, when did you date Jane?”
“Thanks sis, we didn’t date. We just hooked up right after you and
Daria got hurt.” Quinn said looking at Daria with a not to friendly
glare.
“Cool, that was before me and you started talking right.” Jennifer
said dismissing the event.
“Yes, so we’re ok.” Quinn sighed.
“Yep.” Jennifer laughed lightly.
“Now you is there some reason you felt the need to harass me.”
Quinn said turning back to her sister.
“Old sister, little sister and I mostly wanted to let you two know that I
know so no need to try to keep it secret.” Daria answered.
“I’m not ready to let Cleo know yet, that’s who we’re
trying to avoid finding out. I don’t want to introduce someone too her as
my partner until I’m a little more sure it’s that serious.”
Quinn said glancing over to Jennifer who nodded in agreement with the
statement.
“I can understand that but I still plan on telling Mom and Dad the first
time I need a break from them the next time their here.” Daria replied.
“You wouldn’t.” Quinn gasped and then hung her head at the
devilish look in Daria’s face.
“You would.” Quinn surrendered.
“Of course I would for my baby sister.” Daria said as she stood up
on one crutch and hugged Quinn with her free hand.
“You two have a special kind of love.” Jennifer laughed.
Epilog
“What did you say?” Trent said in disbelief staring at the doctor,
as Daria was knocked speechless.
Jane was dancing behind them cheering the news.
Trent turned to Daria and squeezed her hand firmly.
“I’m sorry, baby.” Trent said to her sadly.
“There has to be some mistake.” Daria said looking pale and
frightened.
“I’m sorry Mr. And Mrs. Morgendorffer-Lane. The ultrasound clearly
showed us these results.” The Doctor said looking at them with a touch of
pity.
“Janey, sit down damnit.” Trent growled at his sister. “Maybe
you could do the ultra thingee again.” Trent pushed.
“Of course, if you want but I really doubt it will change the results
from the two times we did it already today.” The Doctor replied gently.
“Maybe I heard you wrong.” Daria tried as she held her arm over her
swollen stomach.
“The ultrasound clearly shows three babies. Barring any problems you will
be having triplets in just about two months.” He repeated the
information.
“I’m so sorry Daria.” Trent said hugging his wife.
“Not as sorry as when these monsters rip their way out of me and come
after you.” Daria growled.
“Your going to be a mommy.” Jane said in singsong fashion.
“Shut up.” Daria barked.
“It’s going to be ok, Quinn and Stacy will give us some pointers
and I’m sure everyone will help out.” Trent tried to reassure her.
“He said three, not one or two but three. What did you do to me?”
Daria sighed as she returned the hug.
“You’re sitting in the delivery room the entire time.” Daria
stated firmly.
“If you say so.” Trent agreed.
“How am I going to feed three babies I only have two.” Daria
exclaimed looking down at her chest.
“We’ll figure it out.” Jane said hugging Daria from behind.
“Consider you self on babysitting duty for the next 18 years.”
Daria announced.
“I can deal with that.” Jane shrugged.
“Oh my god who’s idea was this.” Daria moaned.
Sorry I had to do it. ![]()
